In South Africa, all Discovery models and Range Rovers have a market...Some people don't want the defender they want the Discovery and some they want the Discovery sport. People with the same brand but old models are more likely to buy an updated model of the same brand...
Jesus, nothing is working. How can these cars be called luxury? Shame on JLR. I would be very angry if I paid that much money and ended up with so many faults. Marek, your test drives are one of the best on RUclips, keep it up. "Land f...ng Rover"😂😂😂
Beautiful Interior but the technical faults would drive me crazy. Great review and Landrover were right on queue and didn’t disappoint with the technical gremlins but very funny 😂😂.
I think you will find that the Discovery, Range Rover Sport and Defender share the majority of chassis components and drive trains. The Velar and F Pace similarly. Evoque, Discovery sport and E Pace also share a lot. I chose a 2022 Discovery D300 over the Defender because I regularly do 2500km each way trips twice a year. The discovery is roomier, quieter and more comfortable and on snow covered mountain roads not noticeably less capable.
From (possibly) all British cars, I truly love the Disco . . but the reason for the bonnet mechanism to be broken is, unfortunately, no accident. You see, the bonnet in these magnificent beasts needs to be opened more often than the driver's door. 😅 You would think they would've figured out reliability with so many years on the market, but the changes of ownership are the obstacle which people seems to be missing. A new owner comes with new requirements, usually up to a price, which for a luxury brand like LR would mean re-engineering components to meet the new criteria. This cannot be overstated and unfortunately the Disco is the most "popular" example...
I’ve owned a 2019 discovery and currently own a 2024 defender and the discovery has way less road noise and is more comfortable inside with better places to put things. The defender looks better but has a horrible console with no place to sit your phone and be able to view waze app turn by turn list (in addition to the map on the pivi screen) without buying a third part tray from amazon. Also discovery has softer seats, more width in the seats and leg area as well as more storage in the back. Finally, the discovery has 2 glove boxes one of which will lock in valet mode. The defender has one VERY small glove box that does not lock in valet mode.
"...having to choose between the Defender and the Discovery, I'd..." rather walk! When Ford bought Jaguar and Land Rover, they told Jaguar to teach LR how to build cars properly and LR to teach Jaguar how to make money. Somewhere along the line, something went wrong and now Jaguar is just a boutique LR brand with good old LR quality. I'm just an inverted snob because I couldn't buy (or run) one of these unless I remortgaged my house, but even if I had the money and the space, I'd rather buy something Korean or Japanese...and I'm a Brit who should want to be proud of JLR.
Yes, they do seem to have reliability issues that should not make it into production cars or be quickly eliminated based on service feedback. However the service seems overwhelmed by WTF went wrong, and the customer, who should not have to deal with this, gets stranded. All the marketing BS about how the new infotainment system will remind you to leave home early, because it knows there's traffic and you have an important meeting doesn't matter, when the car won't start.
I really feel that Land Rover keep shooting themselves in the foot with their strategy of having all these models focussed towards a similar segment of the market instead of just having one or two and making them work properly. The Discovery kind of sits in no-man's land of being a bit too luxurious and expensive for a lot of the market, while also not being a luxury car. Anyone who wants the off road ability and tough looks will go with the Defender, and luxury buyers have multiple Range Rovers to choose from.
You are missing the point on the Discovery...this is more of a trashing of the car rather than a review....This is the best luxury off roader SUV in the market, except for the Range Rover..... The Defender drives like crap! its an overpriced Wrangler, the interior sucks too
I completely agree. I think Marek has made up his mind with Defender and this video just did well on trashing the Discovery. I am a 2018 D5 HSE Dynamic owner. I'm at 48k miles now. My issues are the leaking screen which was resealed at Land Rover and a leaking coolant. I've never had issues as described on this video. After all, this is a newer P360 variant. The Discovery 5 is indeed under rated. Unfortunately Land Rover marketed the Defender more but this vehicle is very capable off road and nothing compares to the 3rd seat on this.
@@bernelnery2191 I drove all Land Rovers, so I know how much better ride the Disco has, better noise insulation, better handling, seats more comfortable, much bigger inside, etc! I owned one for 2 years, a 2022 p360
As an owner of this current D5 (previously owned a 2018 model) I found this review hilarious. Land Rover owners are an unusual bunch. We suffer through all of the niggles and reliability issues and what do we do? Trade the damn thing in for another one!! Utterly stupid and I make no excuses for my lack of brains.
love land rover but the reliability issuies really put me off tbh. My father has had like two the older model range rover sports and the newer ones (both where like 2 years old at the time) and both had many many problems
I don't get it. Go buy a Lexus. Or a Toyota. Or a CX90.... or a BMW, or Audi... Looks like you had fun with this Marek.. LOL. Oh, and I wouldn't buy a Defender either. Too expensive relative to the competition.
I liked your honest opinions and the quirks on the DISCO...which probably exist o the Defender too...though, I haen't heard anyone menitone them yet. LR/RR has been known for their reliablity issues...i guess they haven't irnoned them out yet. :) So maybe if you're in this market for a expensive luxry SUV...maybe we should look at the Benz AMG G-wagon : instead... otherwise...look at hte Toyota Land Cruiser....which i thoght had more ground clearane than 9"....though in the end since most will ony be drivng in the city anway...doesn't actually matter... heh...
