- Was there a point during MythBusters when Adam Savage thought, "What's next?" How many phone books did the show go through for the Phonebook Friction episode? Why did Grant Imahara and Adam call each other doctor? In this live stream excerpt, Adam answers these questions from Tested members @Righteous Robot, @monkeycircus509 and

Thanks for sharing these memories! It is not always easy.
Good afternoon Adam and crew.
I just had a funny thought, when was the last time you have calibrated your arm ?😊😢😊
I have and love that you’re out here talking about your life story especially MythBusters & still working on things.
I love seeing your workshop.
PS: It still hurts my heart thinking about losing Grant. He was such a great/smart/funny man.
You had the best crew any show could've hoped for ever.
We miss Grant so much 😭 He was always so cheerful, loving and funny. May he rest in peace
What happened to grant?
He passed away in 2020 due to an undiagnosed brain aneurysm according to his Wikipedia page
Rip
So WHO are the world famous liars then??
People have died and came back to life and they have told you what that's like.
But you choose to ignore them.
@Spiker985Studios
he could have done this ........ and survived but that didn't happen.
Why is Adam's father on the show today?
Adam has red hair and it's cut ✂️ in a crue cut style 😎
Millions of us never knew Grant yet all of us somehow knew Grant. Such a special person.
Hello jtderby from btderby of north carolina. My son and I watched every episode of mythbusters and still do at times. I totally agree with you about Grant. He left us too soon.
The mythbuster team are all legends
#parasocial
Every time i remember Grant, i get a smile. Fella had a special sight of our world. An amazing fellow.
Adam, you _are_ "that guy from MythBusters". You always will be. That's both unavoidable and a good thing; MythBusters was the most important TV science show of this century.
Oh, and "the funny-looking one" is also you. Jamie looks like a perfectly ordinary walrus.
Yeah I think maybe he doesn't realize what a big deal the show was. Because there's a big difference between "being that guy from Mythbusters," and being "That guy from Mad Men."
😂🤣😂👍👍
Ya I get people don't want to be typecast as a certain person, but the Mythbusters are singlehandedly responsible for inspiring a lot of kids to become engineers. From other interviews you can tell he's proud of it now, but at the time I could see being hesitant about being shoehorned into that role for his career.
I was just chatting with a friend the other day and I was making a reference to something about Adam, and she didn't get the reference. So I tried to remind her that he was on Mythbusters, and she didn't know what I was talking about.
I found that interesting.
Oof, I get what you mean, really I do, but calling it "the most important TV science show of this century" when there's still 75+ years of it left just seems wrong on a fundamental level... I struggle to imagine what could be more important, but still, there's way too much century left to say anything for certain.
Absolutely the most important TV science show of the turn of the millennium and at least a few decades since.
Any Grant story is always welcome. Plus it's a way to carry on his legacy, thank you for sharing!
That 2 or 3 second pause after Adam says the words "it's an origin story of respect" speaks volumes about their relationship. Over 4 years since Grant passed and talking about him can still have Adam fighting back tears. May we all be fortunate enough to forge such strong friendships.
Gah, I miss Grant. One of those people who passed far too soon. It sounds like he was an absolute gem of a friend.
I know I miss him, I cannot imagine how it feels for those who were gifted enough to know him.
I genuinely shed tears when I head the news, I cannot imagine how unfathomably missed he is by his friends.
"By the way, kids...phonebooks are..." 😂 That was both a great segway and a honest reminder of past and future, one I understand all too well.
How small a town did I grow up in? The county phone book, including yellow pages was about 3/8 an inch thick. The first phone book I ever held more than an inch thick was when I visited NYC in 1978.
I laughed then i realized oh crap, I haven't seen a phonebook in years now.
Man now I feel old... 😂😂😂
@@deezkhajiit184 i saw one yesterday. but it was from the 90s and in the trunk of a car in the scrapyard
Thanks for sharing all these stories! We all miss Grant dearly!
