I absolutely hate grinding steel. Especially die grinding. Had those tiny splinters find there way past my dam glasses and into my eyes and still to today am getting odd bits out. If only there was another way.?
I’ve had a lot of success using small round burrs. They come in lots of sizes. I made a guide that fits at the end of the grinder and sits over the weld, that is, on the metal at the top, and bottom, without touching the weld itself. It guides the tool along the weld. I can tilt it down into the weld for depth control. It prevents the tool from jumping around. I use a diameter bit that fits the curve of the weld I want. 1/4”, 5/16”, 3/8”, or whatever.
It's a gypsy trick! Any master craftsman could do that with a sharp rock and make it look easy. The tool does not make the man but wow. You were great with the work and I would have like to have seen more of your finishing ideas.
Thanks Tommy Boy! LOL all jokes aside John is there representing his company but I always feel like he comes with some good solutions. Maybe he's just a good sales guy, but I'm buying. Thanks for the vids Bob, keep them coming.
Very interesting and perhaps even an education - gotta try it out! You push on a hacksaw, you push on a file (or draw it 'sideways' when you draw file) - but you never drag them towards you. It never crossed my mind to try pulling a carbide burr toward me. Absolutely going to try pulling a burr next time I get in the shop.
Important in tank and nozzles and shell repair and building. Many new guys don't know how to use these and I just learned some shit. Thanx for the video.
Thank God for that little time line cursor at the bottom of the video cause after Bob prompted this guy to move it along twice I knew we were in trouble! Made it through this video in about 4 mins.! And the only thing new to me was the Leather "W" shaped burr.
I understand the need for these infomercials. Everyone needs a paycheck. Only complaint is... The weld videos have gotten shorter an these commercials got longer.
Never seen those cartridge rolls before, but have used those burrs a lot. Often have thought about rigging up some kind of radius making guide for the die grinder so it's not so tedious.
So does the leather last noticeably longer that the tapers? Only ask coz I've not used either, I'm ore of a put a thicker layer of paint on it type of guy. But I appreciate true craftsmen who take time over their work.
I keep waiting for him to tell Bob that he's living in a van down by the river... Previous posters that said Tommy Boy are dead on. He's got to be related to Farley...GRHS
yeah john is trying to sale me his products, but you get beyond that there is a lot of good information and tips. To me get the details right people won't see the big mistake.
When I was a kid, my welder told me to never stop or start your welds on an inside corner joint. Not because of the integrity of the weld but the difficulty of making a repair if you can't do it properly. Lastly and most important, he said (in a long southern drawl) "fuck a bunch of grinding all day!" Texas Welders!
He said the tip of that burr was 1/4”, I think. Seemed a lot smaller, maybe 1/8”. That’s why it didn’t work too well. For that weld, a tip of 1/4” was needed, maybe 5/16”.
How about a video of welding corners like this with tig, had a hell of a time doing a bunch in aluminum recently. There's gotta be a better way than what I did
Hi, enjoyed the content learned a little drag don,t push ,set rpm, use variable speed ,However the final photos will require enlarging. I could barely see what had been achieved, and neither could anyone else.
Yeah man, I always grab for air first. I put a little swivel style regulator valve at the inlet of my die grinders and I get infinite speed control and maneuverability! But don't discount the electric version. I did a job for a customer at his facility who was dead set against me using air tools because the water and oil mist from the exhaust posed a contamination risk to the project. It was a big dollar job and I didn't argue with the man. I sure was happy I already had the electric equivalent of all my air tools on my truck. It would have been a waste of time and money if I had to stop and go buy an electric die grinder at that moment!
your air tools dont come with speed control? You control it by psi? That little circle on the side with the slit in the middle that looks like you could stick a dime or a flathead in it... give that a turn.
First weld, start in the corner and pull it out of the corner. 2nd weld, start at the side, pull it into and through the corner to the other side. No need to grind at all.
colton mayhew what exactly are the "type of welders" on his channel? I think there are plenty of different fields this applies for. Hard to imagine you know exactly who is watching his channel lol
@@CURTISR503 the content of the video, bringing the weld down, blending the edges, that's all good for everyone. The way hes acting, the way the whole video is portrayed that's the problem I have. I wasn't rude with what I said but I did mean it.
I'm not a fan He talks a lot but the finish doesn't do the walk. I bought one of those diamond wire wheels for removing mill scale a $120.00. It lasted about a hour, losing wires like crazy. I ran it slow and not much pressure. It worked well removing scale. But it cost about $25 a .
Well..... yeah! That's what all these videos are designed to do including the "instructional" videos. None of these channels are doing anything out of "the goodness of their hearts"! They're all shills, just some are a bit less obvious, like Mr. Tig and early Bob Moffat when he was just pushing Cowley College. The whole Internet is a shopping channel!
If you have a mold maker or anyone with long machine shop experience that handle tools like this or even “nicer” equipment. You’ll be more enlightened. Nice video.
yeah...almost any process for cutting Stainless is going to do that...these carbide burrs, and milling machines..and those 'chips'...never ever touch them with your bare fingers..
Anytime I’m doing something where I get tiny slivers, such as die grinding or milling, I use examination/surgical gloves. These will stop that, but will tear very easily if it gets caught on something. Far safer than cloth or leather gloves when rotating parts are present.
This is why the shop can't stop for a salesman's demo, they're generally quite unimpressive and repetitive. Good lord man, it's burring off 4" of weld. This would be the last time this salesman wasted my time.
Bob they better giving yall a lifetime supply of grinding disc's for this
I'm 71...and have never, ever heard anyone say..."I like to grind"....
Damn true
Doug Ankrum LOL
I absolutely hate grinding steel. Especially die grinding. Had those tiny splinters find there way past my dam glasses and into my eyes and still to today am getting odd bits out. If only there was another way.?
Only a grinder salesman would ever say that.
"No man... NO MAN. I reckon you get you ass kicked saying something like that."
Dude, this video should have been 5 minutes long. This salesman guy repeated himself a dozen times, hard to watch. But hey nice jackets !
still the most informative 20min carbide burr video I've seen yet.
So you dont cry, you watch useless TV for hours :D

that sounds awesome
this was so painful to watch
this.
Yes totally the wrong way to weld this.
That's a good piece of equipment.I've seen it very well.👍👍
good to see another weld master here!
Finally someone showing how to remove a weld.Good job
Thank you for opening up with such an important and clearly stated safety tip.

