Especially in regards to The Dark Tower... Really? Did we adapt... literally anything from the series? Or did we just read the summary and think "Ehhh, an hour and a half will cover it."
I’ve had that Plume trade paperback of The Waste Lands for about 11 or 12 years now and I only noticed right before you said it in the video that that was a rose. My appreciation for that cover just skyrocketed.
My biggest critique of artworks with characters on them is the way they show faces. I think it ruins the readers perception or even expectation of how a character looks. My "advice" to cover artists/designers is to find a way to hide a characters face for that very reason. With that being said I apsolutely love the artwork of the final book, it's just so detailed and badass.
I don't have too much trouble disconnecting the characters on the book covers and in the pages, but I totally see what you mean. I think generally, it shouldn't be done, but with artists as brilliant as Michael Whelan I love seeing what HE sees when he reads a book
One of my biggest pet peeves is when the artwork on the cover shows a character… and the character’s cover appearance doesn’t match the textual description in the book itself. It’s a surprisingly common phenomenon, and it never ceases to irritate.
The one exception to this rule, I would say, are the Discworld covers. Whoever they got to do those just made everyone look so grotesque that you can't possibly connect them to the story. It's great.
The Wastelands cover with the skull train is pretty amazing. That image sticks with you. ngl. That's the cover that pops in my head when people mention the Dark Tower.
1:41 "I do not like the 'Dark Tower' sticker." **nervously eyes pallet of 10,000 mint, unopened 'Dark Tower' stickers, shrink-wrapped and awaiting package handlers to pick up order, bound for Man Carrying Thing HQ.**
Theres a cover of 'Wizard & Glass' that was left out. Its the original version to me cause i remember seeing it by suprise at a book store. Its s purple pinkish cover with a drawing of The Dark Tower in a pink ball in the center.
I love the Dave McKean cover for Wizard and Glass because I associate his weird artwork with the dustcovers from Neil Gaiman's Sandman comics, having to do with the archetype of a dream (of Dream hisself, thankee sai). I think it matches the vibe of the Thinny in its liminal, eroded space(time)
It sucks that the new Wolves cover spoils the appearance of the Wolves when it's played as a mystery within the book itself. I was lucky in that my library had the Susannah-throwing-plates one, which feels pretty iconic.
All the first edition covers are excellent. I love the 1st through 4th all of them are great. I own those versions except the very first one it’s way too expensive for me
I've got the 2017 Re-release of the series with all the covers that feature the Tower in some capacity & Roland appears on some of them (1,3,5 & 7) - The spines combined create an image 😏 Plus, they all have the Dark Tower Movie sticker😑
As soon as the original "Wizard and Glass" cover came up, I knew it had to be Dave McKean, who did all the covers for Neil Gaiman's "Sandman" comics. A quick Google search confirmed it to be so.
just paint the characters as described. Roland is tall, slender and rugged, with faded blue eyes. The illustrations for the most part were such a great addition to the books.
My first exposure to this series was seeing the new editions of books 1-4 and the first editions of 5-7 on my older sister's bookshelf as a kid. My young brain thought Roland on the new "Gunslinger" cover was dressed as The Undertaker and that Charlie for the new "Wastelands" was the epitome of Scary-AF. A while back, I found some Japanese book covers that make the whole series look like a manga, which was a real treat to discover. The original final book cover is still my favorite because it ultimately got me to read this life saving story : )
How many videos exist on RUclips? There’s an unnecessary construction of information. I’m not a computer my brain is overwhelmed. This video is not an unnecessary one (of course). Fred Rogers was right all along, honestly. It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood of RUclips.
The hodder and stoughton paperbacks have great artwork but all of them have the dreaded movie sticker I bought those editions for the cover art but now I regret it because the spines fold easily unlike Scribners paperbacks and not to mention the unpeelable stickers covering the amazing artwork
At least most of these have something to do with the actual content of the books. My german versions have the most random black and white images of 'gritty' landscape as the covers. The only 'cool' thing is that they added some kind of metallic shiny effect..whatever. I'd take the covers in the video any day.
While I like the ideas behind many of the modern covers, the more realistic style gives an unintended "thrown together in photoshop" kind of look that I'm not a fan of. Also, I feel that the way the modern cover portrays Blaine the Mono is a bit too goofy for its own good. I feel like there are better ways to make a train spooky than just giving it a skull face. Reminds me a bit too much of something a Goosebumps book would do.
Wizard and Glass really threw me off when I first read it. The pacing change after The Wastelands felt awful, but once I finished it, it became my favorite of the seven by far!
There is absolutely nothing worse than “Now a major motion picture!”
I heartily agree!
Specially when the adaptation doesnt do justice to the original book or is a pretty loose adaptation.
Especially in regards to The Dark Tower...
Really? Did we adapt... literally anything from the series? Or did we just read the summary and think "Ehhh, an hour and a half will cover it."
Ehh, I feel like the 'Now a Netflix Original' on the cover of my copy of Annihilation is worse.

It took me so long to notice too, and now I love it haha

Absolutely agree with this. It's also why I never appreciate movie adaptations of books I've read even if the movies are good

I love it even though it is so removed from the book...sometimes having something weird and stylish is really awesome on a cover
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO MORE OF THESE BOOK COVER VIDEOS I LOVE THEM SO MUCH
Haha thanks! I honestly love doing these they are really fun to make

Your recreation of the grin of Drawing of the Three killed me 😂😂😂
acting skill 100%

Yeah as badass as the cover is I hate that it spoiled the lightsabers
That grinning face from The Drawing of the Three is Jack Mort who pushed Jake.
The smiling character on The Drawing of the Three is actually Jack Mort (The Pusher)

Completely unrelated comment:
What's the music playing at 0:46? Is that an actual NES track or a newer FamiTracker (et al.) one?
My favorites are the 2011 ed. Hodder UK paperbacks - so colorful!

Those ones are cool! Yeah...I don't think anyone likes having that movie sticker on their books
@@ManCarryingThing Agreed, enjoy Wizard & Glass.👍
And don't worry, I'll catch up with you on the way to the tower😆 (I'm a slow reader)

Have a look at the brazilian covers. Nice and different concept.
No, just no.
All the interior book illustrations in Dark Tower follow a pattern: Odd numbered books are realistic art, Even numbered are abstract art.

Another awesome video! Would love to see you rate Lord of the Rings covers!
Thank you! Me too!
The Stand sits, always watching...
i'm starting to think.......maybe its time to read the stand
@@ManCarryingThing you won't regret it.

Love this video! I think my favorites are the latest covers!
those covers are wondrous
Did you finish the series and are you going to do video reviews for the final books?
Spooky Train Yes
spooky train go choo choo
Clive Barker's Books of Blood series has some fantastic covers, and would be a great subject for a video.
Great discussion of the cover art. Fun!
Thank you!

New fan, just womdering why ya never finished your review of the last 2 books.
So. What are the plot of the books? I’m super curious
WAIT...I thought you didn't use number rating systems? 🤔

I love the modern covers of the series and the gunslinger original cover and wolves of the calla cover

I really don’t read, but i do look at book covers…thnx.
Why spoil the look of the Wolves on the cover? Smh.
Dark tower made me sleepy after like the third book
I think the original Wizard And Glass cover is badass. It’s all gritty and the face is kinda gross. I’d legit by a shirt with that cover on it.
Man the carry thing👍
📚👍🏾📚👍🏾📚👍🏾📚👍🏾📚
that looks like the train from zelda: spirit tracks
the first one shown
How can sit there and say the modern Wizard and Glass cover is better than the original? Lol
You have bad cover tastes
i know
