Thin Lizzy went through several lineup changes during the 70s. At the beginning the band was a power trio with Eric Bell on guitar. That lineup recorded The Rocker. Phil Lynott played bass and sang while Brian Downey played the drums. Lynott and Downey were in all versions of the band. The classic mid 70s lineup of Thin Lizzy was a four piece with guitarists Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson. After Brian Robertson left other guitarists that took his place in Thin Lizzy were Gary Moore, Snowy White and John Sykes.

I queued all night in the snow for a Thin Lizzy ticket in 1979 - it was worth it for one of THE best gigs ever. Try out Emerald which really shows off the twin guitar sound
Yay! Happy you've discovered one of the greatest bands of all time. Truly! I had the good fortune to discover them before they had their breakout hit in the U.S. with the "Jailbreak" album. I had been introduced to the album "Fighting", which was released just previous to "Jailbreak ", by a college radio DJ. It remains one of my all time favorite albums to this day. Their entire catalog is filled with gems and epics. The "Nightlife" album I guarantee will be Lex's favorite! Enjoy your musical journey with them!
Hi NicknLex, so glad you have reacted to some 'Lizzy'. Saw them live more then any other band in the 70's and they were always awesome! Eric Bell was original lead guitarist on 'The Rocker' but left because could not handle being famous! Since then had Gary Moore twice & Brian Robertson Scott Gorham on twin lead guitars. Still in love with you is even better on Live & Dangerous imo. Too many great tracks to throw at you all at once but try The Cowboy Song, Vagabonds of the Western World, Emerald & Rosin Dubh ( Black Rose ): A rock legend!. Also Horslips are another 70's Irish band worth reacting to.
When I saw them at Ronny Scott's it was Scott Gorham and the great Snowy White who people tend to forget about and I personally rate above Moore. If I remember correctly a young Midge Ure was on Keyboards.
Thin Lizzy was a great Irish band. I was lucky to see them a couple of times live in the mid/late 1970's in the UK. Phil Lynott was a brilliant front man, singer, bass player. Enjoy!
@@InternationalScot Okay, but mostly Irish. Irish due to Phil Lynott’s lineage, “ Robbo” and Brian Downey are Irish too . Scott Gorham’s great guitar work as the American component.
@@chuckhutton5087 Robbo is from Scotland - same town as me in fact - and Scott Gorham is American - even though he was born on St Patrick’s day! The original band had closer ties to Irish music - just listen to the title track of Vagabonds. BTW the late Phil Lynott was only half-Irish and half-Guyanese and he was born in England. I like all the lineups but Eric Bell was the most original guitarist ever to play with them.
@@Databhoy Thanks for the reply, Jake. I realize all of that regarding the band members lineage, but still consider Thin Lizzy in all their glory as an Irish band. Phil was an Irishman at heart and hearth. Brian, Eric and Phil were a great 3-piece. Love the “VOTWW” album. Peace to you and yours.
That guitar solo on the second song was indeed Gary Moore! Same guy that did Still Got the Blues. Similar chord progression too. Absolutely incomparable player!
Yes!!! St. Patrick’s week starts off greatly with the greatness of Ireland’s best ever rock band!! Thanks so much for this Marathon!! Was hoping “The Cowboy Song “ was one of the three, but we’ll take it!!
They're whole entire catalog is amazing one of the most underrated bands ever they are a true rock band The best twin double guitar band ever Rest in peace Phil +GARY
Thin Lizzy were a great band that specialised in melodic hard rock songs, there were a lot of rock bands who ploughed the same furrow back then, UFO were another prime example. Thin Lizzy even had hit singles in the UK, their first being Whiskey In The Jar an old traditional Irish folk tune first popularised by The Dubliners. The first song you heard The Rocker was from Vagabonds Of The Western Worlld their third album, and last album with guitarist Eric Bell. They were still a three piece back then with Brian Downey on drums, and the incomparable Phil Lynott on vocals and bass. The classic lineup though featured Lynott, Downey, and Brian Robertson (who improbably joined Motorhead after he left Lizzy) and Scott Gorham on guitars. They had a dual guitar sound similar to Wishbone Ash. Normally I'd always recommend listening to a bands studio versions of songs, but you have to listen to Live And Dangerous, one of,the best live albums ever. There's always been controversy how many overdubs were done on it, whether it was all 'truly live', but it is such a brilliant album.Side 3, which goes from Cowboy Song, The Boys Are Back In Town, Don't Believe A Word, Warriors and finally Are You Ready is one of the best sequences of songs on any live album. They were one of the best live bands I ever saw., think I saw them 3 times although the memorys a bit hazy. Didn't get to see the classic lineup I mentioned, nor with Gary Moore, although I did see Gary solo. I first saw them in 1982 when Snowy White was with them (occasional Pink Floyd sideman), on the Renegade Tour. Later John Sykes joined them formerly of Tygers Of Pan Tang and after Lizzy he gained more fame when he joined Whitesnake. The last time I saw them was Reading Festival 1983, which was Lynotts last gig in Britain, he sadly died three years later. Still In Love With You was Brian Robertsons tour de force, but the version on Live And Dangerous is the one, he just soars.
