I really bugs me how little respect Hagar era VH gets. ANY band on the planet would kill for the run of success they had AND the greatest hits record they could put together of Hagar era material.

Sammy's vocals were such an inspiration! A lot of peeps who don't like Van Hagar are specifically aware of the songs that were hits - "Why Can't this be Love," and "When it's Love." If you don't like "Mine all Mine,'" "Judgement Day," "Seventh Seal" etc. then you don't like great hard rock in general!

Sammy's voice was made for Rock and Roll. Such passion. He never sounds like he's phoning it in. He is an all-star vocalist who sometimes gets overlooked due to the era in which he was most productive (videos, hair, leather etc.)as well as the drama that follows the Van Halen bros. He reminds me of Paul Stanley, Ted Nugent, Roger Daltry voices made to Rock Out!!

Reading the comments I realized if Sammy was VH's first singer. In the 70's.
How would Dave be judged as the next singer. Probably not too well.
It's always the first guys who are considered the pioneers and prob get too much credit.

I put Sammy in a class with Steve Perry as far as vocal capabilities. Definitely many classes above the group you mentioned him in. Stanley, Nugent, Daltry are basically in the same class as Roth. Not really singers. Sammy Hagar is a singer.

When It's Love is my favorite song of all time. My uncle had the cassette and I'd beg him to play it over and over while were driving. He'd have to rewind it manually every time but he was happy to it. The song checks off every criteria I look for in pop/rock songs... big chorus, amazing harmonies, oohs and aahs, killer guitar solo... the song has it all for me. Thinking about it, When It's Love probably spawned my criteria for a great song and I'm just comparing other songs to it. Also, it could probably be a part of your series on less remembered 80s classics. Compared to Jump or Why Can't This Be Love, When It's Love is played a lot less on radio, even though it hit no. 5 on the hot 100 at the time.

It's funny that they mentioned that it was a song that so many people got married to. My wife and I also used that song as 1 of the 3 songs we danced together at our wedding reception. We sure got a raised eyebrow from the DJ. We actually had to provide him with our 3 rock songs as he didn't have them in his sappy collection! It's such an awesome song- I loved it then and I still love it- the hallmark of timeless song, its an absolute classic.

I feel a police vibe from feels so good. . It is a great song....actually I see ou812 get panned alot, but I loved it as a 14 yr old listening to it at friends houses etc and I still love it today...I love Cabo wabo and black and blue as well. The knock on the album is the production, but as a 14 yr old those songs were part of that summer for me and reminds me of the girl I chased and finally hooked up with mid summer. The songs on that album will always bring me back .

I wonder if these songs would have happened if David had still been with the group? What singer you prefer may depend on the style of rock you like, but I personally liked the music they put out with Hagar more than with David. The stuff they put out with David, naturally sounds more wild and crazy, which I think reflected their actual youth, but the stuff they put out with Sammy sounded like a group that had mastered its craft.

Love david, but they were more a "show" band with david. More of a "rock" band with sammy.

Dave would have never sang these songs and the lyrics are Sammy's so the songs would have never happened. The Melodies and the keyboards by Eddie and his guitar and Alex on drums Etc yes but Roth never in a million years would come up with these lyrics. Four number one albums in a row. Hardly any rock band does that except the Stone's, Elton John, big name bands.

Sammy brings a love of music to his work. It’s as if he is a fan of what he is doing. Sammy never goes through the motions and has a deep connection to what he does. Michael Anthony is that undertone of Van Halen that made them work out. You can’t have everyone over the top like Dave Lee Roth and Eddie Van Halen because you need a stable and dependable musician who is there but sort of is so low key he goes unnoticed but is still important nonetheless.

People were so busy dismissing Eddie’s keyboard-driven songs that we didn’t get to hear a note-for-note breakdown until now when Sammy spoke. I had classically trained pianists trying their hand on Feels So Good, Right Now, Dreams - wondering where the heck do these patterns and phrasing’s come from. They would marvel at the simplicity of the patterns that created out her worldly goodness. Almost like a universal code that tapped right into one’s soul. Close Encounters stuff !!

OU812 was a great follow up to 5150 and the songs were amazing, proving it was an instant classic. As for the great vocals on when it's love, it shows Michael Anthony was the back bone of VH with his vocals and a true team player. Too bad the VH brothers treated him like crap, like cutting him out of an equal share of the band's profits near the end of the Roth era, and still diss him to this day with some of the comments EVH made not too long ago about showing Mike how to play certain cords, etc. I'm glad that Sammy realized how important and talented Michael Anthony was and that he made him a part of his band when VH replaced him with Wolfie VH. They never sounded the same after Mike was replaced and it shows again how smart and cool Sammy Hagar is. OU812 was a great time in VH history and I look back at it with fond memories. Great channel and I'm loving this.

Poundcake harder than any early VH tune? Are you nuts? Go listen to Atomic Punk, DOA, Somebody Get Me A Doctor, Light Up The Sky, And The Cradle Will Rock, Romeo Delight, Loss Of Control. Do I need to go on? Next time do some research before you post falsehoods.

What? I love Poundcake, but it doesn't have the edge that some of the DLR tunes had. On Fire is probably the most intense VH song, period. Add On Fire, I'm the One, Mean Street, Unchained, Hot for Teacher, House of Pain to Anthony's list.

If there was a song that showed the prowess of VH “Hagar years” it’s When it’s Love!... it had everything that showed what VH was capable of... yea it’s not the most
heavy or rock in’ tune but it displayed what that era of VH became... songwriters!

Love your style - let the people you are interviewing speak. It cracks me up when the interviewer dominates the discussion, it's like hey buddy ( or lady) I do not care what you have to say ... a little, like your intro, is alright though. Well done.

This is the first song, and first VH song, I distinctly remember hearing. I was about 5 years old and some guys were roofing a house just over the fence from me. The sun was setting and "When it's Love" came on their radio. I was instantly mesmerized. I was humming that tune for weeks after hearing it that one time.

Hey Professor! Another guy kinda lost to time is Jude Cole. A View From Third Street is still one of my ALL-TIME favorite albums. I got to see him live around 1990, and it was just an incredible show. Time For Letting Go is phenomenal, as is House Full Of Reasons. The whole stinking album is great! Thoughts?

I all ways thought that Sammy did better for Van Halen than Dave. Sammy brought a grow up style to the band. Better lyrics music class that Dave didn't. With Dave Van Halen was a glorified bar band high school backyard band. Sammy made the respectable rock band. So sorry I am a Van Hagar fan. First number one songs and album under Sammy not Dave. To many covers with Dave because he can't write. Sammy brought writing. 🇬🇧
