I was bullied horribly at my first job and, yes, I went home and tied a nose around a vent on the ceiling. I came to my senses and eventually got the gel out of there. In my exit interview the manager basically said I sucked and should find a new field.
But I persevered and got hired at a more prestigious hospital who appreciates me and I'm doing great as a nurse now!
Bullying is real, don't tolerate it

Me too!!! It was my first hospital nursing job, and she would do it on night shift, in a room of an Alzheimer's patient, at the far end of the hall, that was surrounded by empty rooms. (Where no one could hear her scream at me.) I've never told anyone that, because I was so ashamed. Thank you for your post!

This is very common with CNAs. Unfortunately, due to them viewing RNs as “you think you better than me.”

I've been bullied by my nursing instructors to the point I tough about quitting nursing school. It traumatized me. Sometimes I freak out providing patient care. Pure insecurity on my skills, thanks to my instructors. I got out o nursing SCHOLL and at the moment I'm working as a nurse tech to get comfortable with myself. I will return to the nursing school in the fall. I will prove to the instructor that told me nursing was not for me the opposite.

I have heard bad nursing instructors talking about how nursing school is tough for some students and that "maybe nursing isn't for you". Then after that when knuckleheads in class would repeat it. Every time I started hearing some casually repeating that mantra I decided I'd start a counter mantra, "maybe teaching isn't for some instructors". People weren't as quick to say that near me for a while. I often felt that worn out phrase was just a way to bully people who were struggling with the academic hazing that many nursing schools perform. I graduated but it wasn't without help. Also, later on I heard about how many of those "good nursing students" had inherited tests and hints about tests while folk like me at the time were all on their own with no help from anyone. I'm an RN now and I still think nursing school was a terrible excuse for a college program.

Health care has highly educated individuals, with the most ego, pride, and most unforgiven, critical, toxic people. Education builds position not character or manners. I am surprised how many people agree with this video, yet there continues to be no change in the field. Which is why I left the hospital (pool of sharks) to open up my own practice (pool of dolphins). My friends who continue to work in the hospital continue to complain how toxic it still is in the hospital. Professionals being unprofessional with each other. Toxic environment shouldn't be excused, should know better as "educated people". Hope this video reaches more people.

I'm RN, and I've been bullied super badly for like 7 months when I was a new graduate at E.R.
and staying being positive saved my life. Yes, every moment was PAIN in the ass though lol
but I realized that talking, laughing at patients' side makes all these terrible feelings go away. So I kept working on it :) It was so much fun. and time passes no matter what, they started to like me.
Now I'm at my second hospital, and I was so afraid of the same experience would be happening again, so I tried so hard to be perfect as a nurse. well well well who would hate someone who's doing their very best?? It worked ! After all of this, I created my own way to avoid any horrible feelings at work. whenever some negativity comes up in your head, just say STOP, It's not healthy. Take a big breath, and do my job. quickly with no mistake. and day by day you will get better as your nursing level gets better. :)

I am a new nurse who encounters this at work. There is a nurse who also is charge and swears at people, yells out and everyone seems scared of her so won't stick up to her. I want to be assertive and not aggressive if she comes at me because I don't want to lose my job because of her. The managers don't seem to step in with her being charge nurse and there is bias for sure. I've had her talk rude to me, roll her eyes when I give report, question me on details that are in the H&P and when I don't know it, asks why don't I know it. I hope to one day stand up to her when she comes at me but in a professional manner. Bully's suck.

I was bullied very badly at one of my jobs, very first position as a somewhat head of a department. I was in over my head, and it was too much for me, which led to the backlash of office staff talking about me WHILE I was sitting on the other side of the office within earshot, I cried going home daily. And recently, a SUPERVISOR who took it upon himself to basically call me (as an Asian/biracial) a communist on my FIRST day working in FRONT of a patient I was giving an IV. I didn't stay at either of those jobs, and I didn't really speak up until it was too late. My advice for young nurses, find someone to talk too, and don't let the backlash continue because you are afraid to say something. No one has the right to talk to you like that. It's not high school drama, it's real life, you are there to do a job and save lives, not be petty. Stay strong and realize that it will get better, and worse, and better, but you will make it.

Best way to handle a Burse (bully nurse ;D like it don't you) is to call them out on professionalism. "Can you talk to me more professionally," is the best "killing them with kindness" but still standing up for yourself I know of. They can tell the charge nurse. I think I have never been bullied, as a student or even as a nurse, and I regard that to two things:
    1. Always stand up for myself and never take a bullying from nobody, but for this one to work you gotta be sure of number...
    2. Always do your job and what is assigned to you perfectly, so this leaves no room for a bullying unless it's something personal and that's not cool at all and requires further management.
    Peace :)

I went to an adult information session last night and man, I don't necessarily want to say it was bullying but when I mentioned my STONG interest in nursing, she nearly completely shut me out. My advice is, just get a new job. I worked on a pediatric neuro floor in St Louis !!!!!! and there were 10+ bullies up there even the manager was a top tier bully. So I got a new gig making more money with better behaved more mature and higher skilled nurses.
I tried all the classic approaches even went to HR (No Breakthroughs). Some cultures on floors have a deep rooted illness and the bullies are so nasty, the hospital rewards them or turns a blind eye. It's bigger than me and there's a wide open market and I'm a free agent.