Lizzy have so many great songs - Jailbreak, Emerald, Black Rose, Rosalie (a Bob Seger cover), Killer on the Loose, Whiskey in the Jar (a trad folk song also covered by Metallica), Cowboy Song (covered by Supersuckers) and on and on.
Saw Thin Lizzy live in 1983 when I was 14. The last Lizzy tour before he died. Still haven't seen a band that compares live. Live and dangerous is one of the best live albums ever recorded. Iron maiden were hugely influenced by Phil Lynott and Thin Lizzy.
You’ve struck gold with this band guys. I think they hold the record for touring,3 and a half years constantly on the road. Pick anything really, but Live and Dangerous is their benchmark. Phil Lynott,RIP,and the rest of the band are the best ever to come out of Ireland, read and weep Bono.
Absolutely, CR!! Everything you texted was pure Veritas, and I stated in an earlier comment that Thin Lizzy are the greatest Irish rock band ever!! U2 aspired to be as good as Thin Lizzy. Bass player extraordinaire and main songwriter Phil Lynott set a standard for all Irish rockers to strive for. Though he had his demons, he by all accounts was a decent, honorable man. Contrary to Bono he paid his taxes, and if he had a charitable foundation he would not have ripped it off.
Its starnge to hear someone say they have never heard of Thin Lizzy. The one album to listen to is the CLASSIC live album Live and Dangerous. #nicknlexrequest
Thin Lizzy were huge here in the UK, especially through the late 70s. The main man, Phil Lynott, wrote the songs, played the bass, and sang the vocals! THE version of Still In Love With You is on their 1978 album Live & Dangerous (there's also a great version by Sade!). It's interesting that you mention Gary Moore, as he was a member at various times in their career! If you can, check out the video version of Live & Dangerous; they were an amazing live act. I saw them supporting Bachman-Turner Overdrive in 1975! Other top songs include Emerald, Roisin Dubh (Black Rose), Warriors, Bad Reputation, The Sun Goes Down, ... Enjoy!
Brian Robertson said he couldn't improve on Gary's solo so that's why Gary's solo was left in. Also I believe Gary said he co-wrote Still in Love with You, but Phil didn't give him any credit!
Its been far too long since I've listened to any Thin Lizzy. Your reaction will change that for sure. I saw Lizzie live many times back in the early 70s... Another Greyhound pub in Croydon venue regular, and one of the best live bands at the time. Nicks comments about Gary Moore was spot on, as Gary was one of the guitarists for a time, alongside Scott Gorham. I'm sure I won't be alone in recommending their Live And Dangerous album..... Just grab a beer, stick on some headphones, and jump back some to live 70s heaven..Cheers, Bob.....
Lizzy we're hungry in 73, that they did an album using the name Funky Junction with 2 added members playing Deep Purple and other covers. RIP Philo and Philomena
Some songs in the vein of "Still in love with you"; try "The Sun goes down" and "Black Rose" and listen to the live versions on "Thin Lizzy Life Live". You will surely enjoy these 2 songs.
The late great Phil Lynott ♥️ this band never really got the recognition they deserved . 70’s Irish band . I loved them . Waiting for an alibi is my favourite. 👍🏻
I'll join the choir : You have to hear "Live and dangerous." I love Thin Lizzy, but none of their studio albums, is anywhere near as great as that epic double live album!