Was he miss Grant?
Oh I didn't know that 😳 😅
Things get more confusing every day 😕
Can we get a show or movie 🎬 made without somebody dying?
Can we complete the job just once without tradjety?
Mr. Adam Savage. As somebody who always had to watch every new episode that came out when I was a kid, you, Jamie, Grant, Tory, and Kari were never "Just those guys from Mythbusters". You were THE Mythbusters.
I mean it with all my heart that you, as well as Jamie, Tory, Grant and Karie, were huge roll models in my life growing up. You showed how fun it is to literally play with science, and to never stop looking for new and amazing things to lean about.
Now, as a 30 year old man, I am still finding excitement when I see crazy experiments people do.
I know this post might sound a bit mushy, but I just hope that you know just how big of an impact you guys made in children's lives when you signed up to help host a crazy idea somebody had for a show called Mythbusters.
The look in Adam's eyes when he started to recall the Grant story made me teary-eyed 😢 you can tell how special their relationship was, and for me, just as a fan and viewer, I have such fond memories of Grant on the show, interacting with Adam. He was amazing.
One of my friends has a special needs son who loves Mythbusters and Grant in particular. They went to an event with Grant and his team(years ago, obviously), and Grant was incredibly kind and understanding of his special quirks. Grant's team was very accommodating, and went well out of their way, above and beyond, to make sure it was a special day for my friend's son. They didn't have to do that at all, it was purely because they wanted to make a little boy happy. Made a huge impact in that boy's life, and speaks to the kind of people Grant surrounded himself with. Grant, you're missed.
When 'Zoob' first came out, I was the primary toy-tester and reviewer for their NZ importer. The Zoob toys helped me to reconnect with my Aspie sons and also really lit-up my Inner Engineer as I looked at all the little details that came together to make such an awesome 'construction toy'. I never knew you had a hand in it, but hearing that you did was no big surprise after seeing all the crazy but amazing contractions you and the MB team built.
I want to say THANK YOU for creating such an amazing 'toy' - it literally helped me to save my relationship with my sons.
I think most actors/talent would give anything to be "the guy from that show" because it means you actually did something that lots of people liked.
Being known as "that guy from that show" is a form of typecasting, which is something I think most actors don't like. If time goes by, and you're still "that guy from that show", it usually means that you couldn't advance with your career, that you got stuck (of course, I'm talking about an acting career, I can't extrapolate that reasoning to other artistic endeavours)
@@Alfonso162008 From an external side, 'That guy from that show' is usually an endearing point of reference to some degree..
I know Tori especially did other work, particularly notable is 'The explosion show' though I don't recall a considerable amount of it. In a sense I can understand the 'This is my magnum opus, and that saddens me' mindset because it being a 'peak' of one's career. At the same time I had a hard time remembering the name of the explosion show. I still however remembered that Tori was a co-host for it.. It's imminent downturn was not a result of Tori, but of the show and the show runners to some degree.
Mythbusters at this point is so engrained that it's hard to not use it as a point of reference.
@@ThatWhichObserves its also different from saying something like "the guy from fresh prince of belair" thats just entertainment.
the crew of the mythbusters actually inspired people and set some people on a course that would change their life and the world forever
an entire generation of engineers and scientists was born from this show.
and thats a legacy worth having
@@Alfonso162008 I think it kind of varies. Some actors wouldn't like it because of type-casting (or that they just didn't see the role as being all that important/bad memories associated with it, like with Star Trek Deep Space Nine's Avery Brooks, and Doctor Who's Christopher Ecclestone), and others might not mind it because it was a mark of honour to be that influential.
RIP Grant. An inspiring figure for so many.
When he said he's been a freelancer most of his employment history, I just chuckled at the thought of Adam in suit and tie, sitting in a cubicle..
I need to say Adam seems to always have a pleasant demeanor and I always come out in a better mood listening to Adam's stories.
WAIT!? The Doctor thing was NOT a Spys Like Us reference?
