Chicken Math - Parody of Maniac from Flashdance

- It always starts out innocently - "I'll just keep a few backyard hens." Then it descends into mayhem as the number keeps growing. Ask anyone keeping chickens - Chicken Math is a thing! An unexplainable, exponential increase in number of chickens kept, when one or two was the original plan, often expanding to include other farm animals and homesteading activities. As a chicken keeper myself, since I've written songs about cats and dogs, my other pets, it seemed only fair to write about this phenomenon as well.
Most of the chickens in this video are our little flock of oldies and rescues - three roosters and six hens. RIP to Captain Janeway, one of our hens in the video, who died a few days ago.

Cats and chickens have a respect for each other that they don't ever extend to us pathetic humans. Chickens are descendants of T-Rex and cats are descendents of a Goddess, we were just made from the mud they walked on. 😉😁😊
*Shirley, It was the black n white kitten who came around the corner.... stared long & hard at this huge creature and trying to figure out what to do next and thought what in the blazing heck is that huge thing on two legs... I ain't gonna be able to catch that bird and bring it inside inside to show mum... and then slowly turned and scurried away to find some refuge lol 🙂 It was almost a Jurassic Park moment meeting a big Dinosaur to the little kitten 🙂🤣🤣🤣nz*

The nearest I can manage is bantams, but that was a very long time ago, when I very young, and a change of family circumstances meant that we moved but never took them with us.
@@richardvoogd705 Never raised them. My mom and dad always had chickens. When my dad passed we had to stop them. Mom wasn't in good health. I worked and took care of her, that was enough. 😀😀
Shirl, yes, I have a friend who is scared of chickens too. Mind you, everything that brings joy to one person has someone else not liking it.

One or two is a slippery slope to go onto, we did that in my dark and distant youth with rabbits. We eventually had an apartment complex of hutches and had to buy the food by the sackful.

I had chickens about twenty years ago. I designed and built a pretty cool chicken coup complete with a side door to easily harvest the eggs. My wife painted it red and drew rosemaling patterns on it (very Norwegian of her). Chickens are truly comical animals.
The coop sounds great! We're in the process of building a third one - because of chicken math, naturally! 😆

LoL yeah, my mom has the same problem. First it was chickens, now it's cats. No matter how many she sends to the vet to get fixed, there's always a new litter lurking somewhere in the barn.

Oh, how familiar! I went from half a dozen to about 60, in about a week! Biggest prob? Not accidentally stepping on them! No chooks currently, but waiting for a particular breed. Should be ready in a fortnight. Gotta love chooks.

You're so lucky to have chickens, and hens, and a rooster...to provide you fresh eggs, and the exact timing to wake up...( my grandparents had, in their countryhouse, a rooster that signaled each morning, at 4 o'clock sharp, that the sun is about to rise...no matter the season). And, of course, they provide a good inspiration for your funny videos...
Well, we don't get too many eggs from our geriatric bunch of birds, but that's okay - we still enjoy them and do what we can to give them a good retirement. Their area is away from our house, so I don't hear the crowing either, unless I'm outside.
Looks like a real hen party, descendants of T-Rex! That rooster looks stately with his big tail. Eggs for breakfast!
The sign on their coop reads, "Beware of the Tiny Raptors". That rooster is Chandler. He's second in command of our three roosters. Ross takes first place and Emily does what they tell him to. (We thought he was a she when we named him!)

We do. Hawks, stoats, rats. We get some subtraction, but for smaller chickens. That's why we try to stick with larger breeds.

aw I love my mixed flock! I have 3 roos and I do keep getting more hens since people in my area kill their chickens when they are 1 or 2 years old (so sad) I am working on getting my girls to set and hatch their own chicks so I can keep people buying local instead of having them shipped (where many die). And since it gets so snowy and icy here I have to have heated perches, heat lamps and warming beds so in winter more electric bill!
Aww. You sound like a wonderful chicken mom. We also have 3 roosters - all rescues. I can't handle people abandoning their pets when they start crowing or stop laying eggs.

Hens are safer than geese, those are thugs. I am getting memories of "the chicken ranch", kudos those who get the reference. Still has me giggling. I wonder what your song would be if it was rabbits not chickens.😉
Fewer people keep rabbits here... they're a real pest. And their eggs don't taste as good either.
😱😱 Oh lordy I forgot about the rabbit curse down under, let alone the toad one. Nor do they taste as chocolatey as they look, apparently.
Though I am still betting rabbit math would make chicken look tame, and goose math would make you wish those thugs never existed 😉😊 On the upside they make the best guard "dogs" to the point I have seen an ally and a rotty do a runner when faced with a goose. Indeed! I just bought 5 chicks and have a broody on 6 eggs!
I understand that chicken math stuff. A bunch of years ago me and my young son got three chicks for the fun of it. Then we started going to the small livestock auctions in middle & south, Georgia. It wasn't long until we had 35 of them. We had Game and Easter Eggers and I forget what else kinds we hand..But the one who had the absolute most fun with of them was Princes, the neighbors dog who killed 35 of them one night.
Oh, that must have been devastating. I'd have been so upset. My dog, Luna, is visible in some of the clips. She just loves the chickens and some of them love her too. But I was very careful introducing her to them. My cat's not interested at all. We have some predators here - hawks, stoats and rats, but most of our chickens are bigger breeds and are left alone. I think it would be too much of a risk to have little chicks free range though.

At the end of your fabulous video I have a powerful craving for EGGS breakfast - yum!! Shirley, how many eggs do you get daily (presumably lots!) and what do you do with them all? I've always thought if I kept chooks they'd all have names and I'd become too emotionally attached to them ....🇭🇲
MMmm, eggs!!! Would you believe, I get no eggs at the moment. They're all moulting, and two were broody before, so we haven't had eggs from any of them for over a month. Our hens are older, so lay more sporadically, and as winter approaches, their egg factories close down too. I'm actually about to head off to the supermarket to buy some eggs for this week. Sigh!

There is no such thing as a "cute" looking chicken, they are all sassy looking and should be proud of that look. I mean they could stare down many people I know just due to their sass, to the point they make even Geese look tame.

Nothing to be sorry about, though more and more people in city centres keep chickens as well. Not roosters though.