Fantastic I was taken to their first UK gig for my birthday on 23rd March 1971 at Ronnie Scott's club by my older brother and been a fan ever since. Check out "Diddy Levine" still one of the greatest song they did. In my opinion.
Great Irish band with Phil Lynott, lead vocalist, principal songwriter and bassist. Unfortunately only had limited success with “Whiskey in the Jar” and “The Boys Are Back in Town” among the best known, here in Australia, however I think we’re quite popular live. That was Gary Moore on “Still in Love with You” ❤️🤘🎸🇦🇺
Big props to Nick for this request, it was a great way to introduce you guys to a few different sides of the band. They cover a lot of different styles but always inject their strong, unique identity into it. I had only ever heard “The Boys Are Back in Town” until a couple years ago. When I finally dove into some of their albums I quickly became hooked and they’re now one of my favourite bands of all time! It’s a shame they’re still unknown by most people. The first song you heard was from their original lineup with Eric Bell as the lone guitarist, before he was replaced by the duo of Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson, completing the “classic” lineup along with founding members Phil Lynott on bass and vocals and Brian Downey on drums. As some other commenters have said, Gary Moore played the solo on “Still In Love with You”, he also played on the whole Black Rose album. Absolutely fantastic player! You guys definitely need to hear some more of their songs, it’s hard to pick just a few but I would suggest “Wild One”, “Emerald”, “With Love” or “The Sun Goes Down”. Thanks for checking out another “new to you” band and for the great video as always! 🤘🤘
@@TheCornishCockney That makes sense. I’m 25 and live in Canada and they’re not very big over here these days from what I’ve seen. I’ve never heard anyone here mention them.
Nice to see young people finding Phil Lynott's Thin Lizzy for the first time. You are so lucky ! Ultimate live album Live & Dangerous is a must listen to. I was lucky enough to see them live 3 times here in England.
Eric Bell played guitar on this album. He was followed by some stellar guitar players afterwards like Gary Moore, Scott Gorham, and John Sykes. Brian Downey played the drums and Phil Lynott sang and played bass of course. Massively underrated band in the US.
Thanks for the Thin Lizzy review. I am sure someone mentioned already that they are Irish and Gary Moore (also Irish) spent some time as a member of Thin Lizzy). Here is another little known Irish band called Dea Matrona. They are pretty diverse but are classic rock. The songs are short so here are four: Siren Song ruclips.net/video/CbbyDxt1Btc/видео.html, Nobody's Child ruclips.net/video/OTIv93rynjA/видео.html, Glory Glory (I am Free) ruclips.net/video/M-ByDtOKK_U/видео.html and Make You My Star ruclips.net/video/VGyFc7PSXzg/видео.html (live Irish tv appearance video). See if you can guess the years active before the video.
Love that you have had a deep dive into some lesser known tracks. Props to Nick for the suggestions. Live from 76 to 79 they were untouchable!! Live & Dangerous double album captures this, but they left some killer cuts off it, namely Opium Trail and Johnny. These can be found on the Philadelphia 77 tapes. All on RUclips. Enjoy the dive! 😎
Still in love with you has always been my all time favourite ballad ,the most raw / genuine/ gorgeous/ heartbreaking love song I've ever heard !! It still makes me cry like a baby to this day !! I can't listen to that song w/ o crying !! His emotion in this song is unreal ,too painful & beautiful !!! ,maybe the best ballad in the history of rock music ever !!! 💔💜🥁🐉🎤🎶🎄💞
The Allman Brothers , Wishbone Ash , Thin Lizzy and early Judas Priest are all considered pioneers of the twin guitar sound . Check out '' The Boys are back in town '' and '' Holy War '' . . .
