Sci-Fi Classic Review: BARBARELLA (1968)

  • This cult classic from 1968 is an unusual sex comedy that, believe it or not, is one of the most faithful comic book films of the entire Twentieth Century.
    If you're looking for a "review" in the traditional sense, then let me just say I like this movie. This video, however, is a "review" in the literal sense (using the Miriam-Webster definition "a retrospective view or survey"), in that I'm going over the history of the film and its place in sci-fi cinema history.

    THIS film was the final straw! The opening caused the creation of MPAA (THE RATINGS SYSTEM)! This along with Valley of the Dolls, The Fixer, Romeo & Juliet and of course The Thomas Crown Affair subjected to G, PG, M (whatever happened to that?) GP (same thing!), R and tried and true X! Apparently they saw enough Fonda skin to create a whole ratings board! NOW THAT'S AN ICON!!!🤣🤣🤣😇😁

    It's both schlocky and iconic, very much a period piece capturing both what was good and bad about the culture of the late 60s. I have mixed feelings about a remake because Barbarella is SO MUCH a product of its time, but I think if one were made I'd watch it.

      Fonda aaid she'd do it at 75! Now she says she'd play the Black Queen but still do it! BRING IT ON! 😍😍😁

    I love both _2001: A Space Odyssey_ and _Barbarella,_ for very different reasons.
    But for just a moment, imagine _Barbarella_ with the budget and technical skill of _2001._ Same actors, same plot, same tone, but _2001's_ level of SFX.

    There is also a techno project by Sven Vath called Barbarella using samples from the movie.

    Check out Jackie Lee's Barbarella theme tune. Its on facebook. She was asked to submit a song that was ultimately rejected because of studio politics, but imho it was a lot better than what they used on the film. Worth having a look at just for the sake of it, and to see what could have been. Its played over the same opening sequence.

    It’s definitely a unique & out there sci-fi movie, very artsy. The 1980 Flash Gordon must have drew inspiration visually from Barbarella.

    • @rabid_si
      @rabid_si 4 года назад

      Not so much direct inspiration as shared inspiration. Flash Gordon's aesthetic is drawn directly from its earlier namesake and its peers/derivatives of the 30's/40's pulp sci-fi serials.

    I found this channel by accident and I would’ve assumed it would be MUCH larger by the quality of the videos and the frequency of the content too
    Basically, best accident I’ve made, and I hope this channel does grow; if you have any social media, please let me know, would love to follow
    Side note, I noticed your first videos are Alien Isolation play-throughs, so it’s no surprise I love this channel already

    I tried watching this about 15 years ago. I thought I quit watching about 40% of the way through. Watching reviews of 'Barbarella' years later....I was shocked to discover I had in fact watched about 75%. This film's production design and filming style made me feel almost physically sick. 1980's 'Flash Gordon' shows how to approach this kind of material.

    • @jameymonroe954
      @jameymonroe954 2 года назад

      Very claustrophic and nauseating. Vadim who was drunk throughout shot whole scenes upside down, to one side (yikes!) and underneath glass! Fonda was sick several times. She just had Vanessa AND she was bulumic with no down time (Hurry Sundown, Barefoot in the Park, Barbarella AND They Shoot Horses, Don't They?). Plus writing and production design by commitee didn't help matter either! 🤣🤣🤗

    I think for many of us kids at the time barbarella was an anatomy lesson, we wernt really concerned with the plot or storyline or acting

    The "all over the place" is not unusual for the late '60s early '70s. The drunk on set answers the age old question about some movies of the era.

    I'll admit it's not a film I have much affection for; to me it combines "unfunny comedy" with the irritation you get with someone who is not nearly as clever as they think they are. Fifth Element did it much better, albeit with less emphasis on sex.

    I read some of the original comics and it was one of the worst decisions of my life. I didn't enjoy them at all and it was a complete waste of my time. The storylines were all over the place and so uninteresting that I think the movie has a more solid plot by comparison. Seriously, how did something that bland and confusing gain a cult following? 😖

      Everything has its day! You have to remember Playboy came around the same time. Nudity was in vogue along with civil rights. It's a time capsule like Midnight Cowboy or Shaft. Sure it's silly but back in those days what wasn't! Fathom anyone? Caprice? The Happening? Every other Streisand movie after Funny Girl? Same with Minnelli until Caberet and then afterwards...Keep in mind: NONE OF THESE FILMS WOULD BE MADE IN 1982, 2002 OR 2022! 🤣🤣🤣😆😙😙

    I just don't see this as a sex comady or erotic like how this film has been hyped for yes a light comedy but not alot of it the humor is just wasn't there. lol a box office sensation in the UK but we in the UK can't even get the 4k box set to this film just the crappy standard blu ray.
    If we did get a new remake it would be even more toned down lol comedy yes would be alot better, exotic no, sex scenes no, unless it was made for more as 18 certification but who would make a film for 18 nowadays they want to make money and get everyone in the theatre to watch the film not from an adult ratings they won't so i dont think a new barbarella film would be all that good.
    For me it should be made in the style of buck rogers and logan's run and space 1999 mixed in with guardians of the galaxy 2 with that colour and 60's vibe along with thor ragnarok and tom cruise oblivion all mixed together in a big pot to bring out a more modern day barbarella film with the sex and psychedelic vibe and i think that will be very hard to produce in this day of age with this political correctness gone mad.

    Sorry, but you are hopelessly wrong about this film and in the way you dismissed many of the SCI-FI films that came out prior to it in the 1960s. Films like the adaptation of the Perry Rhodan novels, 'Mission Stardust' were good at what they were trying to do at the time--show the men fighting in Viet Nam what it was they were fighting for (protecting women)--and with characters like Thora in the Mission Stardust film, and Barbarella you can see that there was plenty to protect. All the talk about sexuality and (not word about how she changes her outfit in EVERY scene) Barbarella's lustful nature is pointless since that is the essence of the source material, and what is surprising is that you MENTION it at the outset. Barbarella is an EMPOWERED woman--only not empowered in the way that modern SJWs want women to be--you know, as Men lite? She is like a space faring Mata Hari--a real life empowered woman who stepped off the stripper stage and into the pages of history by bedding German generals and then revealing the information they told her to the French military. Sex and attractiveness are (when all is said and done) a female's stock and trade. The fact is that the modern IDEAL of an empowered woman is based entirely on a fiction CONSTRUCT. Without TAXPAYER FUNDED support programs like welfare, SNAP, WIC and section 8 housing, and without Government MANDATED EEOC hiring laws, and speaking of laws the way that the LEGAL system is BENT in all sorts of manner to SUPPORT females there would be no 'independent' women as we know them today. So, Barbarella and Thora and many others of their ilk are far more realistic depictions of Strong Women. Let's try to remember FACTs and we can enjoy a richer life all around.

    • @jameymonroe954
      @jameymonroe954 2 года назад

      True. She uses her sexuality as a weapon! Fonda has said this ad nauseum. That's why she took the role and Bardot DID NOT! 😍😍🤩🤩

      The clunkiness and cheapness (a DeLaurentiis feature not a bug!) Is sooooo worth it! Look at Mandingo, The Hurricaneremake, Conan the Barbarian or the original Dune! The cheesiness and chintzyness are there believe me! I love cinematic scum! 🤣🤣😍😍
