The numerous different forms of cancer posses certain common features
It is a disease characterized by excessive cell proliferation it generally result in tumor.
The tumor cells later, lose the appearance and function of the tissue cells from which they arise.
The tumor not only expands in size but also involves the surrounding cells and when nerve endings are affected pain is experienced.
The cancer cells detach themselves from the parent tumor , move to another location and new cancerous growth is established this is called Metastasis
A cancer cell that arises from mesodermal cells (which form bone, muscle, cartilage and related tissue) is called sarcoma
If it arises from endoderm cells which form intestinal system and its associated organs.
Cancer chemotherapy began in 1940 when stilbesterol phosphate was introduced for treating cancer of prostrate gland.
This is followed by use of nitrogen mustered in the treatment of malignant lymphomas.
The folic acid antagonists were use to treat childhood leukemia's.
Chemotherapeutic agents are used where tumor is inoperable or where metastasis occurs.
Surgery is preferred where tumor is well defined and assessable.
Radiotherapy is superior to chemotherapy as it effectively destroyed a tumor with minimum damage to surrounding normal tissue.
    Classification of Antineoplstic Agents:
    1) Alkylating Agents:
    Nitrogen mustards: Cyclophosphamide
    Alkyl Sulphonate: Busulfan
    2) Antimetabolites:
    Purine antagonist- Mercaptopurine
    Pyrimidine Antagonist- Fluorouracil (FU) 
    Folate Anatagonist- Methotrexate
    3) Vinca alkaloids- Vinblastin sulfate
    4) Antibiotics: Actinomycin D (Dactinomycin), Doxorubicin hydrochloride
    5) Misc.- Cisplatin 