Rumor has it that he's still grinding that inside corner weld to this very day. 😂

These guys...turning something so simple, into a major science project!....lol
And also cool thing about the leather burrs: you can apply your own Schleifwinkel
Always enjoy these kind of videos. Great job and thank you for doing them.

i recommend using air file over dia grinder. air file can give you a clean surface finish in one step.
What do you mean by air file? I looked on YT but there were 3 totally different tools people were calling air files
Very useful. I was just trying to blend an inside weld last week.....it didn't work out so well
very interesting topic and good tip about the burr pulling. Unfortunately the leather thing didnt hold well
Very informative video. I learn something from you very often but, this is a real time saver. Thanks
I understand the need for these infomercials. Everyone needs a paycheck. Only complaint is... The weld videos have gotten shorter an these commercials got longer.
Want to try some of those leather bonds. Been using compounds on felt goblets to smooth the radius when I've had to and it costs a fortune.
I worked as grinder for 5ys at Paul Muellers. We made every things out of stainless steel.
Never seen those cartridge rolls before, but have used those burrs a lot. Often have thought about rigging up some kind of radius making guide for the die grinder so it's not so tedious.
BC Gerolamy/Cylinder Head Abrasives..Sacramento, Calif...USA!
I guess there's a market for them and it does make sense if you do need them. Good tip on using the burr's, but seems to take a lot of time.
There's a lot to learn about burrs before buying. Theyll cut quickly if the right one is used.
Thanks for the tips
Can you do a 3g 6010 root 7018 fill and cap on half inch plate?

Noticed your using an ESAB. Couldn't you use the machine to shape the concave weld?
My eyes tell me that this test was a complete damn FAIL
wait til its painted and the the throat size is too small for even 16gauge haha. Your eyes dont lie.
Hahaha! They make bonds and red puddy before paint. They gonna need it.
my boss would ask me whats taking so long, its a simple joint
4:06 "You just lightly keep stroking it and you pull… and what's going to happen is-"
Very informative
Great video. Very funny at the end lol 😂
Interesting! Would you consider an episode covering stainless steel mig on light gauge? Thanks!
Seems like a lot of cleaning up for such a small area of weld, wouldn’t it just be more time effective to TIG it?
I keep waiting for him to tell Bob that he's living in a van down by the river...
Previous posters that said Tommy Boy are dead on.

Are these Pferd leather burrs made out of horse leather?
Best stainless passivating method and go, also affordable
I've been trying to figure out a way of doing this on some furniture that I'm building from square tubing. This is good advise 👍
So long as you have some access into the corners, try using cross pads. They can hog some material off if you want and leave a super finish.
yeah john is trying to sale me his products, but you get beyond that there is a lot of good information and tips. To me get the details right people won't see the big mistake.

Don't get me started on running straynger beads lol
Lol
That's a lot of work with a burr, very specialized application. I use burrs often, but not for that.
Edit, I would change process to achieve the results I want before I would do this.
correct!
Adrian Gonzales saved me a bunch of typing.

Die grinders are useful tools. And if you run them on an air tool they are just as effective.
Yeah man, I always grab for air first. I put a little swivel style regulator valve at the inlet of my die grinders and I get infinite speed control and maneuverability! I would have used a dyna file with the smallest bearing wheel on it.
I agree
I am suddenly afraid of standing in corners, hats off to whoever's gotta do that all day long,
First weld, start in the corner and pull it out of the corner. 2nd weld, start at the side, pull it into and through the corner to the other side. No need to grind at all.
Are these available on amazon?
They are check out Micro100 and cobra carbide

Gloves anyone?
This is all fine and dandy but the shavings will be more than happy to get everywhere and embed in your fingers quite easily.
Bob your my boy and all but you seem so bored doing these videos with this dude lol
You lightly stroke and pull...... now my wife swears im watchin porn not welding videos.....
Mine says the same thing
Lol
Remember, you gotta work that pocket.
Hahaha
8:50 Like me this morning
I will never buy any products from this guy what a joke
So I love welding and all that but I also love funny... close your eyes and tell me this abrasives guy doesn’t sound like Norm McDonald lmao

pferd guy sounds like norm macdonald
Reminds me of the dentist
More welding less messing
what a hack job!! that looks like crap. can you imagine trying to do this on a real job?
Who knew Chris Farleys dad was a salesman..
Who broke the end grinder lol
Poor welder = Great grinder
Just tig no clean up needed
Dyna file anyone?
Im not pickin on this guy but no damn way that looked good after he was done.
I must misunderstand the problem, cause I didn't see any solutions.
Dude we put a man on the moon in 1969 and this is the fastest way you came up with?
3:00
rake, not shovel. as in rake -> pull toward you, shovel -> push away from you.
Hey youtube, Need 2.5 speed.
I love salesman!!
wtf,is it me or is anyone else sleepy ? 🤣

After 20years of welding it drives me crazy your far better off not stopping in the corner or tack in a corner... rookie mistake in my world
3M ceramic cartridge. Done. I love Bob, but this salesman is...well...a salesman.

I really can't stand this guy. It appears I'm not alone in this opinion.
