    My hot take is that corporate executives in the gaming industry are quick to write off a game as a failure (and I think it’s totally intentional) if it doesn’t sell say 2 million copies in the first month.
    They do this so they can use ‘creative’ (re: dishonest) accounting to justify underpaying or (just laying off) the developers, after a product is finished and released, while the execs pocket all the profits.
    A good game can have steady sales for months, ultimately more than making back its budget, but the powers that be don’t want to talk about that, and the gaming media is too often complicit in going along with this dishonest narrative.

    I think the 2 biggest reasons games like these "fail" are 1. They take way too long to come out. Like who today cares about Beyond Good and Evil 2 today in 2024 who didn't already like it when the first game came out in 2003? and 2. The games change so much that they may as well be a new IP. If you played Sand of Time as your first PoP game, are you really wanting a 2d Metriodvania game for the series first new game in over a decade?

      Even less than that to be frank. More and more AAA games are slashing their prices after only 6 to 8 weeks, sometimes even less than that. Unless you're a content creator, or someone else who really needs that day one experience, there's really not a point to shelling out day one anymore. Also frankly there's a boat load of games I've been hyped about and then day one it turns out there's a *huge* turn off for me to actually invest in them.

    • @RippahRooJizah
      @RippahRooJizah Месяц назад +2

      @@TheKgr320 Generally speaking if it's a game I believe in, I'll pay full price for it (and this has very rarely turned out poorly for me). Plus, some games would benefit an earlier purchase. One example, don't be the guy who decides to wait a year before buying a fighting game on sale, then going online and getting mad that the people online seem to, oddly enough... know how to play the game. Another example, spoiler risks, because sometimes you have to be extra careful to not get spoiled by a game on accident just looking around on YT.
      Then there's also the preorder stuff. I know a lot of people say to never preorder, and all I can say is I've seemed to have had far better experiences than most pertaining to preorders.

    • @duhmzdaih
      @duhmzdaih Месяц назад

      @@RippahRooJizah Well, about the fighting games, you can be the guy that waits a year before buying and then doesn't get mad at something that's easy to expect. Just take your time to learn the game before going online. When it comes to content, most fighting games nowadays are A JOKE in day one in comparison to the classic titles. Besides, characters are nerfed, patched, rebalanced, etc. anyway all the time in online games. About spoilers, I think this only has happened to me once, being spoiled on accident, so it's not a big deal.

  • @kevinclapson
    @kevinclapson Месяц назад +9

    Some of these did it to themselves.
    PoP dropping as a Metroidvania at full price was a huge gamble, one that doesn't seem to be paying off.
    Chrono Cross wasn't billed as a Chrono Trigger sequel, in fact the only indication it may be as much was it's name. It also got some flack for how the games titular mechanic (the Chrono Cross) worked and how poorly implemented the mechanic was.
    FF7 Rebirth got what it deserved. SE dangled people for years with the promise of FF7 remade from the ground up with Advent Children visual assets. What they delivered was a 3rd person hack'n'slash hybrid full of retcons and a ton of filler content. With the added bonus of SE milking this cow for all its worth by breaking the remake into chapters, all full priced titles, and spread out over several years. Even people who liked what they did with FF7R are waiting for the project to be complete before they keep throwing money at it.

    Honestly, I have an answer for every one of those games. But the ones that stood out: Chrono Cross: I rented it and frankly hated the changes they made, so I never bought. FF 7 remake: Avoided. I didn't enjoy FF7 to the extent everyone else seemed to, and it felt overhyped to me, so pass. Prince of Persia: I want to get it, but on PC it went exclusive to Epic. Hard pass until it releases elsewhere on PC (Which is my gaming console of choice these days, given up on consoles). Mirror's Edge sequel? Sure, but only if it ditched combat... oh, they doubled down on gun-play? Hard pass.

    Chrono Cross deserves the loss. It's a prime example of pumping resources into areas that don't make sense(only 5 or 6 of the 45 playable characters are in any way important to the overall story) and using the good reputation of another title to get more anticipation and praise than actually deserved. The only connection between the 2 games was a late-game reveal that nothing seemed to be working towards, so it came entirely out of left field. People are still clamoring for a proper sequel to Chrono Trigger because Chrono Cross wasn't one.

      I absolutely HATE it when sequels do things like that, but it was the only way the could stick 'Chrono' into the title and make Cross 'fit' with the other game, since it wasn't originally designed to be a sequel to Trigger.

    A recent game to add to this list is the Dead Space Remake. Everybody was so hyped when it was announced (supposedly), followed every dev blog & stream, community events, etc. But it only sold 2M copies. It was expected to sell 5M. Granted, it wasn't a huge failure due to the smaller budget, but it's a perfect example of how nostalgia has its limits. Not only is the original Dead Space (2008) still playable, but the target audience for the remake has moved on/aged out of gaming. Younger gamers don't care about DS, or other aging IPs, and the lack of sales proved this.

