I cannot even begin to say how special this movie has been to me from the day I saw not only saw it in theaters, but even seeing the commercials for it going forward. I was the most perfect age, juuuuuust old enough to totally understand it, but just young enough to still wish it was true, stare at the night sky and hope to see something, etc. (9 years old in '77). It has touched me in precisely the intended way, and I've just had to come to accept that most people just can't get it. People like you and I are like Roy and Larry jumping off the helicopter together. We get it.
Anyway, I am a sucker for any and all film analysis about CE3K I can find, to better understand why this movie is so powerful. And your take is EXTREMELY good, something fresh and new I've not heard before. The instant you said Roy’s job is a lineman, which "connects people", man, a lightbulb went off. So true!! Connections is core to this story.
It seems to me, the aliens were (among other things) telepathic and in tune with the higher more beautiful levels of thought. And what I especially liked about them is they weren't "like star trek’s vulcans" that Hollywood likes to convey the idea that intellect is the opposite of emotion; these aliens were VERY child-like, they literally were like kids having fun, but very very smart kids, who had a real mission and discipline, but were joyful about it.
So, their greatest interest was to find the burgeoning, exceptional telepathic humans, ones in tune with their dreamer inner child, hopeful, curious, unafraid, trusting. You'll notice the ones that the aliens "selected" to infuse with the message (to meet at Devil’s Tower for their "departure party") all ran towards the ships, not away from. The aliens were great at identifying who was ones "they could connect with", and as unfair as it seems, to them, not all humans were alike. It's like they arrived conveniently exactly when humans were at a crossroads in our evolution towards either one that separated us from each other or connected us more.
Anyway, I could ramble about this movie for hours and hours, as I'm sure you could too. I enjoyed your observations a lot!
    We are not alone, brother!✌

I went and seen this movie with my mom at the movie theater when I was five years old. I'm 51 now and like all things I struggle to hold on to the early memories my mind not as sharp as it used to be.life sure has a way of taking away the things that make you who you are I lost my mom four years ago she was my best friend and hero she had cancer and she fought harder than I've ever seen someone fight.my mom was strong far stronger than I am since she has been gone I've completely falling apart my health has done a nose dive . I spend lots of time trying to remember the beautiful life my mom gave me growing up I was always going to the movie theater with her seeing the greats first hand star wars jaws E T just to name a few . But it was my mom always wanting to give me a special moment she didn't care for aliens or sharks or the Jedi she only cared about having fun with me thank you momma my heart is broken without you but the memories you gave me I have and treasure I love you momma

What a great analysis of this movie. I agree, people balk at the kiss between Dreyfus and Melinda Dillon but to me, it's not about lust, it's that they've had a shared experience of something very powerful. I also disagree with so many people who say the aliens are using mind control. They aren't. They are received by those who are OPEN to hearing their signal. This deep, spiritual connection is what drives those particular people to the mountain.Once they've had this experience they are changed forever. Maybe others will have this experience too - just not yet.

I didn't like the "Special Edition" cut because Spielberg cut the scene of Richard Dreyfuss building the tower out of trash in his living room

I agree. Taking that scene out took me out of the special edition as well. Still good but lacked the power of the theatrical, imo.

Hello my dear brother in cinema and in creation! Your insights reflect deeply into our collective faith as sentient beings. That is why your reviews are the TRUEST on the net. They are always keeping in mind the underlying cohesivity of the Universe: G-D...
If I may ask: If you feel up to it, could you please do a review (probably multiple parts) of Andrei Tarkovsky's masterpiece Solaris? Or any film by him? There's a great line in Solaris the book (and movie) to inspire you: “We have no need of other worlds. We need mirrors. We don't know what to do with other worlds. A single world, our own, suffices us; but we can't accept it for what it is.”
    ― Stanisław Lem, Solaris

Good morning, brother Jonathan. Really appreciate this comment; builds me up to do more of these. I have Solaris in my DVD collection. I've seen it a couple of times but I will do so again as well as read the script for a video. I've not seen Tartovsky's film Stalker yet, though I've heard nothing but good things about it. Pretty deep line from Solaris. I'm in the process of harmonizing the spiritual and and tangible worlds; my expectations and what is for what it is. A lot to think about in that excerpt. I'm going to be posting 2001: A Space Odyssey soon, btw.
      Much appreciate the support!!

Can't believe I didn't thank you sooner for watching this video, Bev. Greatly appreciated! This I never got when I was "young." Now that I am more mature, I can really appreciate that thought that the writers and director put into it. Still among my all-time favorite Spielberg films. He's truly one of Hollywood's bright lights.

@@godfatherofcinema Well of course THAT is so true of many great films that perhaps benefit from a little maturity and life experience … I think we can sometimes be a bit facetious and dismissive when we’re young, I know I certainly was at times!

Maturity is underrated. Back then, couldn't have imagined myself watching--and loving--anything like Bergman, Fellini or any film without Sylvester Stallone or Arnold Schwarzenegger. Maturity is a gift, not a given.
