Can I Buy Birth Control Pills Without a Prescription

  • Starting in early 2024, people in the United States won’t need a prescription to buy Opill, a new daily birth control pill. Just like ibuprofen, condoms, or emergency contraception, all ages and genders will be able to buy it in stores or online without seeing a doctor first.
As of September 26th, 2023, there is no information on how much Opill will cost or if it will be covered by insurance. Opill will be just one option for birth control, and people can still go to the doctor and receive a prescription for daily birth control pills, which Medicaid and private insurance plans must cover without cost-sharing.
One important note on side effects! While a progestin-only birth control pill has fewer side effects, it doesn’t have zero. Just like other over-the-counter medicine, the FDA determined that an average person can read the label and understand the side effects that could occur when taking the medicine, and decide for themselves if this is the best medicine for them. For more on the FDA’s decision and listed side effects, read the FDA announcement here: www.fda.gov/news-events/press...

The Opill birth control pill can be used by anyone who can get pregnant. People who can get pregnant may have gender identities different from "girl" or "women".