Ok, good, I'm not the only one...
I'm skeptical it's anything but this.
Doctor
Glad I'm not sick.
I imagine that was still part of it, even though it's not mentioned in the video. Adam even says it the exact same way as in the film.
I remember letting out a mournful sound... an inhuman howl of grief when I found out Grant had passed. I freaked out my family when I did it... and none of them quite understood why. I didn't know him personally... but I'd been watching Grant since his BattleBots/Robot Wars days. He could always make me smile with his enthusiasm and watching Mythbusters got me through some rough patches. Me and my Dad always loved watching it together and still love watching Tested too.
If you read the comments, it actually took 8000 pounds of force to separate the phone books. Great episode, btw. :)
I seem to remember that the brackets broke and the phone books didn't separate.
@@Leonrey-ic1wh The bracket broke when they tried it using forklifts, but they built a better bracket when they tried it with tanks.
@@rolen47 Yeah, they made ones out of steel for the last test with the tanks, and that held.
Grant Imahara was the one guy who was always happy and had that get up and go attitude...he is missed dearly, gone way too soon.
Is it a true friendship if it's never tested over disagreements sometimes. Some would say if you surround your self with people that always completely agree with you, that's not a friendship, it's a echo chamber.
Also r.i.p. Grant
grant imahara was such a large impact on how i viewed things and i grew up admiring him and you guys in general and im grateful to have had mythbusters to grow up warching
I love this channel, respect for Mr. Imahara & for the McMaster-Carr catalogs
Grant was such a great part of the show, his personality was bright and bubbly, and he had so much to teach the younger generations about robotics, electronics, you name it. He will be missed. A bright star went out when he passed. I keep the Freevee stream of Mythbusters going some days, there's so much to learn about everything and Grant was a huge part of it. Knowledge lost is terrible.
Adam, to me you are and always will be Adam Savage from Mythbusters. Please don't be ashamed of that. I'm sure I speak for many others when I say Mythbusters was a large part of my childhood and young adult life.
Love you have the trusty McMaster-Carr sitting out being used. Especially love the projects looking through those pages for the exact thing I need!
How do I get one of the catalogs. I looked on there website and couldn’t find anything.
@joshhamm3695 it's been a bit since I've ordered but they probably want you to order and they will happily "provide" you with the big book!
Grant was a great guy, I was devastated when he passed away :(
There are a lot of jobs like that. A construction worker, for example a house framer, does a quick and efficient job. Once the job is done, now you're out of work. You have to be constantly looking for your next job.
The movie called Spies Like Us has a funny scene where they call each other doctor. I always thought you and Grant were quoting it. Fun to hear the backstory
By the way, the submitter of the question, Righteous Robot, has a RUclips channel where he did a stop-motion animation film called Gruff that is absolutely worth checking out, as well as a slew of shorts going over the entire creative process for tricky scenes, trial and error and the decisions that followed.
5:38 As someone who is currently unemployed I completely relate to this. I probably log more hours working on my portfolio/applying/interviewing/networking now than when I was working full time.
This is such a great story and while I never knew Grant personally he seemed like such a smart, passionate, and impactful person.
Whenever I heard you two doing the "Doctor" "Doctor" it reminded me of the bit between Dan Akroyd and Chevy Chase in Spies Like Us
The doctor doctor is similar to the scene from Spy’s Like Us 😂
Came to say this..
Immediately what I though. I'm just starting the video and assumed they were referencing the "Doctor, Doctor" scene. Love that movie
I thought for sure this would be the reason.
Agreed! I figured the Doctor Doctor reference was to Spies Like Us.
That's exactly what I was thinking!
It was 8,000 pounds of force to separate the phone books, in that episode you mentioned that you could've hang the two cars you used from them
The brackets broke instead.
