Great movie. I saw it today, trying somehow to honor Paul Auster. The script is so good that you realize it was written by a master. And now having the chance to listen about the genesis of how Paul got involved in the film, about the original Christmas story, the creative process together with the movie director, the involvement of Robert Altman. Hell I love RUclips for having all this available just instantly. It is a complete pleasure and learning. Thank you!

This is a Gem. The Altman part is a stunning revelation. My favorite writer and one of my all-time favorite films.

He left us great books and films. That's what I tell myself when I feel sad that he's gone.

"Cinematic humanism". Describes Smoke perfectly. Roger Ebert treated Smoke very fairly check it out. I stumbled into viewing Smoke years later with zero expectations. At the end you're just blown away with Keitels' final scene...and then come the credits. Wow.

Writing scrips for silent movies is delightfully oxymoronic - Zen almost! Must've watched too much Kurosawa?

I love both Smoke and Blue in the Face which I saw when they came out. I haven’t seen Lulu on the Bridge. Sadly none of these films are easy to find nowadays. It’s a shame that the film d’auteur has given place to the Marvel comic heroes. Cinema now is dead.
