What a fun movie. And yes, one that could never be made today.
Jack: "What, I'm supposed to buy this shit? 2,000 years and he can't find a broad to fit the bill? Come on, Dave, you must be doin' somethin' seriously wrong."
Lo Pan : There have been others, to be sure. There are always others, are there not? You seem to be one who knows the difficulties between men and women. How seldom it works out. and yet we keep trying like fools. Who is this? Friends of yours? You see this really pisses me off to no end.
This movie is gold; every line you can so quotable; every frame is filled no wasted time awesome characters, the effects for the most part hold up great. I means this movie is just fantastic.
Aren't they rebooting this, starring Dwayne Johnson?

@@nathanlane3055 urgh so annoying there are some films that should just be left the fuck alone. Princess Bride and Big Trouble in little China are films that are what they are because of when they were made. Just leave it alone and create something new.
Also Dwayne Johnson is an action star doofus with about half the charisma of Russel. There is no way you would be able to get away with the Rock not being the badass fighter like they did with Kurt and that is one of the best humorous parts about this film. Jack Burton being so out of his depth but trying desperately to keep up while failing a lot but completely undeterred by his mistakes. It is brilliant. Just. Grrh fuck Hollywood this is why I don’t watch TV or see new movies. I have stopped being a “fan” of franchises. If they remake BTILC it needs to be a box office bomb and immediately forgotten about sort of like Robo Cop

I rank this on the same level as 'The Goonies': Smart script, loads of one-liners, sense of adventure and excitement, and overcoming evil.
I rewatch it all the time. Usually when it's pouring rain , or when there are clear skies, or during the day. Or at night.
What about in a total eclipse?
@@Zerofightervi in a lunar eclipse is when I like to watch it. Or also during a solar eclipse. A partial eclipse is a good atmosphere for watching it. On the other hand, u can't beat a good re-watch of this film during a meteor shower. It's good to watch some John Carpenter during global warming. Almost as good as watching his work during global cooling. "Big Trouble in Little China" is - all joking aside, now - BEST enjoyed during climate change. Of course it was really nice to watch during the 80's, too... back when we just had WEATHER. 🤓👌!

My favorite is always the opening monologue. Him just talking to nobody:

After listening to you guys, I had to go and watch it again. This was probably my 400th time watching it and it does not get old.
When I saw Lightning firing up his hands I was sooo hooked...
I believe that was added because test audiences didn't know what the hell was going on when all of the magical stuff started happening.
It was a little teaser to show this isn't your typical action film.

I love how the opening has an infinitely better hook and far better foreshadowing than any movie Hollywood can CONCEIVE of now. The movie escalates CONSTANTLY and never goes backwards. I love how Kurt Russell is playing a parody of his action hero roles of the times, and I love how we, the audience, see this insane black magic shit through his eyes, the eyes of a normal man like us that is so far out of his element it's laughable. Like when he punches the Storm and then when it just does nothing he smiles and nods, or the "WHAT?! WHAT WILL NEVER COME OUT AGAIN?!"
It all subverts expectations into a perfect finale that was set up from the beginning "It's all in the reflexes". I have never seen a movie set up something so perfectly and have you go "HOLY SHIT" like that moment
This movie is top 3 best of all time. Seriously.
There are no more remarkable directors or writers, They are just a faceless committee or committee chosen nonentities with no creativity, purely shitting out agenda driven propaganda dogshit.
Big trouble in Little China is how you subvert expectations.
They set up Jack Burton as the main character, but everything that happens to him in the first 75 to 80% of the movie shows him to be the sidekick and not the actual hero, and then the shit hits the fan and he steps up and becomes the hero because he's the only one who's not paralyzed in fear by Lo Pan and his minions.
And even then, Wang is still a hero too because he's the one who fought to get everyone to that point and backed Jack Burton up when the roles switched.
It's a repeat bait and switch that blows movies like The Last Jedi and Lightyear out of the water.
One of the funniest lines you couldn't do today, at the beginning Jack asks Wang if he knows Kung Fu.
Wang responds "That's racist "
Today Jack would melt like a snowflake. But Jack just gives him te look.
And Wang, just laughs and says of course I do.
They would have left it out. More likely something demeaning and belittling would have been written in to be thrown at Jack because racism against Whties is perfectly acceptable for some reason.
Is that in the DC? I don't recall that scene happening. I recall Jack asking if one of the guys speaks English.
While watching Guardians of the Galaxy for the first time I remember thinking how much Peter Quill reminded me of Jack Burton. Great that they had them together in GOTG 2!
GOTG is one of my recent favourites simply because it reminds me so much of old school fun films.

I have had to literally force people to watch this movie. Never once However has anyone not thanked me for it.

