The Assyrians the Persians the Greeks then Romans then Islamic conquest then crusades back to Muslims and the ottomans again back to European colonization of the recent centuries. In addition to the early cultural and genetic interrelations with Phoenicians and Egyptians, Greece was most recently under direct ottoman rule for 500 years during which the region and its people were forever changed culturally religiously and genetically. If you visit Greece and look at their physical characteristics, food, and culture, they are hard to differentiate from the Turks of turkey or the Arabs of the Levant. Islam was until 150 years ago very much a part of Greece's culture and life. Although Greeks would like to believe that they are culturally and genetically part of Europe in their nationalistic and religious fervor, the fact is that they are genetically and culturally are very much a part of the eastern Mediterranean history and pool, and until quite recently filled with Muslims and Mosques for 500 years under Ottoman rule. This is only a brief and you research all that on your own.
