@@theRiver_joan jk not directed at u. It's like "this man is really gifted", dude literally dressed up, and told you about the major scale, wasn't too gifted. I give condolences to whatever Dalibor is going through though.
Your different characters have legit become a part of my music creation during studio time, because they make some dry learning materials addictively memorable. Cheers!~
This channel is great at explaining music theory. You've clearly studied it. Too many channels just "wing it." It's so obvious they've never studied it properly and think their ears and vague analogies will be enough. Name an interval by number or say "major third" and they'll be lost.
I watched several videos on this topic, even Rick Beatos but...just wow, this is the first time i actually understood what modes are. Thank you for existing man. Keep going!
All you really need to know is you take the major scale and just change what note you start on. There's some chord theory that goes into it too if you wanna go to the next level, but modes like Phrygian tend to have a droned root while they just play around the already cool sounding scale.
I think the more difficult it is to reconcile the mode with traditional major/minor, the more songwriters will tend to drone and/or make the idea sound really modal. For example, it’s more likely that phrygian or locrian songs will use riffs that overtly and obviously center their tonic than say, Dorian or Mixolydian
So glad we've got legends left like Prance Connors, After the passing of Barry Harris its important the youth still have access to such masters of harmony
😂how tf does he do it so well every time? I love the picture in the background of him hugging his angry and regretful wife💀, always playing such an unaware and unhygienic character that sounds like he’s being told what to say with a gun to his head lmao. Keep it up geeza
man wtf this "trick" about moving one semitone up and only use the "white" keys really is a major game changer in my understanding of this jesus christ! My man! Love your stuff
One thing I would love from the Ableton Piano Roll is the ability to modulate scales halfway through a clip. So it would be cool if I could set a breakpoint or automation point saying I want it to be Mixolydian after two bars, and then for the Clip Scale to automatic change what notes are highlighted depending on where I'm clicking in the timeline.
You can bodge this in by adding a separate MIDI track (not connected to an instrument) with all the notes of the scale all playing at once. Draw in all the scale changes, give it a distinctive color, and rename it to SCALEREF or something. Then whenever you want to edit something, use MIDI multi-edit to edit both the track you want to change and SCALEREF at the same time. Send SCALEREF to the background _et voila,_ dynamic scale highlighting in whatever color you chose for SCALEREF. It's not automated, but it's easy enough to fix the reference track if you make changes to the structure of the song. This is a trick I stole a long time ago from one of my buddies who uses FL.
I love Prof. Underbelly. I keep watching his stuff and get too scared to submit my piece for roasting. But I keep watching. I also know that he actually has a virtuoso pianist up his sleeve. Please everybody support the Professor.
C Major - Happy, cheesy D Dorian - Melancholy, Hans Zimmer E Phrygian - Evil, Swag F Lydian - Whimsical G Mixolydian - Romantic A Aeolian - Sad B Locrian - sinister
As always great vid, However, it would be great if you could do a video showing these scales being applied in a chord progression and melody, as this is where many tutorials leave a lot of people confused.
@@yousuckatproducing And even further, how to determine how to change to a nearby scale in the progression and melody to change things up without sounding too far off.

After a long time, I've been making an effort to at least know SOMETHING about music theory and scales. I had been wondering when I'd be able to actually understand what was going on with Key Modes. Then, this video comes along, and after a bit of exploring after watching, it's really helped me understand. Thanks!
Such a weird guy…. 😂😂😂 These videos always keep me entertained. Can’t wait to see what other characters come out of that crazy brain of yours. Keep them coming!! 👍🏼
A common trick used by countless bands is to sing a tragedy over a major scale and happy lyrics over a minor scale. Music as well as any art is about contrast.
Much obliged, internet beat man. I have my Berklee audition coming up and I assume they’re gonna wanna know the mode of the song I make. Intriguing truly
In german those are just called the church scales. Because you're only using the white notes. What's missing is that you can move the scale to any key you want and still have the same effect. It would be sad if any song that was ever written was in A minor, because everyone is sad all the time.
