I used to write a customised cover letter for every job years ago, now I have just been using my resume only. I've had the same amount of success with both but I'm keen to try your method in this video for a job I am so excited for. Thanks for your content, I love the delivery 😊
I was actually blushing when she read the example of the generic cover letter because as a former administrative assistant I wrote dozens like that. And here I thought I was being original (or at least professional). While I did get hired from such an example I appreciate the better ways! Much better formula. The why is so important! 💚
I write a cover letter for each job I apply for. The major problem is that it takes many hours to craft a cover letter. This significantly reduces the number of jobs you can apply to.
I have been a hiring manager for years and hated reading them and bypassed reading them even. I wanted the experience on the resume. Granted I’d glance at them, but they were always so regurgitated so worthless. This approach would have made ALL the difference.
As for myself, I rarely wrote one and if it did it was bullet points for readability. Aaaannnnnddddd I’d go rogue and spice it up with personality and that actually worked… especially when the description was hilarious. I actually got an interview (and job) for identifying as an email/digital marketing unicorn and that I produce glitter….. (At this time I was desperate hence why I said that)… Punchline? It was an investment / insurance / annuity company…… Personality matters, especially if you know the audience. Again, that was a Hail Mary, but I adore humor as a hiring manager given the culture of my marketing team. So exercise with caution. But those who applied and had some spice made them memorable
Side note: (AND I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH). If you are applying for a design job, ALWAYS INCLUDE PORTFOLIO WORK! Even if just pasted into the resume…ESPECIALLY when the description says “must include portfolio.” I cannot tell you how many people I rejected bc they included “portfolio upon request.” Uh…: I did in the description. Tells me that you didn’t fully read description. And back in the day that was okay, but technology advancements make it easy. You MAY think it’s a way to bait into an interview, but it’s a waste of my time (and HR’s) to request…. Rarely won’t give you an interview unless your previous work experience was lights out. HR would call those and say you have x-amount of time to send…again, if you were perfectly aligned. That happened 3x out of 500 applicants. Others may have made it, but it was about following directions. I repeat, pasting your graphics with a brief explanation of what was going on is PERFECTLY FINE…. Not everyone can churn a website overnight. To be honest, the three or four who DID paste their work into the original resume caught my attention more. Now the ATS systems would probably vomit on those nowadays, but if you don’t have a website and can’t upload additional documents, email the document with graphics to HR explaining you attempted to upload but experienced and error and if there is another way (non website) to submit your work. This also comes in handy if your previous employer doesn’t want you to publish the work you did for them on the web. IYKYK.