    The trouble with waiting 10-20 years to make a new game in a series is that your primary fanbase grows up. People who loved your games now have multiple jobs, spouses, pets, kids, and/or a home to care for. They just don’t have the time or money to play new (especially full priced) title. They don’t want to spend two weeks of their kid’s lunch money on a game that they can only play for an hour on Saturday nights after the kids go to bed especially if that’s the only real time they can spend with their spouse. Young players don’t want to play them when they are marketed as sequels to games they’ve never heard of and there are 100 games their favorite streamers and all their friends are already playing. The game studios write them off as failures but it’s the studio’s failure.

      To be honest it’s mixed. The leveling itself is super easy especially in a few spots… the catch comes down to 2 things.
      1) You cannot get the full roster of characters in one play through. There is an A and B route in the game that is pure RNG from what I remember,… and there are certain characters that are either or.
      2) Some of the characters are really unbalanced compared to others (like in Suikoden) so they can be a pain to level in certain areas.. because they suck (in combat, for some reason with the exception of 3 characters like Mojo most of the really cool characters were the worst in combat.)

    I will give you a hint at to why Viewtiful Joe 2 might have sold abismally.
    There was a Playstation Underground disc released with a demo of The Getaway as it's primary game of interest. However, among those demos featured was none other than, you guessed it, Viewtiful Joe 2. Now, at the time, I fell victim to a bug on the demo disc that was embedded in the Viewtiful Joe 2 game demos file. What it did was atrocious and it still makes me sick to this day. The bug was that if you played the demo of VJ2, it would delete your ENTIRE memory card(s) save data that was inserted into your PS2. I was notified of this bug after a couple of weeks by playstation via mail at the time. Way after it was too late and i was left wondering what the hell happened. So needless to say, even though it was not VJ2s fault per say, it left a bad taste in my mouth and I'm sure a lot of other people's at the time as well.

    Square had a guaranteed way to print money for FF7R. All they had to do was leave the script alone, and only update the graphics/gameplay.

      @Pulmonox Месяц назад +3

      Chrono Cross might be a great game, but there will always be a stigma in my heart for it because it completely erased everything you worked for in Chrono Trigger on account of the game not initially intended to BE a sequel to Chrono Trigger but they wanted some kind of name recognition, but the only way they could adapt the story is to completely nullify the story of the previous game, and when a sequel does that it is ALWAYS a pet peeve of mine.

      The problem with FF7 remake/rebirth isn't the story, maybe it plays a small part but the fact is that their biggest market(Japan) isn't as invested in the ps5 as the US so of course they would lose money making it a only ps5 game.

    • @hosswik
      @hosswik 18 дней назад

      @WhitebeardisKing Them limiting it to PS5 did limit sells and some people were upset about the story…. But if you look at the reviews most of the complaints were about the lackluster combat.
      Same thing happened with FF16, Action RPG’s can, and often are good… but they missed the mark with both FF7R games and FF16, by opting for watered down uninspired gameplay instead of playing it safe and using the traditional system.
      This is in my opinion, the primary reason why most fans are waiting for it to have a good sale before buying.

    • @WhitebeardisKing
      @WhitebeardisKing 18 дней назад +1

      @hosswik the biggest market for final fantasy is Japan and the fact they made both of the new games ps5 only destroyed the sells, personally I loved ff16 but I love most of the ff games except 9, sure the gameplay can kinda get repeative but what game doesn't? I mean I'd wager that alot of ff players also play things like cod or battlefield or halo.

    Outriders is an example of a game that felt like it did everything right, and still came up short. It felt like it had everything, addressed every concern, and answered every community question properly. Numerous Q&As, and they always said the right thing. If people wanted a feature or mechanic, it was probably in the game. Numerous modes and settings to address any gameplay concerns. Yet the game just did not sell well. The shooting and everything was probably a bit mid, or it didnt execute the gameplay loop to peoples satisfaction, or maybe it was too niche for what they were expecting in the mainstream when compared to other shooters. But it felt like everything else they did right, and if you looked at reception up to release, people couldnt wait. Then the game came out and it didnt pan out so well.

    A criticism that's missing, especially in regards to the Prince of Persia game, is that the large gaming companies have burned people too often. They generate hype/buzz/controversy about their games only for them to release them prematurely, bloated with mtxs, forcing them to always being online (even for single player games), with a lack-luster story, missing mechanics, or looking like a downgrade even against decade plus old games. This is why indie games are so popular right now, as well as their price-point, or why people seem to be playing older games. Why risk dropping $70 on a new game, assuming you didn't buy the $130 edition just to get "early" access, when you could instead go back and play an old favorite or work your way through your backlog of games you bought on sale on a whim.

    Add to the fact that getting a ps5 was rather difficult for a while.

    First, I did not expected any of these games. Second, I think the reason to Max payne 2 was a failure it is because people on the time was thrilled about games being multiplayer. Single player games already was oversaturated. In 2003 we had warcraft 3, cs and others action-filled games that were multiplayer. And single player was at the time "slow and steady" games.