💚 Great ear, Nick, it was Gary Moore! Front man/lead vocalist/bassist/writer, Phil Lynott, was a black Irishman. What a remarkable talent...poetic & soulful, yet firmly, hard rockin'. As others have testified, they're one or the pioneers of the tandem guitar riff. "Rocker" had some Johnny Winter influence in it's lead work...again, on "Still in Love With You", Nick spotted the Carlos Santana influence, (especially the outro), in Moore's lead guitar. ☆ 45 years ago, this Friday, March 18, 1977, during a St. Patrick's Day ☘ hangover, I was fortunate enough to see Thin Lizzy, including Gary Moore, open for Queen. ♡ Respectfully, even during my high school days, I preferred the Irish rockers to Queen...at least I saw them before their post-"We Are the Champions"/less aggressively creative, more commercial, era. Here's the likely setlist for both bands; 👉 (03/13/1977), which may be similar: Jailbreak Massacre Emerald Still in Love With You Warriors Don't Believe a Word Cowboy Song The Boys Are Back in Town Queen setlist: Tie Your Mother Down Ogre Battle White Queen (As It Began) Somebody to Love Killer Queen The Millionaire Waltz You're My Best Friend Bring Back That Leroy Brown Sweet Lady Brighton Rock '39 You Take My Breath Away White Man The Prophet's Song Bohemian Rhapsody Stone Cold Crazy Keep Yourself Alive Liar In the Lap of the Gods... Revisited Now I'm Here Big Spender Jailhouse Rock God Save the Queen
Went to see them in 82 in Galway, Ireland. Been hooked ever since.great to see the young un’s discovering these Irish legends. (Except for Scott, from your own sunny California❤)
A time when real talent reached the charts. The Rocker reached No 11 in the UK singles chart in 1973, The original Lizzy 3 piece lineup of Phil Lynott - bass guitar, lead vocals, Eric Bell - lead guitar, Brian Downey - drums
Jim FitzPatrick did all the artwork on the covers depicting Irish mythology, which Phil Lynott was really interested in. He was a rare black Irish man in the 70s, asked what it was like he said "like a pint of Guinness" 😁
Hi guys, Love Thin Lizzy - "Rocker" was their 1st single which I bought on 7" vinyl when it came out..Great track. Well people have already pointed out Gary Moore was in early Thin Lizzy before going solo....He was one of two lead guitarists and he sang on that 2nd track which was also mentioned - You must hear the live version > "Live & Dangerous" ...So, my favourite track by them, is from the Thunder & Lightening album, called "The Sun Goes Down" and it uses a synth to great effect in a very atmospheric ominous track. I also want to mention - the album "Jeff Wayne's ; War Of The Worlds" [ original version ] and features Phil Lynott as Nathanial on one of the tracks. Just brilliant the entire album - You may already know "Forever Autumn" by Justin Hayward from The Moody Blues singing. It is on this same album. - & finally - Do checkout Phil Lynott's solo album "Solo In Soho" which also features Mark Knopfler giving a Dire Straits feel to the track "Kings Call" about the death of Elvis Presley, as well as Gary Moore and even Snowy White makes an appearance. [ Snowy did the wonderful "Bird Of Paradise" song ] & he plays lead guitar on the live dvd + album of Roger Waters > "In The Flesh", including one of the two guitar solos on "Comfortably Numb". Hope you don't mind my ramblings. Love your reaction to this great band and lets have more. Thankyou X Jim
The second vocal on Still In Love With You on the Nightlife album was by Frankie Miller, Gary played lead guitar on that track. Brian Robertson had just replaced Gary in the band and the track was already recorded, he was told by Phil Lynott to play a different solo but Brian refused saying it was perfect as it was. Brian really nails it on the Live And Dangerous version though backed by Scott Gorhams second solo makes it the definitive version.
