    So one little mistake which irked me was when you called Viipuri "the Russian town Vyborg", at the time Viipuri was Finland's second largest city before the Soviet Union annexed it in the winter war and in it lived mostly Finns. Basically the whole statement was completely wrong in every way, wonderful video though.

    at 1:44 you say when the finns captured the russian town of vyborg, well its a finnish town which was taken from them in the winter war of 39 /40 and it was the second largest finnish city at that time. so its not really a russian town

      Its population had been evacuated. The displaced population was happy enough to resetle the town.

      @@Simon-vv3kl It was ceded without a population. The evacuees settled elsewhere in Finland eventually as the moscow peace border was restored on the isthmus after the continuation war.
      The modern Vyborg retains pretty much none of the ethnic identity it used to have before the winter war and was kind of invented anew for its new population.

      @@jaskapenttila7644 thats the thing im commenting about. In an documentary i watched about him there was a quote from Simo wich read along the lines of: "I shall not fight in the Continuation war, as i shall not attack another man's land".
      My point was just that the comment was wrong.
      I obviously now know that i was wrong and even a quick google search misproved my point lol

    It was a FINNISH town Viipuri stolen by the russkies in the same year.
    Careful choice of words matter. It was a finnish town - and always will be. It is no coincidence that you still find the finnish names to places and towns on google maps today - as hard the russkies tried, they could not make that go away entirely.... even though the original inhabitants fled to the west, and folks living there now
    ruin those places just like they ruin all of russia.

    Look up the historical novel _Stranger in a Stranger Land_ by I can't emember the author, but it's a great story.
    It's a semi-fictionalized recounting of the true story of a small but determined group of Finnish Jews in uneasy alliance with Nazi troops driving the Russians out of Finland.

      No, that is much newer one with lyrics and lot simplified tune. The original is played by Viljo Vesterinen and the Dallapee Orchestra.

    3:32 this is a relatively recent recording of the "Säkkijärven Polkka". The one which I assume was most likely played is the Viljo Vesterinen accordion rendition of the song, which sounds far more obnoxious to have on repeat for days.

      They made it _next to_ Leningrad, but never into the city. And they made a point of not participating in the siege of Leningrad, because they that knew none of their fenno-ugric kin-nations had ever owned Leningrad or its immediate surroundings. This greatly pissed Hitler off.

    The finns never entered leningrad. They stopped outside. I still consider Viipuri an occupied finnish city. It was stolen by the Soviets.
