In your process when you are getting rid of all the midi data except the kick and then the snare, this might be helpful. Rather than using the mouse to try to get all the midi blocks, hitting shift+down arrow will select the blocks on the lowest note and shift+up arrow will select the highest. If the kick is the lowest, shift+down arrow will select all kick notes, then shift+I will invert the selection and select everything you want to delete. If the snare is in the middle, select the bottom row with shift+down arrow and delete the bottom row until the snare is the bottom and then delete the inverse (shift+I and Delete). If the snare is closer to the top, start from the top. It sounds complicated to describe in writing, but in reality it is really quick, easy and elegant. You won’t accidentally miss midi notes, it’s faster, and you don’t have to hear the obnoxious sound of manually selecting all the midi notes with the mouse. I’m a keyboard guy but I understand some people prefer the mouse, so it’s an option for folks who like keyboard shortcuts.
You can automatically separate out midi by notes, into sub tracks. Excited to give this a try. Have a ton of libraries from old programs that aren’t compatible any more.
Great video. I had 1 other thought on this. For the 3rd party or custom sample library or midi pack you want to use as the samples drummer will play, you could drag the drummer region down to a new track while holding shift+option. It will create a phantom or mimic region (not sure what the official name is) on the new track, which will follow the region it was dragged from (in this case the drummer track’s region. Basically the drummer track drives the region on the other track. Now if you have a sample library or midi pack with standard general midi drum assignments, then make it the instrument for the new track. Now mute the drummer track. The drummer track will drive the new track and drummers full performance will be played on the new track using the sounds from the 3rd party samples. Again, the samples have to be mapped to the general midi standard or the sample instruments will be mixed up. Somebody might find this helpful.
I used to do this with Drummer and BFD3. It’s a great feature, but I didn’t always get good results for some reason. It’s like the Drummer performance was intrinsically linked with the sound/mix of Drummer. Sounded odd when playing through BFD3 - wasn’t what I hoped for. But this approach of keeping the cymbals and only replacing the snr and kick might actually work better for me 😀 Great vid.
That was brilliant I’m absolutely new to logic ,am downloading the free trial of the latest version having just got a Mac (2015) with Monterey on it . I like the idea of using the Drummer track as it comes up with some great rhythms . Is it possible when turning drummer tracks to midi to put reverb on the midi drum track and Gate it? I like some of the 80s studio sounds like the Linn drum etc. Trying to come up with some 80s AOR grooves thinking guitarists and musicians like Steve lukather ,Michael Landau ,Dan Huff etc and the production around then . As you can imagine Being a total newb to this it’s going to take some work . I was wondering how I would deal with drums as I might want to add bongo ,conga triangle etc to some tunes (Miami vice style) . When I’m not thinking about 80s mega productionAOR /pop my main music is 80s sleaze , like guns n roses Bang tango, faster pussycat etc plus Aerosmith and the stones . Plus all the usual Ratt ,dokken ,van halen . Metal wise I like 80s thrash like sacred reich ,nuclear assualt, anthrax ,megadeth,Metallica ,stormtroopers of death , like lots of Scandinavian melodic death too like CHildren of bodom (my fave Metal metal band) wintersun, insomnium, sky fire etc. I used to live in Spalding lincs from 82 to 84 in a pub (now gone ) called the Royal Oak on cowbit rd have some excellent memories Had a few good friends from the Darley family it was smashing in the 80s and a quick bus ride to Peterborough where I also lived lots and had friends . Great video man thanks for sharing your knowledge

Just clicking the key of the row you want to keep and then invert selection by pressing shift + i would be even faster ;)

Let me know how you get on!

Great info. Thank you. I am already doing something similar, using junk samples to double drums. Very mean sounding.