Watched it per the Drinker's recommendation and I wasn't disappointed, need a another 2-3 watches to fully digest because holy smokes it is packed to the brim

And then we meet him. Ha.
but everything egg said was true. We are in his debt because he ultimately killed Lo Pan. And he showed great courage, repeatedly. Courage doesn't mean not being afraid; it means being afraid and struggling on anyway.
It's all in the reflexes.

They speak Cantonese in the film. It's mostly curse words which makes it even more hilarious.
Because many expats of that period and area were Cantonese refugees that fled from China due to the CCP.

The announcement of this chat is what inspired me to finally sit down and watch this masterpiece. Glad I did. Discovered a new favourite.
Went to watch this at the cinema alone (1st time). Tried to explain it to my Dad when I got home. He didn't have a scooby what I was babbling about. 10 Years later he watched it and loved it and we used to watch it together whenever it was on TV. He passed away last year. Always makes me think of him now when I watch it. Like Jack B the old man was a funking Lej!
I felt like The Thing was one of those movies that couldn't be made any better.

@@dustman96 agree. Big trouble and the thing I consider perfection. I read who goes there years ago and found it interesting but very dry reading. Carpenters adaption is a classic on its own terms. I wouldn’t change a frame of either of these. Can rewatch endlessly
The only thing that tops it is watching the version with Kurt and Johns commentary.
According to Carpenter the opening scene with Egg Chen was a last minute addition at the Studios request, as without it they felt the film would be too confusing for the audience. A rare instance of studio interference actually working out pretty well.

Saw Buckaroo Banzai for the first time last year, what a cast! I also watched Night Of The Comet, another 1980s classic!!
Saw it in the movies when it came out - I was 12. Saw it, again, last week. 46 years old and it's still awesome and puts most everything made in the last decade to shame. EDIT: The last time I got up to pee during a movie, I came back and Ben Kenobi was a pile of robes on the floor of the Deathstar. DON'T EVER GET UP AND PEE.

Well, I fell asleep during the beginning of Empire Strikes Back, and only woke up when the credits were rolling.
It was a good few years until I watched the movie on TV. Luckily I was not spoiled about that revelation.
I did that during Bladerunner 2049. I walked out to pee during the part of the movie where they discussed the.skeleton they found...that it was not only a Replicant woman, but that she'd given birth. That scene is the most critical.
I missed it. I came back and had a hard time understanding the rest of the movie. My wife let me go watch it again and I didn't go pee....I watched the scene and it then made total sense.
The last time I was interupted during a movie I missed Han Solo's death in Force Awakens because my kid had to pee...

Starman has that blend of irreverent humor with a plot you care about. John Carpenter was a master chef of a director.

Bridges played that right down the line. The movie was funny but his deadpanning was amazing.

One of the coolest things about this movie is Jack is such an unlikely hero done perfectly. In the beginning he really wants to help Wang find Miao Yen and likes Gracie, but at the same time he’s too proud to admit both. Yet he always puts himself deeper into danger. In the end he gets the ultimate win and is still cool enough to disappear just as mysteriously as he appeared. Does the monster kill him in the end, of course not! We just learned you can’t underestimate Jack Burton. Carpenter was a genius in building this character.
one of my fave scenes is the "gun trading" scene right after Jack jumps off the wheelchair at the well... the way wang, him and eddie swap guns while discussing their plans is classic.Its such a little throw-away scene yet I crack up everytime I see it.
The important part of the alley fight is that one of the Wing Kong is the awesomeness that is Al Leong.
There were rumors a while back that The Rock was going to do a BTiLC remake. I sincerely hope it never happens because the original is perfect. There's no way they'd hold to the foundational theme of the movie that despite Jack being the main character, he's not the hero of the story.
Yeah it would end up like the Jumaji remake
There's no way The Pebble could replace Kurt Russell.
I used to get angry at remakes. Ive long given up. All a remake does, is bring new attention to the old film and then get forgotten.
MILES more preferable to them forcing a late sequel out of it, dragging characters we love back and just bastardising them.
If Terminator had just been rebooted after 3 id have been much happier than the jaded bitter grump i am today 🤣
This movie is an extremely underrated, hidden gem of a film. Nobody I ever bring this movie up to has ever even heard of it, but after I show them it they love it and can’t imagine why it didn’t blow up and do much better back when it came out. As these guys have said in here, this films, writing, acting, set production, cinematography, costumes and makeup, the effects, it’s all incredible and works very well with one another. This movies script objectively just runs way more coherently and smoothly than most films nowadays and this was seen as some random side film during its release. Nobody even really payed it as much mind back then, like I said, a very underrated gem.
I absolutely love this movie; always has been and always will be a top 5 film for me; right next to The Thing. I am so Glad drinker is doing more than just a extra shots of it and giving it the full attention it deserves. :)
John Carpenter had a curse of being way ahead of his time with every movie he made . Still to this day The Thing is my favorite movie of all time . He kicked ass and chewed bubble gum . BTW In The Mouth Of Madness is so criminally underrated.
The ending on Prince of Darkness was outstanding.
This is as close to being a perfect movie as possible. There is no fat at all on this movie. The editing is perfect, perfect pacing, perfect casting, perfect acting. I watch this at least once a year for religious purposes
I always thought it was paced too fast. I really want the film to slow down a little and enjoy the characters. Saw an extended version that added a few good scenes that I liked. Helped fill in a few gaps....especially around the brothel scenes.

