Fun fact: first time I met Deena in person, we were taking a selfie and I said, “I just finished listening to your book. I loved it, and because you narrated it, it feels like I already know you.” She responded something along the lines of: that’s weird but I suppose that’s what happens Our paths have crossed many times since then, and I’d to think that we are friends IRL, despite the awkward start.
Good luck to you! I work in health care and highly recommend wearing a N95 mask if you’re traveling by plane (and maybe even at the expo). We are seeing lots of cold/cough viruses right now, not just Covid. Luckily, Taking zinc, ginger, etc are great placebos, but a virus basically has to run its course. Luckily, I live local and can attend the expo early Thursday. 😊
My weather app is saying Chicago temps will be in the 50s and 60s, cloudy and a bit windy. I usually don’t trust the forecast until 3 days beforehand. Good luck!!
I race half marathons the last 2 I traveled. I stayed in my motel room most of the time carbo loading. It was no fun. Now I take a jel before the race 1@3 miles 6 miles and then every 2 miles.
5 x 14mins (2min 10k, 10min HM, 2min 10k, 3min recovery) for a total of 70mins hard effort, with 25min warm-up and 10min cooldown. I think it's 1hr 55mins total. Those 10k surges put you just over threshold, then you spend the 10min HM just dropping below threshold. This style workout makes marathon pace/power seem effortless. My Chicago bib number is 2508, which I have no idea why....I suspect it's due to how early I applied, and not time based...cause I think I submitted to Chicago with 3:26hr and was initially placed in corral E, since moved up to corral D. I still run in a vest, slowly weening myself off it, but having 100% completely dialed in hydration/nutrition more than makes up for the extra weight. My coach has been really trying to get me to try beet juice to get higher nitrates, since the beets I take daily via a smoothie are not enough to provide the benefits you are referencing. Everyone is an individual, and training, nutrition etc is very individualistic. The trick is to find what works best for you, and tweak it. You be you! Enjoy Chicago!
I really like how you addressed carb loading in the video. I think there is some science to it for men, who seem to be more naturally adapted to burning those carbs. Even as a guy though, some of it kinda feels like a fad to me and I don’t know that I totally buy into the hype😅
Thank you! I know some people swear by it so it could be a touchy topic, but I’ll just have slightly more carbs next weekend, without the dramatic increase and weighing / tracking it all 😅
General rule of thumb, the running community has a dark side of disordered eating that is disguised as "carb loading". There's plenty of runners that carb load properly, but there's also plenty that use it as an excuse to borderline binge eat. Personally, i just stopped with carbs in general about 8 years ago. Aside from the occasional cheat meal, i'm 95% of the time exclusively low/very low carbs (less than 20 carbs per day normally). I've actually found this way of eating supports my running goals better than it did before when I consumed a standard macronutrient split. My recovery is better than it ever was before and my endurance is better than ever. I don't quite have the top speed I used to be able to hit, but its not too far off. A small trade off for never having GI issues anymore. This WOE isn't for everyone, but I like to share my story because I think its important to at least open the topic that carbs aren't necessary for this sport for everyone. Some get by just fine without them and its been a game changer for me.
All of the studies I’ve read supporting beets/beet juice supplements were done with either sick people or untrained healthy people. All the studies I’ve seen with trained athletes showed little to no effect of beet juice supplementation, does anyone have any studies where it improved performance in trained athletes?
Well, I’m not a woman, but I’m a low-carb athlete and too much carbs really bothers me how I do it now I have to start all my runs bastard OK and then I’m using probably about a half or a little less of the carbs than I used to take and I’ve seen everything I used to start race day. Feeling sluggish until almost you those last three days or so Carbs or whatever it is wore out I actually acted like a bagel was the most important thing about my race plan and I run so much better now there is scientific evidence that you can get to a burning state. This is what that tone IQ and all that stuff does, your body can convert if you give it a chance, but it can convert fat to glucose quicker than then sugar to something to think about
Who in the world is gonna be triggered by you carb loading or not? This isn't directed at Liz, just kind of crazy imho that she needs to even preface that. You do you, Liz. If anyone doesn't like your approach they can go fly a kite lol

Hi! I am from the UK and we definitely measures in miles! I don't understand KMs at all lol. Hope it all goes really well.
Love it!! Thank you 😄
