Fishing a Flooded Mineshaft for Big Gila Trout - Fly Fishing in New Mexico

- This video was not created to spot burn. Some of the waters I fish are small and very easily pressured. I make these videos to inspire other anglers and will not give out locations.
Missed a fish from a weird "mineshaft" hole while shooting my last video so I went back and caught it! Turns out it was 2 of the biggest Gilas I've ever caught. Great way to end off 2021!
Check out my Instagram for sneak peeks at future videos or for what doesn't make it to the channel!

Nice job. Glad to see the stocking program and re-establishment is working well. And really pleased you C&R.
Thank you!
Awesome fish. Need to get fish back in water much quicker than you did.
I do better in my latest video!
It is important to value the Heritage (Native) fish species of the USA, like the Gila, Apache, and Rio Grande Cutthroat trout of the SW USA, in the areas where they evolved for millions of years.
Love the content bro, especially seeing you fish places I’m near. Keep it up bro
Thanks man 2022 is gonna be good!
Really nice huge trout, and many catches
Nice catch!!! But don't you think you should not keep it out of the water so long. I'm trying to hot spot that location, that wall, those stairs.....love your videos!
Yeah in retrospect I did push the limits with these fish. Glad people are keeping me honest here, I'm always looking to improve my fish handling. Thanks for watching!
Ahahah holy shit man! That’s gotta be a record Gila trout! Dude mind blown! Awesome!
Awesome job man. Those fish are cool. Eventually I'd love to catch every trout/char. In north America. Some outside of that as well 😍 got a good start with browns, brookies, rainbows, and lake trout!
Hey we're tied😂 I got browns, brookies, bows, and gilas. Maybe a Cutthroat when I was young but can't say for sure. Good luck on getting all your species and thanks for watching!
Awesome catches!!! Congrats!
Yah man 👍🏻
Can't wait to get back down there.
Used to fish that stretch alot when I was a kid
Awesome piece of river for sure! Thanks for watching
Keep em coming man!
Wow! A couple of big ones.
Great video!!! 🤙🏼
I actually thought you did a great job on the fish handling. At least the first one, you took the fly out in the water, in the net, let it rest. A little quicker maybe but way better than the majority of fish photo banana heads. So good job! And as far as spot burning don’t even worry. New Mexico spots are not really a secret. Not like you gave anyone gps
Great video 😀👍
wild how he was following em around
Less time out of the water, keep fish in the water, rather then showing off. Imagine running a 100 yards as hard as you can then sticking your head under water, wouldn't work so well for you, it doesn't work well for the fish either.
I know it looks like I go from netting the fish straight to showing it off but there's a minute or two missing where I give every fish a break in the net. I wouldn't wanna hold my breathe right after running a 100 yards but after a minute or two I could. Thanks for watching and rest assured I treat my catches well
Yes master
You can usually tell between male and female from the position of the eye in relation to jaw size
1st off nice catch huge gila. 2nd off was that a hatchery planted fish?
Awesome Gilas dude ! River must be the right temp for them right now . That river is too hot in summer ?
This river does get pretty warm in the summer. They're native so they should be able to survive but I've never caught or seen any in this stretch during the warmer months. Thanks for watching!
😄 yay!
Is this in the same area as the jordan hot springs?
Great fish but try not to put them on the grass. It removes their slime coat and can kill them. If you want to measure I recommend a measure net or measure them while in the net.
Yeah I really need a net with a tape in it. I usually don't put fish on the grass like that but we had a good frost the night before and it was sopping wet. Fish on dry grass is super bad
Nice vid man! What river is this looks fun!
Thanks! Read the description on the video
Is the hook barbed?
Great vid bro new sub here what’s the regulations on those and when are they in season
Thanks for the sub👍 5 gila trout limit in this area, no barbless hook restrictions or anything. Technically you can target them year round but winter and spring are usually when I have the best luck.
@@fredificationable thanks bro I’d like to try I’m out in California so don’t know too much
Great fish and nice video enjoyed watching it. I understand to some extent about not sharing “secret spots” but I feel like as a fly fishing community we need to move past this secret cabal mindset. I understand we don’t want people to pressure “our” spots and all of that but nothing I feel is more frustrating for new comers to the sport to see these videos see the insta posts and just not have the same experience. I wish everybody had time to just go blue line and find amazing places on their own but truth is that’s simply not the case for most people. But either way nice fish and tight lines.
Thanks for watching and I do agree with you somewhat. If it were only catch and release fly fishers watching my videos I would be more inclined to share where I'm fishing. In reality I have no idea what the ethics of my viewers are and it feels irresponsible giving out that information. This section of river has a 5 Gila trout limit and it wouldn't be hard for a large group of people keeping their legal limits to wipe out all the trout for a few miles. Until NMGF makes more responsible regulations for this river I'm keeping my mouth shut so that the people that already enjoy fishing here can continue to do so.
Keep the fish in the water and less out of the water. Love the energy tho!
I will be in the future😉 thanks for watching!
Best way to tell difference in a male or female trout is a male trouts jaw always extends behind the eye😃
Hey that's a good tip! Gonna have to remember that. With all the triploid trout in the state I don't come across males very often
Put the thing in the water already, for gods sakes
Watching this back now I gotta agree with you. I had good releases on these fish, but that doesn't excuse having them out that long
Nice fish, but you keep them out of the water waaay too long!
In the moment it felt like I had them out for 10 seconds but in reality it was closer to 30 for all fish. Looking back I definitely pushed the limits. Adrenaline is a hell of a drug!
I'll give you $100 if you can catch a wild one below the bridge Rainbow, Gila, Gilabow or Brown will do. What ya think?
Honestly I had only fished this section for warm water species before last month. I'd be happy to catch a trout there but if I do I'm not taking your money. I think you have more of a problem with how NM Game and Fish manages their waters than with what I'm doing.
Hell, where do I sign up? Haha That's easy money, maybe not so much this time of year though. These big ones are stocked gilas anyhow.
@@fredificationable the game and fish is a joke here, for sure.
Alright Im having a hell of a time trying to geolocate this spot based off landmarks and information. I think its S_____ C____
I enjoy C&R for gila trout in your neighboring state of AZ.
Pseudo profanity.
Those are NOT wild born trout, they grew up in a fish hatchery in Mora NM, you can pretty much just walk up and pick them up out of the river.
I didn't say they were wild lol. Stockers or not I still had to work for them and had fun doing it. I don't get your point?
Not true at all man. Some fish have different instincts than others. I've been to quite a few hatcheries and all of the species of fish behave very differently.
The rainbow trout are pretty much like chickens. They start flapping allover if you just walk up to the tank, but every other species there would shy away and swim to the other side of the tank to get away from you.
My point is, the world is a big place with many possibilities. I'm sure the fish he catches in this video didn't grow to that size because it bites on every lure thrown at it. They grow big because they are smart and they have the apex genealogy of that water shed.
You just can't apply your experiences to the broad spectrum of possibilities life throws at every being inhabiting this earth. So just because you catch dinks or get skunked doesn't mean you are fishing for smarter fish, and just because this dude catches lunkers doesn't mean he's catching big dumb fish. Fish are pure protein. There are so many things trying to eat them . These fish are not dumb. The only thing dumb about it is people who think they are.
Who cares? They are native and belong in that river. You should be thankful they are trying to bring the population back.
@@chicanobluesaz4191 If You had the slightest idea how many Wonderfull trout streams the Game and Fish have destroyed over the years in the Gila you would have a different tone.
@@jimlahey7790 Ummmm, did you not catch the fact that those fish DID NOT GROW UP IN A RIVER?????
