Teay spoilers, but not a aingle person in this game died for real, beceause the island is a "video game" so to speak, it didn't even happen for real, the only person in this game who died is Chiaki herself, who died before

To everyone saying she's not real or just lines of code:
She may be an artificial intelligence, but she's also self-aware. A simple computer program would only act within its programming, but she was able to go against that and make her own decisions. Namely by outing herself as the "traitor" (which she really wasn't. Monokuma probably just used that word to raise suspicions) and sacrificing herself to save everyone from Nagito's plan. You can't program something to go against its programming.
And when it seemed like there was no way out during the sixth trial, she managed to come back and restore Hajime's hope in himself and in the future. Would an AI that only existed to regulate the behavior and rehabilitation of this group be able to defy all expectations like that, even after she'd basically been killed? I highly doubt it. Maybe she started off as just lines of code, but she grew into something much more by the end. Like how Hajime was placed into the Neo World program as Iziru Kamakura, but he came out as someone else. Someone who incorporates the memories of both into himself and who will create his own future from now on.
To me, it seems like Chiaki may have even developed feelings for Hajime, which he probably reciprocated. Yes, they are my OTP, but it goes beyond just that. Look at her behavior in her free time events and in her Dangan island events. It's clear that she feels some kind of connection with him.
People are always so quick to say AI's aren't "real beings" and it bugs the hell out of me. To say she isn't real not only devalues everything she did for the group, but everything Alter Ego did for Makoto and his friends as well, since they were both created by Chihiro, the Ultimate Programmer. If they never revealed that Chiaki was an AI, would anyone have guessed that she was? Does it even matter anyway? Human or AI, she's the one who got everyone out of the NWP alive and filled with hope, even if it meant she couldn't come with them.
I don't think she's gone either. She's just laying dormant inside the program, and given what kind of technology we've seen exists in the Danganronpa world, it's possible they could find a way to bring her into the real world.
If she comes back in Danganronpa 3, I will be incredibly happy.
She definitely is not dead. Nobody actually died in DR2. You saw their consciousnesses functioning in some capacity at several points after they died. Even though it was just a glitch in the game, they clearly still exist.
True that. And, Usami literally returned to K.O. Junko in the final trial. How could she even remotely possibly do this, if she had been executed/totally gone, alongside Chiaki? It's also confirmed Usami is returning in DR3. So; if she is returning, again, how? It suggests that it is entirely possible Chiaki could have returned as well.
Also on the "Chiaki's just an AI" discussion. Well; what were Hajime and the others, at the start of the game? Avatars. In traditional games like MMOs player characters are called Avatars, however we are consciously separated from them. In the Neo World Program ... the Avatars are actually separated from the body...it seemed as though a direct copy of the brain's memory was taken and altered, and once everything is said and done, that copy of the brain is uploaded/replaces the existing body's brain.
In essence, it seems as though their bodies were not housing them at the time. Their bodies were husks without a conscious guiding it, not even "sleeping." So then, again, what were Hajime and the others? Avatars? Or...
They were all AI, of sorts. ALL of them had digital copies of their conscious sitting on hard disks/in memory. They simply had a physical body/host waiting for them to be re-uploaded into. Think about it. Junko was intending on editing/messing with this stuff, to get herself uploaded into their brains. If the graduation program was ran differently, *Chiaki herself* could be uploaded into (someone else's) body, instead.
So. Haha. EVERYONE was an AI!
I didn't even think about that last part, but you're totally right! It's essentially like editing an existing word document: open it, make whatever changes you want, delete or reword a paragraph, then save over what was there before. Like you said, their avatars are basically AI's. They're meant to acquire new, positive memories for Hajime and the group in this simulation of a tropical island environment. That's what the Future Foundation intended, at least.
But what's funny is that Junko's plan might actually be the key to bringing Chiaki back. AI Junko wanted to copy-paste herself into the brains of everyone who was comatose, plus she actually split herself into two separate entities during the events of Ultra Despair Girls, which is set before DR2. All of which suggests Chiaki could do the same, not with someone else's body of course. It's already established that they also have very advanced robotics in addition to AI in the Danganronpa-verse (like Monokuma), and they also have Mr. Ultimate Mechanic Kazuichi with them as well. Plus, since the Neo World Program was created with the help of the Ultimate Neurologist, I'm sure they have some very detailed notes around. It helps to have a full understanding of something you're replicating, especially if it's as complicated as the human brain.
With all this in mind, I'm certain they could create a body for her. Sure, having a mechanical body might take some getting used to, but she'd still be the same person that Hajime and the others knew.
With Usami confirmed for a reappearance, I really do hope they bring her back as well.

I would like argue against this. You are still consciously controlling your MMO avatar in a game when you play, you are only consciously separated from them when you stop playing. When you're not playing your MMO avatar cannot move or make decisions on its own. If it can then it isn't an avatar anymore, it is now an AI.
Therefore the avatars in the Neo World Program would not be considered AI, because they have to be controlled by the consciousness they belong too. Its like the Matrix.

This make zero sense at all. If they all had digital copies of their conscious sitting in hard disks/memory drives then why did Real Makoto confirm when an avatar gets deleted there is no way to recover and revive real life host body? If they simply had copies they surely would have more than one copy of their consciousness.

Their avatars cant basically be AI's. They explained it in game and it works similarly to how the Matrix works. The avatar in game is basically a virtual body that is synchronizing directly with the user's brain. Meaning if Hajime dies in the game, his consciousness dies too. You can make a million Chiaki AI's but there is only 1 Hajime consciousness. There are no copies of consciousness. Just like in the Matrix, there is only 1 Neo but there were a million Mr. Anderson AI's.