@@Leonrey-ic1whThe wooden brackets broke, they built more substantial ones before they did the tank test
4:53 Jamie was definitely the "Funny looking one"
Grant will always be fondly remembered
Thank you for myth busters, it gave me something to look forward too in a bad life
Things that seemed like a magic trick, by decade...
2000s Ripping a phone book in half.
2010s Finding a phone book.
2020s Convincing a child phone books ever existed.
Grant was amazing. when he presented he had such a calm presence about him yet you could see the excitement and joy at the same time. Wonderful to watch. the show wouldn't have been the same without him
While you'll always be "that guy from Mythbusters", I'm happy to see that you haven't plateaued, looking back on your better days. IMO, a sign of good mental health is to be always looking forward, and that trait is why we all respect you and enjoy seeing what you're up to.
Mr Savage you are truly awesome. Mythbusters was by far my favorite show growing up. Living in small town Greece as a teenager I will admit our pyromania was inspired by the show. Thank you for your contribution truly.
Doctor, doctor, doctor was a line in the movie “Spies like Us”. From the scene where the other characters think Chevy Chase and Dan Aykroyd are doctors
For me it was "K-PAX". Doctor, doctor. Doctor, doctor. A lot of doctors on this planet....
Grant. Loved him so much! You are missed, Grant! RIP ❤
You are the best and Grant was an amazing person
I saw "Imahara" in the notifications and had to watch immediately. Such an amazing man, gone way too soon.
Adam, you better live until you're hundred because I will absolutely break down if you kick the bucket. You're one of, if not, my main role model in life.
Love you, man ♥
No.
If you're not obsessed with people who shamelessly boast and promote themselves, you might have noticed what I had noticed.
I saw something and I warned ⚠️ the people around me of what to expect based on professional doctors advice on the topic of human beings.
@Gma7788 What?
Loved what Grant added to the show and feel a kindred spirit to his personality and work methods. Gone way too young.
Also loved the phonebook episode! (funny how worried we are about privacy these days, when we used to print and distribute a book containing almost everyones name address and ph numbers 😂 )
Grant stories are always a great reminder of so likable the guy we all miss :/
Thanks for making my childhood great. As a kid I had a DVR with a 100 hour capacity and at multiple points it was filled entirely with Mythbusters episodes.
Watching Mythbusters was a daily thing after school for me, I did enjoy seeing you show up on The Expanse.
When I'm talking about you/describing you to someone that isn't a super fan like me . . . I say, "The younger bouncier MythBuster" and they always know the difference. :-) Clicked past the show just yesterday. Grant was on. Had to keep moving. Too sad. He is missed.
Here i thought it would be "Spies Like Us" reference. A Chevy Chase-Dan Acroyd number about some fools that accidentally become spies. The bit, (spoiler i guess) there's a tent full of doctors, and for a solid minute, the fools and doctors greet eachother with doctor. Comedy rating of "4 Leslie Neilson's"
same
That's probably the true origin. Adam may have forgotten that part of the movie and where it came from. That's just too classic of a movie to not know the reference.
10:54 ❤ There is nothing quite like the feeling of having someone that you see the spark and light in that you respect, turn to you and acknowledge that they see that same spark and light in yourself. Well done, Doctor. ❤
I stage-managed a play at university, and one of the cast was a visiting professor. The head of the drama department had a doctorate of fine arts from Stanford. We had just finished the last show of our run, and the cast was doing their meet-and-greets. The department head walks up and a conversation begins:
"Great work, Professor!"
"Thank you, Doctor!"
It’s really cool to hear you were part of Zoob. I loved playing with Zoobs as a kid. Circa 2001 when I was 4yo, my mom and I took a trip to SF and we got some zoobs there that I played with for many years and do still have as well
Isn't the round table "Doctor. Doctor. Doctor. Doctor. Doctor. " from Spies like Us?
It's still a sign of respect, but it's comedy gold as a gag.
Good, it's not just me that took it that way!
Grant was one of a kind. So, so smart, funny, kind, curious. Gone too soon.