What a great and genuine reaction to my favorite band of all times. I was lucky to see them in my Dutch home town with the original singer Phil Lynott. You want a longer version of Still in love, there is a great one from the album Live and Dangourus. For Marley try the live of a blues singer live in Sweden. Enjoy!🤘
Eric bell guitar player on The Rocker is the most overlooked ok player I can think of,iv seen him many times and met him too,a lovely friendly man and also a brilliant original player.🎶🎸
Just to recap - first song is off last album with first label and founder guitarist Eric Bell. They were folksy and low-key psychedelic and had had one hit (Whiskey in the Jar). Eric Bell jumped ship mid gig and they were dropped by Decca. Singer/bass player Philip Lynott recruited childhood friend Gary Moore to cover dates, then they thought they’d get two guitarists to not get left high and dry again. After two guys that didn’t work out they got Scott Gorham and Brian Roberson in for Nightlife _but_ that tasty solo was Gary Moore’s off of the demo, they couldn’t improve on it. On Live and dangerous Brian Robertson has evolved it a bit, but it’s basically Gary’s solo still. Robertson basically ended Thin Lizzy in the states by getting injured in a bar fight so they had to cancel a tour when they had been about to kick it up a gear in the US after the boys are back in town, so Philip was angry with him. Bad Reputation was _supposed_ to be a trio, but they brought Brian back under caution and he delivered some of the greatest solos, but he didn’t make the album art. More lineup changes followed (Gary came back for a bit, among other things), but that’s another story
Ah my favourite band, Thin Lizzy are criminally underrated. They were a great band, personal favourite for me is the Johnny the fox album. Live and dangerous in an absolute must listen to and really captures the energy they had on stage
Monday marathon suggestion...with a theme...Start with 'The Party', follow it with 'Blue River Liquor Shine' and finish it with 'Hangover' all from the band Max Webster featuring our Canadian 70's face melting guitar player Kim Mitchell (no relation to me or Joni) Thanks for even considering this and have a rockin day.
Eric Bell on guitar for The Rocker. This is a killer song and many people overlook his contributions to Thin Lizzy in the early years. Fender Strat blues star in his time with TL.
Saw them in 73 near Norfolk when whiskey in the jar got to No 4 in the UK charts. Twin guitars and a very good.drummer. Phil, the coloured bassist died of drug overdoses. Because he was famous no hospital would admit.
Thank you guys so much for reacting to another one of my all-time favorite bands. Any Thin Lizzy song you choose is going to be amazing! Iron Maiden were heavily influenced by Thin Lizzy. Check out the Maiden version of the Thin Lizzy song Massacre. If you guys get a chance, check out a documentary about Thin Lizzy. Their Behind The Music episode is a good one. When I saw them at Ronny Scott's it was Scott Gorham and the great Snowy White who people tend to forget about and I personally rate above Moore. If I remember correctly a young Midge Ure was on Keyboards.
Phil really sounded like Hendrix singing in that first tune. Love some Thin Lizzy. Band is always under the radar.
Gary Moore with Thin Lizzy
1 )" You Can do anything You Want"
(circa 79) 🔥 🔥
Ahhh the great Gary Moore! Thin Lizzy is always a great pick. 3 lead guitarist!
Thin Lizzy was a great Irish band. I was lucky to see them a couple of times live in the mid/late 1970's in the UK. Phil Lynott was a brilliant front man, singer, bass player. Enjoy!
Irish, Scottish, American and English.
@@InternationalScot that was like the 3rd version of the band - the Stadium Rock version - I prefer the all-Irish lineup.
The live version of Still in love with you is, believe it or not, even more beautiful
Lizzy have so many great songs - Jailbreak, Emerald, Black Rose, Rosalie (a Bob Seger cover), Killer on the Loose, Whiskey in the Jar (a trad folk song also covered by Metallica), Cowboy Song (covered by Supersuckers) and on and on.
i dont consider rosalie a cover really ...i mean , i know it is ....but they put so much new arrangement into it .....i think they own it now
I love Thin Lizzy’s guitar sound! They have so many great songs! And Phil Lynott’s voice is second to none…
The greatest Thin Lizzy song is Borderline. Also Boys are Back in Town, Opium Trail, Don't Believe a Word. Go for the studio versions.
Emerald cowboy song
Saw Thin Lizzy live in 1983 when I was 14. The last Lizzy tour before he died. Still haven't seen a band that compares live. Live and dangerous is one of the best live albums ever recorded. Iron maiden were hugely influenced by Phil Lynott and Thin Lizzy.
I was 15 👍
You’ve struck gold with this band guys.
Johnny the Fox Meets Jimmy the Weed
Nice one Nick and Lex!Great to see you react to Thin Lizzy 👍 loved your enthusiasm! Great!thanks so much guys
Enjoy!
Can't go wrong with the Lizzy. Great selection of tunes too.
You should react to the entire Jailbreak album. All songs are stellar!
One popular song of theirs that deserves a listen is Cowboy Song
I LOVE that the guitar on Still In Love With You reminds you of Gary Moore!
Brian Robertson said he couldn't improve on Gary's solo so that's why Gary's solo was left in. Also I believe Gary said he co-wrote Still in Love with You, but Phil didn't give him any credit!