I'm currently a level 1 at SF State. I've been very fortunate with my cohort and instructors. I have not been bullied yet, but I am sure as we move up to higher skill levels it will happen.
Certainly, one way to handle bullying is to be confident and assertive without blowing a fuse or giving in.
And, I agree with the Nurse Duke, definitely stand up for others, and be there for your fellow classmates. If people don't stand up for themselves or others in an appropriate manner than bullying will continue. Bullying are like infections, you've got to control and contain them at their source. Yeah, cheesy lol.

  • @elverdad6805

I left because of the sadistic bullying. A study out of Toronto documented 66%, 2 out of 3 Nurses leave Nursing before the end of their second year on the job due to the "lateral violence" (bullying). I lasted five. I'm trying to take a measure of satisfaction from that.
After jumping through all of the hoops that my supervisor required to deal with the bullies, she finally admitted that there was nothing she could do. But the process had placed a target on my head, and the gang of bullies was now tag-teaming me. A co-worker that was very well informed about the unions explained that, short of actually being caught attempting to kill a patient, the union workers could not be fired. At worst, they might be forced to take a vacation. The bullies with decades of seniority know this.
Nursing was the biggest mistake I ever made.

Jesus Diedforyou , sad to read that. I was bullied my last 4 years, I was in my 60s. Shunned, and the manager was the biggest bully. I almost had a nervous breakdown. I had no support and couldn't eat before going to work. I would throw up at least twice a week before work from nerves. At age 64, one day I couldn't take it anymore, went to my manager and retired. She was overjoyed. I feel like such a failure, I worked at that same PACU job for 42 years. It was the younger nurses that bullied me.

I'm a cna and just started my new job at a veterns home where I live 6 weeks ago and I've been bullied since day one by basically everyone. because of the bullying and they don't like me, they talk crap about me to the ADON that's not true and now Ive been written up twice and my standard probation of 6 months has been moved to a year now and if I get written up 2 more times its termination. I've told my ADON no one likes me so far and talks about me behind my back, this is the other cnas, lpns and even the charge nurses. all she told me was to improve on what they are saying I'm lacking on. its unfair because I'm not doing anything wrong and going by protocol and procedures.I've never been written up before at where I worked as a cna before until I came here. I'm losing my mind working here and what sucks is there isnt really any other places in town with night shifts open and that's all I can work since my daycare shut down. so now I have to stick it out with basically a facility where no one likes me for being new and not being born and raised in nebraska since Im originally from florida

I *ate to break it to you guys, but bullying or building a thick skin to not feel it...is why nurses can eat their young. Someone who bullies is not well. I know, my first name gets associated with the word 'dirty' in my native language.
I was forced by circumstances to build a tool to make sure, one does never neglect their well-being (nurse or not, nobody who is well, bullies another). The world has no room for nay saying and rigid thinking.
Hang on. Just count the number of choices you guys make as a team and divide that with the total number of choices you as a team were supposed to make and the result : 'is your well-being score, as a Team'.
The bullies do not want to track their own behaviour, so yeah good luck selling them this idea, that bullying is a definite sign of mental problems (depression/ burn out).
Thanks for being nurses, i' LL marry any female nurse that gets me any day, every day just say the word...for I won't live long anyway, cause I got overlooked by society for my invisible disabilities as a kid/toddler learning to speak language...bla bla poor me f health (cause that is not what creates well-being by itself)...bla bla bla my chest hurts 🤟
Great job speaking out, you guys are looking 👌🏼

I was disappointed in this video in the first 90 seconds. There is so much more to this...... But I made myself finish the video. I believe it is a start; there's shame in allowing this to happen to one self. Coming from a military background it's ingrained in some of us to handle it in a different way. PTSD is real. Fact, when you're asked what's your job, unemployed RN? There's pain in that statement.

I think I've been bullied more by patients than I have other nurses lol. I have encountered some nurses who were just flat out rude and not helpful whatsoever. I'm almost half way through my BSN program and so far I've had amazing nurses who've been really helpful and have passes so much knowledge onto me. I have dealt with the not so nice ones either. I can handle constructive criticism and I'm always up for a challenge, but when it gets to the point of bullying and doing it in front of patients then I have a problem with it.

Til now they bully me, but like what that female nurse in the video said, "be assertive" and thats just how i cope, tho sometimes i soak in tears at home.

Learn to voice out and keep in mind... the nursing ethics, code of conduct and all. yes, be proactive. be assertive than reactive. but violence and bullying is yet another taboo issues in nursing. it is and it dors always happen. but nobody seriously get into trouble simply because some leaders find bullied nurses are so weak and uncapable to handle their own issues. sad truth.