10:20 I thought it was from movie “spies like us” great movie with Chevy Chase and Dan Akroid. And in the on scene they kept saying “doctor, doctor. Nod doctor, doctor, doctor”
Hello my fellow child of the 80's 👋🏼
Its super heartwarming hearing that story! Even if youbgiys weren't on the best terms still having that respect is so special.
Came for any story about Grant, but deeply enjoyed the reminder of the phonebook episode - I remember that being an absolute shock to my younger self!! And it's still astonishing how it do. The world is a wild place.
I live for the contagious warm smile that Adam shows whenever he begins a Grant story.
I lost family members during the Pandemic, and having watched Mythbusters all of my teen years, when I heard about Grant's passing it hurt just as much as it he was part of my family. It hurts me today hearing how much your voice crack ever so slightly when the good memories come back. It's an understatement that he was a dear friend. A hug from way far, Adam.
Grant inspired me so much as a kid
The story about Adam and Grant greeting each other as 'Doctor' immediately made me think of the scene from Spies Like Us, Chevy Chase and Dan Akroyd are being introduced to a group of doctors, and the greeting is pretty much everyone saying "Doctor" to each other. ruclips.net/video/hoe24aSvLtw/видео.html
And Grant is gone way, way, to soon. I got to meet him once when he gave a talk at a local college campus. The talk was free to the community, my eldest (a teen at the time) and I went. Somewhere I have a picture of us with Grant. The world lost a truly great individual when Grant passed.
A noteable portion of Jaques Littlefield's tank collection is now part of the American Heritage Museum, here in Hudson, MA. You can even get tickets to ride, and drive, some of the tanks. It's pretty wild.
You don't say ? 😅
"Just this little thing called Mythbusters." -- one of THE Mythbuster guys. You are more than that now and I'll always remember you from that show. It was iconic.
Also, I got unexpectedly emotional at your story about Grant. It's always those little things that get you the hardest.
Self employment is tough but can be satisfying. If you can't find work you don't eat. Then there's insurance. Get a great accountant. You're constantly looking for work so business is always on your mind. It's hard to walk away from work when Friday rolls around.
I miss Grant!
Myth Busters started airing when I was in high school and already super interested in electronics and engineering. I tried twice to earn an engineering degree, but through the work experience engineering students do I found that the degree holders usually aren't doing what I wanted to do, and I didn't want to have to keep up with courses and ongoing quotas of seminars to maintain a piece of paper that would make me overqualified for what I thought was fun. Fast forward two decades and somehow I've ended up in finance? But I got my current role because the CFO was looking for someone who can persuade NetSuite to do whatever he wants, which is possible if you're a confident JavaScript developer, and that's one of the many things I am... 😅 I constantly feel underqualified for my actual job because I did the education for it so late compared to my coworkers and my "this one time back when I was 20" stories are from unrelated work, but I've done a LOT of things getting to where I am. The blessing and curse of being a smart, creative person in a world that praises putting your head down and doing the same thing until you're 60.
Funny, I always thought you guys were riffing on a scene from Spies Like Us.
Intrigued by your Matrix/Treasure Island comment, I looked up when it was no longer a military base. 1997, apparently. My wife and I lived there on Sturgeon street for nearly 4 years while in the navy. We were there for the Loma Prieta earthquake in '89 - had to ride a tug boat to work in Alameda for a month due to the bridge collapse. We also were there for the Oakland Firestorm in '91. I was working on hobby stuff in the garage when the light through the door seemed to dim. Outside, the smoke was rising and began to block the sun. Crazy. We were the first tenants in our apartment, so it was all fresh and new at the time. I looked at Google street view just now. It looks sadly old and worn. I suppose I do too.
I never saw that as a base, but close timing. I was stationed at Coast Guard Island at the end of '99 and lived in base housing near the gate of NAS Alameda. I was there when they were filming the Matrix movies.
I miss and think of Grant surprisingly often, since I know him only as a fan would and not a close friend. Profound person, deep loss keenly felt.
