The cooling system works the same . It helps prevent the rear 2 cylinders getting more heat then the rest of the cylinders. Is it needed ? not really when you're not boosting the engine . But better to have it and not need it then , not have it and need it IMO.
I know this this old, but this may help someone watching this in the future. The Garagify guy is correct. 3/8 NPT is what he used. 3/8 NPT is around 17mm in diameter

It was all supposed to be iron because of the heat of the sump

Not worth the struggle. Om605 does not have this problem.
