It says a lot that rimuru's was so terrifying, effective the world gave him an insta Kill skill just to get it over with. Some of the soldiers that were shot were still alive, missing an arm leg, kidney balls screaming, kill me.
Just putting it out there, the anime version was mild, since Rimuru was intentinaly not going for just kills, so people had limbs blown off and so on, so the screming and general panic was what gained him the mercyless skill.

The thing about novel (LN & WN) Rimuru is that he is an adult man who had a normal life but not too many strong connections when he was Satoru and then he died and was isekai'd into the world of Tensura. He quickly recognizes how broken his two powers are but also gets a reality check (meeting Veldora) that there are things much more broken than that. So he is extremely cautious. He is not a teenager looking to get laid, he doesn't want to become the world's strongest, has no goal to beat any evil demon lord and isn't yearning to go back home. He just wants to enjoy life and get to enjoy the things he misses from his old life (which his primary motivator for looking for Japanese otherworlders). His two main canonical heroic features are that he: (1) has a hard time refusing to help someone who ASKS HIM for help & (2) Cares about his subordinates and friends. He also also largely a generous person so long as it doesn't cost him much. It is these traits that have him help Veldora, the goblins, the ogres, the orcs, the dryads, the adventuring trio, Blumund, etc. The LN shows that he cautiously plans before taking actions and rarely goes rushing into a fight, he is also initially wary of the ogres and doesn't want to risk giving any of his subordinates powers that can beat him (this is why in the WN and VN, he doesn't evolve Shion into a Demon Lord when he evolves Benimaru as he was worried about what the ultimate skill version of Cook could do). He also cares little about ho many he kills, but at the same time has no desire to kill people just for the heck of it. People make a big deal of the 20000 humans he killed, but in the orc disaster battle he had his subordinates kill over 25000 orcs. He had a soft spot for humans because he saw himself as one and blames his selfish desire to enjoy his time at the academy for the death of 100 of his subordinates. This and Shion's death make him acknowledge that he is not a human, he is a monster. The massacre of the Falmuth army wasn't driven purely by revenge. It was his pragmatic mind deciding that this was the best solution to save his subordinates. If the soul harvest would have required the death of the entirety of Falmuth, there was a chance he would have done that as well. But it didn't so only the army had to die. And since they were slated to die anyway, he decided to take this chance to vent and make a production out of it.

Pretty much any of the anime that i REALLY enjoy, like slime, COTE, mushoku tensei, so i'm a spider, toradora, and ascendance of a bookworm, i end up reading the novels for, although i haven't finished any of them yet lmao
I prefer the anime version, honestly. For all that it’s less graphic it evokes a sense of tragedy and triumph at the same time. It’s just more poetic and meaningful, imo.