One year at Salt Lake comic con we had a few Doctor Who guests. So there were lots of doctors in cosplay. Anytime we came across each other we greeted each other in the same “Doctor “fashion.
The doctor bit is something ive actually carried into my adult life at 26 years old from watching the show. I lovingly greet some friends as doctor and they return it
I always thought the doctor reference was dual purpose... respect and the "spies like us" reference with Chevy chase, Dan ankroid, terry gilliam
here i was hoping there was a "Spies Like Us" connection... Miss grant, and can tell you do dearly. Thanks for sharing!
That's cute 🥺 I think of Grant SO often 💔 A friend of mine and I call each other doctor too! He's a playwright/director and I'm a filmschool dropout, neither of us is a doctor of any kind, lol.
I figured the Doctor thing was a gag from the movie Spies Like Us.
I always thought the "Doctor, Doctor" thing was a Spies Like Us reference. I really like that it is more personal and respectful.
Grant always brought an energy to the particular myth being tested. He was taken way, way too soon.May he rest in peace.
The phonebook episode was my first episode, I remember as a kid watching it on my small TV with a group of friends. I don't think we'd trust science as much as we do without that experience.
Nice story. I had assumed you both were quoting "Spies like us" but nice to see it was more personal.
I thought that came from the “Spies Like Us” (1985) Doctor scene with Bob Hope. Me and my brother always make that gag when we have no clue what we are doing but still try and act like professionals! 😂
You know I've been watching (too many of) these videos from the recommendation page for a couple of months now and only just realized that I wasn't subscribed until now
I love seeing Adam talk about Grant with a big smile. 😊❤
The term freelancer is commonly attributed to Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) in Ivanhoe (1820) to describe a "medieval mercenary warrior" or "free-lance" (indicating that the lance is not sworn to any lord's services, not that the lance is available free of charge).
I had just learned the knack of tearing a phonebook in half with my bare hands, when suddenly, there weren't any around for me to show off with...
From Bill Nye to Adam and Jamie, I'll always be appreciated if the engineering put on TV and now RUclips.
Wouldn't be where I am without it.
I thought calling each other "Doctor" would be a story about trying something you both knew nothing about (faking it) like in "Spies Like Us."
I worked for a company that produced electronic devices, and some of the components were very ESD sensitive. We all had to wear these electrostatic dissipative smocks, and we would all greet each other as "Doctor," because that's what we all looked like wearing them.
Back in my BattleBot days (Cleprechaun), I met Grant before Myth Busters. I don’t normally remember strangers 10 seconds after meeting them, but Grant was so friendly I remembered him when I first watched Myth Busters.
I would have bet money the “doctor” “doctor” story was going to be about the scene from ‘Spies Like Us’.
11:19 Anyone else think of Muppets in Space when Adam repeated "Doctor." like that?
Good lord you can see the memories come flooding back with that last question.
My son and I did the phonebook trick about 15 years ago. Of course it worked. :)
At the time, It didn't occur to me in the slightest that there'd be a time without telephone directories.
A bit like friends, I guess.
RIP Grant, and thank you for all the fun you added to the world. :)
You were part of Zoobs in the 90's!? I had Zoobs in the early 2000's! That's really awesome to find out. I loved those toys as a kid.
Meeting Grant by chance in SF was a highlight. So creative, and a terrific problem solver. And the creator of Geoff Peterson. 💀🤖
Huh, I would have thought it was from Spies Like Us.
I went to one of those Mythbusters tours when they were in Salt Lake. The ladies who were weaving the phone books together was one of the bits I most clearly remember. Adam was surprised at how quickly that pair weaved the pages together, citing that was the fastest he had seen anyone do it. He also commented about how Jaime lowered him at a different rate every show.
i absolutely adored mythbusters i still watch episodes today, but i love tested & seeing what everyone does now, i miss Grant he was just such an amazing person! ❤
