I’d met Barris, hung out with him at his shop in North Hollywood, and have known people who had worked with him or purchased cars from him. Knowing what I know, to call George a “character” in the SoCal rod and custom scene would be putting it very politely. Thanks for the video. That car is definitely more show than go.
Streamlined body? Coffin shape is right. There’s so much wrong with the design of this car to attempt a land speed record. I don’t think they were serious about it.
I doubt this car ever actually ran to set any land speed records. But there is no denying the outrageous design turned reality by George Barris turned plenty of heads! It's kind of surprising that I couldn't find any diecasts with a quick Google Search. And while something like this would have been right up AMT's alley for a 1/25th scale model kit; I suspect tooling costs was a major restriction, not to mention that a Snake Pit kit wouldn't fit in the standard, 1/25th scale model car box. I guess this one's a project for the scratch builders and 3D Printers . . . . One curious feature that stands out is the dual shift levers. Even with two transmissions, I suspect one shift lever would be sufficient. But the picture at 0:45 compared to the other photos suggests that the car may be converted from left to right hand drive, and the "second shift lever" is there to support this feature. And the picture at 0:45 isn't 'reversed;' the "Good Year" tire script proves this.) Thanks for doing the research and posting this! 66th Like.
Thank you. I'm actually surprised they put so many engines in it. When working sometimes I don't notice some of the details, but after reading the comments, I come to believe it has been rebuilt, refinished, or undergoing a restoration.
Fact: The front end of the Falcon was designed to lock onto a shipping container which is also why the cockpit is placed to one side. It is a Correllian freighter remember?
Dan Woods (who built this car) would take a stock Crager center and join it to a custom widened rim. He made a multitude of these rims in the early 70s.
The car was built by Show Cars International, then acquired by Barris (who stuck his name on it and changed things a bit) then resold it to Jay Ohberg who also put his name to it and made a few changes...and that's how the show car world works. Lots of egos involved.
Barris built show cars, not full race cars. How much a car goes for depends a lot on who is bidding on it. I’m sure George didn’t loose money on this car.
Would you want to go over parking lot speeds sitting ON that thing with that steering wheel going straight vertical between your legs? I don't see ANY part of that car that is functional for anything other than show.
As with most of the creations that Barris put his name to, there's a lot of BS showman talk. This thing was only ever intended for the show circuit. Neither Barris nor Jay Ohberg had anything to do with the construction. Joe Bailon and Dan Woods were the actual constructors (Working at California Show Cars) and it was created as a static display even if theoretically capable of running.
OK, this video just got worse and worse the more it progressed. What on Earth did the AI mean by, “…described its engine room as, ‘96 valves to be synchronized’…”? AI-generated trash. Welcome to my, “Do Not Recommend Channel” list.
Very cool!!!!!!
48 spark plugs firing in unison? Well there's your problem.
"A.I." narrator=classically lazy video with little to no substance

Yeah, I get the feeling he’s more King of Hype, than King of Kustoms. Still, that’s really cool you hung out with him at his shop to boot!
@@mattskustomkreations Well, there are stories out there. I can tell you that much.
🙋♂️🤗THANKS RETRO FOR SHARING THIS 😎💚💚💚
This looks like something that would be in the TV series The Munsters 🧛♀️. You remember the Dragula 🏎? That was a cool car. This is also eye candy 🍬.
Insane.

I think they just went to the wrong designer.
George Barris was such a prolific designer! It boggles the mind! This is a beauty, but outperforms it's practicality. Bummer!
Barris didn't design squat. He put his crest on a lot of cars built and designed by others. Tom Daniels designed most of in-house commissions.

When California Show Cars sold it to Barris he changed some things on it so could claim build credit. Then he sold it to Ohberg who did the same.
Great concept!
Got another fan 🤩
That's SICK !
It's good enough for a trade show.
Thanks! Not sure if I ever heard of this one! (wonder if they made a model of this...looks like one that they would consider)
Barris was an artist without any clue of practical design.
Wow, and where is the tank filling connection ?
It's right behind the engines and just in front of the rear wheels. You can see the filler caps on both sides of the vehicle.
It's more of a hose, to connect to the tank trailer....
Did this inspire Ralph McQuarrie & George Lucas two years later? Similar front end to the Millenium Falcoln.
Yeah, yeah. I agree with you, the front end is very similar. You surprised me.
Fact: The front end of the Falcon was designed to lock onto a shipping container which is also why the cockpit is placed to one side. It is a Correllian freighter remember?
Brilliantly different.
Is this machine still in the UK?
I don't know, unfortunately.
Did I miss the spec of the radiators ?
Or the non-existent fuel tank to feed all those engines?
2 seats so when your land speed record braking you can swing your arm around the seat and say "hay babe, how you doin?" Wow chicka wow wow!
Anything goes..in the 60's and in the 70's..😮 😝
Inreality, that car can become a boat.
I just wanna know where he found Cragar SS Mags that deep!
Made to order by Cragar

Snake Pit..aka Money Pit
Purely redikulious
Replying to @BigDogRidgeBack:

Most awesome hot rod ever made.
Im so glad barris used ford engines in most of his projects, at least theres not good engines sitting there rotting away😂😂😂
750 but it won’t move, nice
1:49 how much?
It is almost more suited for tractor pulling.
the first car you showed is different than the second car.. Why is that ??
I am only using material that is available in articles about this car.

Love these videos. But Indiana Jones would not like it (Snakes. Why did it have to be Snake Pit?")
Hot wheels show make a car out of this car🤗
300 mph and no roll bar.
Sounds like it's worth more in parts,,32 k the last time it sold,,yep worth more in parts
Barris built awesome show cars, not true race cars.
"Land speed car " is PR, nothing more.
Strictly show. No way that thing would perform or have the durability for speed record runs.
Would you want to go over parking lot speeds sitting ON that thing with that steering wheel going straight vertical between your legs? I don't see ANY part of that car that is functional for anything other than show.
@@bigbossimmotal You would certainly rack up the kudos.
As functional as an orange county chopper.
Money pit
Um. ... Let's put it this way: ... It'd be damn hard to build something stupider!
0-60?
We'll let you know when it happens.
Not unless you drop it from a great height ;)
Pfft, buncha kids here...

Hideous and about as aerodynamic as a sideways brick and insanely heavy. Barris cars are pretty but non-functional junk for the better part.
Wow. The AI-generated voice stumbled big time with its attempt at saying, “$32,526”. So, Retro Car, how many Rs in ‘strawberry’?
K
The video doesn't make it clear; can this vehicle move and be driven under its own power or not?
just for show. never ran.
A terrible monster!
This car is a ... (rhymes with Yank).
Tank

Your problem is that it's a Ford
It’s a joke