Often. I have been writing cover letters more frequently to get practice into writing cover letters. I can remember back in my second year of college; I had no idea how to write a cover letter. I was never taught how to in high school. I knew how to write a resume, but my resume was very outdated. It wasn't until I started to follow your channel that I began to understand how to form great quality resumes and cover letters. Now after only a year of watching your videos, I help my friends and coworkers form their cover letters and resumes. Every time that I have helped them, they always get the job. hi, sometimes I have throubled in writing a cover letter depending on the job application. For example if you want to change the career path without no experience.
OK, it's been about a week as your subscriber, and I learned A LOT! Also recommended your videos to some friends. Certainly found many things that I've done wrong, incl. often not writing cover letters at all (bad experience from years ago, when even when applying for a perfect-fit position with perfect resume & cover letter led to nothing). Weird thing is, last several weeks I decided to give it a shot, applying for some job offers after years of freelancing (again, sending no cover letter - that was before finding your channel). And... received several phone calls invitations for an interview literally on the next day, but I consider this only to the combined effect of shortage of IT staff, especially people with long-year experience both on the technical and business side. Anyway, so far I find your channel a gold mine for useful information, and will continue watching your new and older content to further improve my knowledge.
I always write cover letters when applying for a job. I'm learning to perfect it. I don't have a generic cover letter, I did in the past, but I learned that heavily tailored cover letters get the interview. Right now I am writing a letter of interest. Is there a specific length that I should stick to when it comes to letters of interest? I only use one page when I write cover letters, but I have two pages in the letter of interest.
@SelfMadeMillennial Thank you for sharing this information, very useful. Can you please give me some advice, what you would recommend to write in the cover letter about the time when I have been stay-at home-mom?
I found multiple recruiters for the company I'm applying to and I'm unsure who to address. Should I use 'Jon Doe and the recruitment team' or just address the cover letter to the "company name recruitment team"?
Hi Madeline! I have an urgent question. I am applying for two different yet similar roles at two different branches of an MNC. Am I required to sent two different cover letters speaking to that particular team and resumes with some small personalized tweaks for each of these roles?
Hi, Your videos have been very helpful. I have been unemployed 9 months, I have applied to 100 jobs and have had 18 interviews with about 8 companies. I have about 2 years of experience after college. I'm starting to get nervous about this hurting my chances. Any advice? What metrics are average for corporate job search?
Keep at it! I'm in a similar situation as you right now. It can definitely take a long time, I've heard 6+ months of active job searching is not uncommon. Just make sure your application materials and interview skills are getting better with each job you apply to. You might try finding less competitive positions that you're qualified for. Such as local businesses and smaller companies. You'll find something :)
So I'm having an issue with starting of the sentence stating my title. What if you don't have a lot of work experience in what you're applying for (because you've been working in unrelated fields), but went to school and have a degree that's closer to what you want to do/what you're applying for? What title would I then use and what do I insert for the years of experience I have, or do I skip giving myself a title and noting the experience (I don't have in the workforce) altogether? I'm shifting industries and finding it difficult to get a good bead on what my CV should look like, though I am giving your CV format a go.
I have a probably rather uncommon question. I have survived childhood abuse, which lasted up to adulthood and combined with health problems led me out of the job market for a long period of time. So far, I have basically written lies on my resume for the first ten years of my supposed work life. I want to start being honest but the best I could do so far was not write anything about those years. Justifying it by the fact I used to supposedly work in marketing and sales and I'm currently in a completely different field. I'm looking to witch fields yet again, have enrolled into university and applying for some way up jobs and I really don't know if it's something I should talk about. Whether in my cover letter or my job interview.
Often and when I look for jobs, I get lots of interviews. I'm an engineer and I'm not a great writer, so it takes me time and I have my English savvy friends & family review it before I send it.
Just stumbled on your channel and all its goodness. Your genuine enthusiasm to help people in infectious...... ‘spammy‘ is a new word in my vocabulary. Do you have any advice for a 54 year old trying to execute a MAJOR career pivot? I am currently studying a Business degree majoring in HRM in Australia and am looking for an internship. I am super interested in training and development. Ideally I would like to use my teaching experience to specialise in that area. Any tips for us new-old ‘pivoters‘? :)
I have never written a cover letter. I barely needed a resume for my first job (it was food service related) I'm currently searching for my second job, as the first one shut down. I spent years at the first one, and I've learned that I do Not do well dealing with customers of any kind, so I'm trying to find a well paying job that doesn't deal much with people. The problem is that in order to get a job, every piece of advice boils down to "you basically need to sell yourself like a product, convince prospective employers to want You specifically." I'm not a people person. I'm not good at persuading people. I've already been unemployed longer than I'm comfortable with, and I can't stand the thought of going back to working behind a register where customers treat you like garbage and management expects you to take it with a smile. Basically the only way I'm going to get a good job is to get good at acting, and to lie like my life depends on it. Because in this economy, it does.
First, I always write cover letters. Secondly, on LinkedIn, a lot of the recruiters cannot be found. Thirdly, aren’t Cover Letters put through the ATS as well?
Can anyone suggest to me how I can fill the 11 years gap on my Cover letter? My Education and profession is Biotechnology / pharmaceutical and last time I worked 11 years back in my field, because of some personal and family reasons I needed a job that gives me freedom of time.
Hi Madeline, thanks for the awesome video. As always, big smile on my face at the end. 😂. Is it ever ok to tell a company they are the only company you want to work for?? 😬. I got into crypto and blockchain technology about a year ago, and I just looooove to learn about the industry, read books, take courses… But after doing some research, there is only one company I want to work for (the biggest US Crypto Exchange that’s starts with the C, lol). I have no desire or motivation to send my resume to other companies. Is it ok to let them know? 😬

You rock, lady!
Thanks for this
Thank you :)
often for sure!
I found exactly what I was looking for, thank youuuuu😘😘😘😘
I only write a cover letter if the job requires it or it’s a job I really want!
I have never written a cover letter. I barely needed a resume for my first job (it was food service related)
I'm currently searching for my second job, as the first one shut down. I spent years at the first one, and I've learned that I do Not do well dealing with customers of any kind, so I'm trying to find a well paying job that doesn't deal much with people.
The problem is that in order to get a job, every piece of advice boils down to "you basically need to sell yourself like a product, convince prospective employers to want You specifically."
I'm not a people person.
If you are applying internally and your company culture is to go by the first name..... do you address the hiring manager by their first name?
How do you do, thanks for teaching.

Brilliant and succinct!
First, I always write cover letters. Secondly, on LinkedIn, a lot of the recruiters cannot be found. Thirdly, aren’t Cover Letters put through the ATS as well?
I'm told they don't even get read anymore. Who knows?
I've seen info about having 4 sentence cover letters elsewhere
Often- as an esthetician, most of the employers in my area are small and local.

What about the call to action?