Gawd I LOVE this pairing! For multiple reasons really, for one their interactions with each other are SOOO CUTE, Secondly I really love how Hajime and Chiaki complement each other so well, Chiaki's the calm to Hajime's storm, when he's all worked up, she's able to calm him down, when he's stuck she's able to help him through it! While Hajime on the other hand is the sort of guide for Chiaki's naive nature, being able to look after her while still being able to teach her about the world. And every step of the way learning a little more about her as well.(Prolly part of the reason why i love Makoto x Aigis so much) And the cherry on top of this duo of sweetness, they look so GOD DAMN ADORABLE together, I swear it's enough to make any manly guy squeal like a fangirl! SHIP IS SOOOOOOOO GEEEEWD!!!!!

I haven't played any of the games, but have watched the anime trilogy of Danganronpa.
What happened to Chiaki, exactly?
Elodin to summarize, this Chiaki is an AI based on the real Chiaki. The real Chiaki died in the real world, and that’s what lead Izuru (Hajime) and the rest of class 77 to becoming Remnants of Despair. Class 77 was, at a much later point, put into the Neo World Program to undo the brainwashing, and this AI Chiaki and Monomi (Usami) were created as Observers to help them overcome the brainwashing. Later in the game, Chiaki and Monomi are executed by the virus infecting the Program, and the only way the survivors can escape the Program without letting the virus into the real world (through the dead bodies of the victims) is to erase the program, including the avatars of the survivors. They wouldn’t die, they’d just forget everything, including Chiaki (at the time, they believed Chiaki never existed in the real world), but through acceptance, perseverance, and plot convenience, they were able to escape and keep their memories (at the very least, Hajime kept his). Chiaki AI and the real Chiaki are dead, but not forgotten.
The best way to understand it, though, is to play Danganronpa 2. You won’t regret it.

Geez, this made me burst into tears. Chiaki talking about everyone going back to where they belonged, Hajime sensing her hand would disappear, ugh, so many feels!
Chiaki is possibly the most tragic character in the Danganronpa canon (and that's saying something); she died not once, but twice and was the only character in SDR2 to NOT get a chance at a new beginning. This is why I have chosen to view Extra Life by the Apocryphal_One canon over Kodaka's ending to SDR 2 and 3.
It hurts so much.... Because before surgery began, Hajime's last thought was Chiaki.... and when Chiaki was dying, her last words were "Let's play one last game Hajime!! I dont want to die"

small little story... ever since finishing Danganronpa 1, I immediately bought the sequel using my grandpa's credit card w/o his permission (worth it!) and as soon as the game began I fell in love with the pairing immediately. I thought "aw, the two of them'll survive together for sure." throughout the game I loved every moment they shared together. I wanted to see them beat monokuma and escape together.... I knew it wasn't to be, because I got so scared of what would happen to Chiaki, that I ended up spoiling myself and checked the internet on what would happen to her. as I was searching the wiki, I kept lying to myself that nothing would happen to her, that she wouldn't die, but there it was. the word I dreaded. "deceased." my body felt limp. Finding it was by execution didn't help. To this day I still haven't beaten the game. The reason? I'm on chapter 5.

I can't help but feel like this ending with Chiaki is just as sad as the other one, because she's still just a computer program, so if he left like that he'd have to learn it after he's left the simulation, while also still have his ultimate despair body DX that would be a lot to take in DX

For those who watched the anime, they know that she actually existed, and her death was the reason everyone fell in dispair.
and this was also the event to break Kamukura out of Junko's control - as it showed him that there was a force to combat despair, causing him conflict on which side is correct. This is why Hajime is able to fuse himself with Kamukura in the final battle - because Chiaki was willing to sacrifice herself AGAIN and returns to Hajime, pulling him away from despair, thus confirming that Hope is indeed the stronger force

It's REALLY inaccurate, sorry about that. I think i'll rewatch the endings one day. They're not that sad in general as much as i remember, but if you think deeper about some things they say about themselves or something else like that, it gets a bit sad.

A clue is when you play chihiro's fte, he says that "despite everything, a SOUL can never be re-created, as a programmer who's working on AI, I shouldnt say that, but I really think a soul can be reached to a medium and maybe re-create the person again in future, that's my aim"..... Chihiro won.... if you look at the anime at the end, Chiaki's soul was freed (or released) to another world after Hajime fulfilled her wish to get all her classmates together and be happy with hope.
BUT fucking Hajime is Ultimate everything...... So he should be Ultimate Alchemist too and bring her back for real!!!
Is Chiaki's "Hold it" voice clip a reference to Ace Attorney? It would make sense seeing as she is the Ultimate Gamer.

I mean... since the technology in the series is advanced enough to make AI's and to make high tech robots, there could be AI chiaki in a robot body. So that way she gets to go back to the real world with everyone else. If you think of it that way, this ending is not depressing at all.

Chiaki Nanami was a real person who was part of Hope's Peak Academy's 77th Class, as we see in Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak Academy Despair Chapter. It's a safe assumption that the student Chiaki was killed during The Tragedy as she does not become part of Ultimate Despair like her classmates and Izuru Kamukura. The Chiaki Nanami we see in-game is an AI based off of the student.
Geometry Roy I wasn't exactly aware that Chiaki was real 6 months ago. The anime just premiered last week, and information and art about Chiaki was among the last things teased.