GREAT REACTION! KEEP EM' COMIN' MY ROCKY MTN FRIENDS...KENT
As you've read
Cowboy song
Dancing in the moonlight
Showdown
3 very different songs- so diverse and talented! Oh my land
There were a couple of bands that really pioneered the twin guitar harmony sound in the 70’s. Thin Lizzy and Wishbone Ash.
Indeed and the Ash formed before Lizzy in 1966 so I think they can be termed the first pioneers of twin guitar harmony
@@stevenaustin8274 Love them both dearly.
Nope! Listen to And Your Bird Can Sing by The Beatles.
@@shyshift hmm love the Beatles as I do and indeed the song but I can’t see that as a harmonisation of dual guitarists in the same context
@@stevenaustin8274 yeah it’s only one song.
I'm totally amazed to the fact you've never heard of Thin Lizzy, the greatest band to come out of Ireland.
Thin Lizzy and UFO are two of most underrated bands of all-time! Both should have been in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 20 years ago!
Lizzy we're hungry in 73, that they did an album using the name Funky Junction with 2 added members playing Deep Purple and other covers. RIP Philo and Philomena
one of the greatest rock bands of all time..check out all of their albums from 74-80
Seeing these live from the front row in London at the Hammersmith Odean, was one of the best gigs I've ever been to!
Hammy Odeon 77, 78, and Wembley 79 with Robbo, my best gigs EVER. And I've seen thousands 😎. Golden days my friend.
@@tenchmagic yes indeed mate
Some songs in the vein of "Still in love with you"; try "The Sun goes down" and "Black Rose" and listen to the live versions on "Thin Lizzy Life Live". You will surely enjoy these 2 songs.
There's also Sarah for a softer song.
Thin Lizzy, really! You opened the fault guys. I had some on vinyl. Keep up the great work. Love the shirt Nick!
Jailbreak - Boys Are Back in Town- Cowboy Song - Whiskey in the Jar are their most known songs.
Superb introduction to a legendary band. Good choices. I would suggest "Emerald" as a must visit Thin Lizzy track.
Saw them perform that at The Rainbow in North London in ‘78 and of course,it was magnificent.
@@TheCornishCockney Incredible. I'm envious as I was never able to see them live.
Almost anything off of Jailbreak is a classic!
Fun marathon. Thanks, Nick. Bad-ass Boys of Thin Lizzy. ☘️ Perfect month too. Great reaction, NnLnM. ✨🤪
The best line up was with Gorham and Roberson on leads .the only version of still in love with you in my opinion is from the album live and dangerous.
Yes agree
Not here in the UK and Ireland where they were huge in the 70’s,and built a rep as an incendiary live act.
Brilliant.
@@TheCornishCockney That makes sense. I’m 25 and live in Canada and they’re not very big over here these days from what I’ve seen. I’ve never heard anyone here mention them.
Love that someone finally reacted to Thin Lizzy stuff that isn't The Boys Are Back in Town, Whiskey in the Jar, and Jailbreak!
Nice to see young people finding Phil Lynott's Thin Lizzy for the first time. You are so lucky !
Ultimate live album Live & Dangerous is a must listen to.
I was lucky enough to see them live 3 times here in England.
When my mother, God rest her soul, heard The Rocker, said it was like an assault on her senses... I loved that !
Phenomenal guitarist
ERIC BELL on The Rocker.
Thanks guys.
Hello from Holland 🔥🎸👍💪
The Allman Brothers , Wishbone Ash , Thin Lizzy and early Judas Priest are all considered pioneers of the twin guitar sound . Check out '' The Boys are back in town '' and '' Holy War '' . . .
This solo IS played by Gary Moore. The second, guest, vocalist (with the grittier voice) is the brilliant Frankie Miller. Great reaction, guys!
On Still in Love With You , of course 😉🙂
Kick ass band hehe
One of the best live rockers in the 70s
As you just heard hehe

The cover work was by Irish artist Jim Fitzpatrick who is famous for the Che Quevara poster image in so many college dorms.
Still in Love With You - The best Lizzy song ever in my book. Immaculate! :)
Unfortunately the Thin Lizzy story has a sad ending.