In reference to the Rocketeer, it was one of my favorites growing up. That along with the Shadow and the Phantom are the trilogy of pulp superheroes in the 90s. The writing quality between them varies, but the style is just beautiful. This is a cinematic universe I would love to see
At the end of the Movie, I think that the Beast took Jack Burton to his Space Ship and told him, “You Pilot, and I Navigate for you...” And they both have had a lot of Adventures Smuggling Spices for Mobsters, Rescuing Princesses, and other Stuff in Space ever since... 😂

Probably my favourite film of all time... I grew up on Big Trouble and have watched and rewatched it soooo many times. It has everything I could ask for in a film... and yes the quotes are indeeeed phenomenal 😄 I'm glad they haven't remade this fim, but for an awesome homage, check out Wekejay's Lo Pan style video which you can find here on RUclips... it's genius! And even has a James Hong cameo ✌😊

I saw 'Big Trouble In Little China' and 'Aliens' in a double feature when I was 16. They are still two of my favourites. My brother got a promo tank top the same as Jack Burton wore.
Name me one other director that has so many iconic movies, EVER, as in cult classics. John Carpenter is a legend among legends. His lines are incomparable, for example, I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass, and I'm all out of bubble gum, c'mon people, testify.

One of my favourites. Old boy Jack, 3 storms, Wang and Lo Pen vs. Egg shen. Dozens of quotes I still remember with big smile. Music and all concept overall, just great.
Love this movie. It was much quoted at our D&D table in the late 80s. I watch it a while back with my teenage boys. Gradually educating the on the awesomeness of the 80s 😉
Fun fact:
This was supposed to be the sequel to buckaroo banzai, then they changed it to what we know and love. Love that movie too!

Jaws, Raiders, The Princess Bride, and Big Trouble NEVER get old to me...I don’t know how that’s possible, unless its the great chemistry between actors, plot dynamics, and dialogue that they had. I will always watch those when on TV, and if it is NOT on, I break out the DVDS.
Hell yeah to Krull. Alun Armstrong, Liam Neeson, and Robbie Coltrane as lovable rogues. Bernard Bresslaw giving us a little bit of Carry on cyclops, till he sacrifices himself to Hodor, because this was how he foresaw his own death. Brilliant film.

What a great classic film. Just an entertainment blast.
One of my all-time favourites. It's goofy, it's endearing and magical. Jack should be irritating. He's full of himself, he exaggerates his own ability and he's clearly seen far too many John Wayne movies. But somehow it works. Wang is legit and in fairness to Jack, by the end he comes good.
It's just a cracking movie all the way through. I've been quoting it for years.

Absolutely the very best, under-rated film of all time. Nobody heard about it when it came out. It was released the weekend before Aliens 2.

Only saw this recently after getting introduced to the Drinker. One of my all time favorite movies. Saw in the theatre when it came out, recorded on vhs when it first came on tv, bought the dvd when I saw it. Well worth listening to the commentary with Kurt Russel and John commentary after you have seen the movie before. They enjoyed commenting on it immensely from what I can tell and added to my appreciation.

I saw this as a new movie as soon as it HBO or whatever after the theater. I was about ten or so. Been hooked since the beginning and it, of course, holds a spot in my home library. Nothin’ or double.
I watched this movie when I was 7. It is the one of a very few that I have ever watched the director's commentary. I love this film!

Watched this with my 11 year old son for the first time the other day. He loved it! I wish they made movies like this still.
There is something so warm and fuzzy about reading so many people feel the same way about these great movies I was so privileged to have watched growing up. Movies like "Big Trouble, Goonies, Tremors, Gremlins, Lost Boys, Highlander, The Princess Bride, Ghostbusters to name a few, we all cherished watching them back in the day and are still as good to watch now as they were back then.
Hey drinker, thank you for this movie. I always found myself wondering what movies would be like if we weren’t in this shell of protection that weeds out any joke that is the slightest bit culturally or racially insensitive. This movie was a gem, and I needed it during a very depressing time in my life. I stopped everything and watched the movie five minutes into this podcast and It was a the greatest choice all of quarantine.
Watched Rocketeer again and then washed it from my memory by re-watching this great movie again. The Six Demon Bag is my favorite prop.
The Guardians of the Galaxy movies really pulled of that 80s fun-but-serious vibe imo.
