You can hear it in Lin's voice. That is very genuine sorrow, and makes this so much more powerful because it feels so real. Like a father who's actually lost his son and is seeking comfort from his wife, and is also seeking to comfort her
What puts it over the top is when Eliza finally speaks and takes his hand. And he physically crumbles, his voice breaking. The emotion he shows prior to that is raw and powerful, but it’s just gut wrenching in the moments that follow as the full reality hits him not only that she’s forgiving him, but that he DOES NOT DESERVE that forgiveness. And he comes apart. Great stuff.
It's pretty amazing just how layered this song is. 1. For all his bravery, intellect, ambition and drive, Hamilton realizes he's an idiot. He thought, somehow, Eliza would accept the Reynolds pamphlet because it salvaged his work. He was wrong. 2. It captures his enormous realization he's lost Eliza. He is alone. 3. It captures her unfathomable pain, betrayed by her husband and the loss of her son. 4. It captures her recognition that Hamilton - for all his bravery, intellect, ambition and drive - is lonely, insecure, scared, human. And her strength, her nearly inconceivable capacity to forgive. 5. Finally, it captures Hamilton's incalculable relief that in the midst of the horror & loss & pain, he did not lose her. All that in one song. No wonder everyone cries...
The live version is much more depressing than the recorded version. Because you can hear the genuine sadness in Lin’s voice and you see the emotional pain on Phillipa’s face.
I'm not a fan of Lin's singing, but this is the song where his voice fits the best. It doesn't need to sound good, it needs to sound like someone who's hurting, which he pulls off great.
"There are moments that the words don't reach There is suffering too terrible to name You hold your child as tight as you can And push away the unimaginable"
This song makes me cry everytime. I can’t watch Eliza cry. It shatters my heart. She didn’t deserve everything she went through. Eliza’s emotions were contagious. Also there’s a backstory to Eliza balling. I was told that Phillipa lost someone before the showing and this song was so hard for her and she started balling. But I also know that she an actress. But I’m hamilton strong. And I’m on team Eliza
Seriously, look at where they started. Alexander was 19, brash, and bold--and Eliza was was an innocent Disney princess. Now they are both wearing black, solemn faced, and mourning the loss of their son. And this wasn't even the first of their tragedies. The Hamiltons went through a LOT...
i watched this in person (hamilton finally came to singapore this year!) and was seated pretty far away to see the actors' faces. watched hamilfilm afterward and this part got me sobbing like a baby. seeing the emotional pain on their faces, lin breaking down close up really adds to the scene TT
I came here after watching his NoMAA speech where he talked about this song and how he has been “writing” this song ever since he was 4 yo when his bestfriend died and how that pain and fear of death has always been with him
And I heard someone say that Lin was having a hard time writing this song until someone in the studio lost their child and Lin observed their behavior and how they acted and the words just came to him.
How Lin sings about wishing he could trade his life for Phillip’s because that would make her smile to have their child there both shows Hamilton’s grief but how he hasn’t quite “learned” from what happened. Eliza doesn’t want another person dead-she’s going through the loss of a child. And it’s sad because he clearly never learns. Look at how he is getting ready to duel Burr. No warning to Eliza and pride yet again takes someone she cares about away.
Sadly, last week we had a massacre of 19 fourth graders in Uvalde, TX by an 18 YO boy. Watched Hamilton today with GD and this song killed me. Their parents are doing the unimaginable. Heartbreaking.
It's horrible to imagine how many children's lives have been cut short due to gun control laws in America. I remember how, last week, before the school shooting info had been in the news, the entire school was forced under a lockdown drill. I remember sighing and waiting for it to be over, unknown to me that the only reason we had the drill was because of the school shooting
I’m going to see display in September I think why no I’m going to see it but I just love it because I’ve been watching it on Disney+. You guys have a great job supporting Hamilton. Also, this is sad because you know Hamilton son died.😢
Eliza actually cries because someone in her family had died and I guess the grief had hit her during that song because yk the song signifies that they lost their son…it’s sad but it’s a good song..but it’s still sad😭
Two very different versions. Kelly's wouldn't belong in the musical..it just wouldn't make sense. This is the original stage production and they do the song justice.

*sobs uncontrollably*
Sobs for no reson
Just saw this show in Australia and the amount of sadness Miranda exhibits makes it so much better

"I know there's no replacing what we lost"
That's when it always hits me 💀

All that in one song.
No wonder everyone cries...

No wonder I always cry whenever I listen to it.
And it hits him in the moment she finally speaks that he doesn’t deserve her forgiveness, yet she chooses to give it anyway.
Damn man 😢

I saw Hamilton for the first time last week. The gentleman next to me cried when this was performed. It's beautiful.
@Pit Pat Or he lost a son :( I wish it was only the feeling...
Saw it in Hamburg last Saturday.
And I couldn’t keep it together as well.
Same with Eliza’s cry at the end of Stay Alive Reprise..
It’s amazing how Pips just stands throughout almost the entire song with a straight face…I couldn’t do that
I read that she had to take extra acting lessons because she always got emotional and didn't manage to keep a straight face

I read an angsty fanfic with this playing. I sobbed all night.
props to you dude, if i did that i would've gone blind from crying lol
@@qrosilaux6775 It was an angsty, sickfic and it sounded like the characters to make it even worse.
@@lulufangz I'm sorry you had to go through that lol

Lin isn’t technically strong as a singer, but man, his delivery packs a punch. He is a brilliant storyteller . ❤
what's wrong with his singing lol
Lin’s too genius for me. This man thought, “Hamilton’s gonna sing her, her song,” and killed it.
"There are moments that the words don't reach
There is suffering too terrible to name
You hold your child as tight as you can
And push away the unimaginable"
The line kinda hits me because no parent actually imagine losing their child until it happens to them.

I think Lin is so emotional with this song because his kid was born around this time.
So emotional, such a talented actor!
Seriously, look at where they started.

I cry, sob whenever I watch and listen to this track! So much feels!!! They got you so invested in the characters/people, you already feel their pain!
the "Forgiveness, can you imagine?" is when it truly hits
I saw hamilton in London it was incredible made me happy, cry and laugh so amazing
Heart touching song
didn’t pippa lose a family member before this show started? You can hear how concerned he really is for her
She did I don’t know if it was this performance but Lin stepped in during the Forgiveness part and whispered if she was okay
@@jackmcdonnell8505 poor Phillipa ❤❤❤
This song always makes me cry
I'm conflicted because the sobbing makes it sound less appealing, musically, but makes it seem more genuine/emotional.
This part had my eyes bawling out that my mother thought that I was being dramatic.
Nope, you weren't being dramatic at all. Just empathetic, which is good, because this happened to real people.

The implication that he thinks she'd be happier if he were dead instead of Philip is heartbreaking, regardless of whether or not it's true.
…Then adding in the fact that before very long, he WILL be dead, AS WELL as Phillip…
She is so good!
I cried so much during this song
you can see tears in Pippa's eyes

I wept with this
Fun fact:Pipa lost a family member before the show, In the end Pipa leaned on his shoulder, lin whispered if she was okay"
BRO THIS MAKES ME CRYY😭😭😭😭
Looks sad😢 plus I love those and fan however its so amzing that is great show and theather
this is an excellent parody of the play by Bad Lip Reading.
"Yeah that would be nuts"

I think she received the call just before the last song but I’m not sure

How does Miguel Cervantes do It’s quiet uptown every night? I mean, he lost his 3 year old daughter due to epilepsy
“there’ no replacing whaTTT we’ve losTtTt”

i think lin enunciated too much 👹
Dose anyone else cry at this moment
