Migrant labourers leave their kids behind and go work somewhere else. For example a man will go look for work in the big city. Then start a new life there and forget about the woman and child he left behind.
Read up on the history and effects of Pass Laws (Dom pass) in South Africa & labour recruitment schemes such as The Witwatersrand Native Labour Association (WNLA), more popularly Wenela. In the city the African men were largely confined to single sex hostels and their families were not allowed to join them so were confined in the so called homelands/Bantustans or other countries in the region. All these schemes broke up the traditional family unit & created fatherless or abandoned children both in the city & homelands, they created female headed households and high levels of alcohol abuse. It’s hardly unique to South Africa, you see the similar patterns in the Caribbean & USA. There is plenty of academic work on these issues. Read up for example article in Oxford University Press by Michael Savage “The Imposition of Pass Laws on the African Population in South Africa 1916-1984
