It was his way of keeping track of how much money he could spend after bills, retirement savings, etc. He taught all of us to keep different envelopes with things like “groceries”, “gas”, etc. written on them and to put the money we needed to pay for those things into the envelopes so that we would know what we had left over after all responsibilities were covered.

Accurate. My stepdad (a white man who owned a small business) kept quite a bit of cash on hand at any given time. It was his way of keeping track of how much money he could spend after bills, retirement savings, etc. He taught all of us to keep different envelopes with things like “groceries”, “gas”, etc. written on them and to put the money we needed to pay for those things into the envelopes so that we would know what we had left over after all responsibilities were covered.