I have a 2018 model, brilliant car couldn't recommend it enough… maybe been lucky but the amount of small little quirks like boot load space, storage space, firm drive vs defender is much better, i loaded an ikamper on it and ultimate all rounder, i had a defender 2 years ago and while lovely car to look at not as nice drive switched to a RR sport recently much better have to say, everyone to there own !
Gremlins aside, the Discovery is a highly versatile and accomplished car. Real shame the interviewer chose not to mention the vehicle’s many positive and compelling attributes when playing to the audience with his excessive and self-satisfying cynicism. I drive a Range Rover Sport presently and have had 5 Range Rovers, 3 other RR Sports and 2 Discoveries over the last 25 yrs. Not one has broken down on me, and all were purchased as new vehicles. I often wonder how many of those individuals who make a point of criticising the Land Rover brand for unreliability have ever owned and/or properly experienced one of its models.
Thanks for the review Marek, it's our regular Saturday morning watch now with my partner (although she watches it more cos of your jokes/sarcasm. 😁 ) So in this case, for 75/110k EUR you get a car where the touch buttons, seats, hood opening works only occasionally? People always sh.t on KIA and Hyundai, but they cost a fragment of this money, and everything is convenient and works immediately and quite likely on the long run too. I would have a good, fully functional car for cheap(er) vs leather armchairs on wheels with broken features any day. (I also can't comprehend why people buy a car with an even marginally dysfunctional infotainment that makes every trip just a little painful, but that's a comment for another day.)
I'm honoured you like to spend your Saturday mornings in my company :) Yes, you pay 100k, and get something that may or may not always work. And I agree a large Hyundai/KIA SUV will probably do a better job on everyday basis, as long as you don't go off road with it. With smaller rims, and all-terrain tires the Discovery would be very capable off road. Assuming you actually need it to be. Because it's probably going to spend most of its time doing school runs, in which case Hyundai/KIA is probably a better choice.
I've heard 'nothing shows better that you can't afford Range Rover than Discovery' so many times. I see them every single day, ale every time they are driven by women for a school run, I guess they are at least a second car for the household so there is no drama if you have to call AA. I would buy Defender instead every single time.. or Ineos Grenadier AND Skoda Kamiq for the same price ;)
Your review suggests that JLR has lost interest in the Discovery and shifted much of its development energies into the Defender. The Discovery seems neutered compared to its historical niche in the Landrover product line.
For now. They have to bring this generation to an end, and then JLR will do that "House of Brands" thing they announced last year. Discovery, Defender and Range Rover will become three (sub-)brands without focusing too much on the Land Rover name. Hopefully each of the (sub-)brands will then have some distinctive characteristics.
They should rename the acronym JLFR Thanks for the great review, with all the shortcomings... and no advantages over competitors at all. That's why they are not popular. Objectively, a failed model. P.S. ...and by the way...I’d better look at the review of the second model, from the preview photo))) didn't see it right away
WOW to think that company who can't sort out anything electrical is going to produce all electric cars in couple of years. Irony doesn't even begin to describe it. Otherwise I adore JLR but owning one would make a gulag more pleasant experience in comparison.
The only people that would spend money on these cars are ones that don't do any research about cars. They don't look at reviews or reliability ratings. They like the way it looks and feels. Everyone else buys Japanese German / Korean.
I’ve owned 9 rovers over the years. I’ve had trouble with only 1. I’ve owned 2 fords that were less reliable, less comfortable, and less capable. I’ve owned 1 Toyota which has been as reliable as an anvil. But it is less comfortable and less capable.
D3 was the pinnacle of Discovery. Anything before was clearly good but on its way to greatness. And everything after D3 was a downhill, and increasingly uglier and less reliable effort
It’s an ugly looking thing to us LR purists! I’ll stick with my 2005 LR3, which has just sailed through its MOT test. It looks good, is great to drive, doesn’t have loads of over-complicated unnecessary gadgetry and is still reliable. All the D5 does, is give LR a bad name. I love LR, but it has to be the classical stuff that has proven itself, for me.
This is my first time watching you, I wish you didn’t use profanity..like the F word.. also I found you really negative and bios tours the brand. Not apealing overall
No thanks it looks like crap and I don't care for electric, hybrid or diesel engines! Plus not worth the ridiculous price and you can't even open the hood to show the engine 😅 I'll be keeping my 2008 Discovery 3 SE 4.4 V8 with 99K miles and still going! Cheers 🍻 🇺🇸

Fantastic look , great car
JLR providing a motoring journalist with a vehicle with several faults. You couldn't make it up & it doesn't bode well for long term reliability.
Yeah, not the smartest move.
When I told the press fleet manager everything that's wrong with this car, they seemed surprised :)
Pull the engine open handle and have someone push down on the bonnet at the same time. It’s just a quirk. 🤣🤣🤣
Defender, any day. The Land Rover Discovery is having too many issues.
I'll take the tram.
Cool
It is really nice, I was looking at used ones as they are dirt cheap, but it is just not cool at all, unlike the Range Rover, Evoque and Defender.
Now you know, why they are so cheap :)
I would recommend a used Land Rover, but only to my worst enemies…
