  • One of my RUclips viewers asked if I ever fish with typical small tailwater patterns on this particular stretch of tailwater and...I don't. In this video Drew and I take on a challenge to compare the results of fishing beaded flies (Euro Nymphing) to beadless flies (In line Nymph Rigs). Come along for the ride.

If I’m running an indicator, I use wool, as it’s more sensitive, and I put my weight on the point 4-6” below my bottom fly. This creates more like a euro rig setup with more contact with my flies. You may try this method and see what you think.

Hi Jeff, yes the drop shot method would maintain more contact. I ran with a rig most people are familiar with in answering the question presented to me. Thank you for the comment and thank you for watching. Cheers!

Thank you for a terrific video. I especially appreciate your going through the two rigs section by section, and then explaining what is happening while you're fishing. Keep up the great work.

Norm, great topic and results of comparison were not surprising. Thank you for introducing viewers to new fishers and sharing the spotlight with new talent. I like this new series format.

    Hey Norm,
I would love to see a comparison of three systems:
    1) drop shot ala Kelly Galloup style using standard rod
    2) tight line setup using standard rod
    3) euro rod & euro setup
    Please use the same flies.
P.S. Could you please do it on the same section of river and please do it yourself.
    Sincerely and thanks,
    J.R. Torrez

Thanks for the comparison! I have always used euro nymphing with neon wax indicator and tungsten bead flies there with really good success. However, at San Juan I can’t get that to work. At the San Juan I run tandem small unweighted flies (#22 - #26) and split shot above that, but I tight line with neon wax on long tippet for indication. Basically I suck at reading a float indicator. So at the San Juan I partly use euro (tight line) techniques coupled with the standard rig used at the San Juan. It works good for me. Thanks again! Enjoyed the video.

That was a fun challenge even though I got my ass kicked haha! Yeah, I know a lot of people that run straight euro rigs with larger flies and do well. i mix it up depending on water type. I appreciate the comments and thank you for watching.

Hi Norm. Thanks for doing this comparison shopping video. I’d love to see the same comparison done on the San Juan. I’m a newer tight line fisher after fishing with the typical indicator rig set up. I fished the bait waters a couple of days ago and caught a bunch of nice rainbows and one brown on my euro set up. Then I went to the QW the next day and had no luck with my euro rig and caught some with the indicator/unweighted fly split shot set up. Maybe the water was too deep/slow for my euro set up as I was below the TH. It was interesting how Drew added an indicator to his tungsten flies in that situation. Thanks for any info or help you can give on these situations.

Maybe drop shot rig would give better contact.Weight on point with 2 tiny weightless flies above on short dropper tags.

Bobsbrewery, drop shot rigs would definitely keep better contact, but I kept with what is familiar with most anglers and beginners (and to keep the video under 20 minutes😵‍💫). Thanks for watching and thank you for the suggestion...could be another rig challenge🤔

Really good comment. This how I fish when on multiple flies. But I don't waist the opportunity for a weighted fly on the point. Love the name. Bobsbrewery.

@@shaunfishes101 Yes i do this another.I like slightly weighted flies mostly even on a drop shot/euronymphing type rig.Think slightly weighted tangles less. The Bobsbrewery is from my homebrew beer making days.

Would be interesting to give it another try with the same challenge. You're probably a little rusty with the indicator rig as it's not your normal setup. Just a suggestion.

Perhaps, fished the Juan a couple weeks before with similar rig. Different fish though haha.

I'll be willing to do the same challenge with you. I'll be willing to use the indicator rig since I probably use it a little more than you. I do Euronymph a bit but it's not always my preferred method since I'm mainly a streamer fisherman. It would be fun either way!

I and all fishermen I remember talking with here on the 10 + miles of water below Pueblo dam, Colorado, have much better results on size 18 and smaller flies than larger, year around. By custom most use floaters with weight and unweighted flies below. Some use larger weighted flies for some or all of their weight. Some euronymph, and they virtually always with one or all flies size 18 or smaller, usually unweighted. I haven't talked with anyone who thinks a rig with just flies bigger than 18 is more effective. During the seasons when trico or baetis or midge hatches predominate, size 20 and smaller flies are favored by far.
How about putting larger (weighted OK) flies and size 18 and smaller unweighted flies on the same rig and seeing which catches the most fish? Especially in winter🤔

Hello John, I know a lot of people fish the type of rig you described. I run that rig with many of my clients, but on other rivers. I stuck with the specific question that was presented to me in regards to this particular tailwater, which got me fishing outside of what I typically set up for myself on this section of river. There are many ways to set up nymph rigs to achieve depth, visibility and presentation. No doubt all variations of rigs and set ups will move fish. I kept the rig straight forward and plenty of times wanted to switch to larger beaded flies as an attractor, but kept with the parameters I set for the video. I have fished the Pueblo stretch of the Ark a lot and would like to get back up that way again, it's been a few years since I fished there. All in all, if I don't have to fish something smaller than a 20, I don't mind giving up a few extra fish to be able fish a bigger fly & thicker tippet haha. Thank you for the comment and suggestion....Thanks for watching!

Hi, John. Great comment! I've often wondered about this myself. My buddy and I euronymph the Colorado tail waters all the time (Ark/Pueblo, Blue, Williams Fork, S Platte, etc.). We primarily use size 14 and 16 patterns and occasionally drop down to size 18. We rarely have a problem finding fish willing to eat. That being said, it's totally possible that you would out fish us using unweighted flies under an indicator. I guess it's just a matter of what you have confidence in and what style you enjoy fishing. One major advantage the the euro rig in winter is the lack of ice build up on the line and rod because only the fine tippet is in the water.
      -Cheers!

@@NMaktimaFlyFishing Nice reply, Norm. I enjoy your trying different stuff for us, and fishing with your variety of friends. I can believe your stretch(es) of tailwater might favor use of flies larger than 18 rather than smaller. I notice Lance Egan and Devin Olsen fishing various stretches of their tailwater usually or never use flies smaller than 18, even in winter. I don't like dropping fish and I do notice I drop more on 20s than 16s, so if you can hook enough on larger flies there it kinda makes me wish I lived over your way. I liked what Kyle Bracken said below, that using size 14 and 16 patterns on various tailwaters, he and his buddy "rarely have a problem finding fish willing to eat". On my tailwater I used to use no small flies, and usually found fish willing to eat, but finally I found if 14s and 16s were on the same leader with 20s, I usually got most fish on 20s. Norm, if you want to hook up with me here some day, call 719 371 6546 😀

As Huge would say, "I suck at fly fishing" , and I get more fishing time because of less tangles with weight flies. So I like weighted flies

Really good that Norm, love trying things out. Really good comments you have. I personally did not like the look of your rig. Thinking of where the weight is and that you are presenting in a river just does not work for me. Bobsbrewery made a good comment. Love the name. Know that would work for me. No different to having a beaded point fly then two unweighted flies. Presentation in the water is far better. Mind I did think the challenge was unweighted. Which for a lot of the time would be pointless. Until the day. Cracking stuff Norm. Take care mate. Shaun. UK.
