I appreciate the diversity of women reflected in this video. These stories contributed to the history of America and to the richness of the roles played by women in history. Love it!
A corset was not laced every time a woman wore them. They are fastened by metal hooks in the front. Thus, the portrayal in the "Gone With The Wind" laceing scene was not consistent with historical fact. They were not made of thin fabrics but of heavier materials that would stand up to the pull of a corset. Girls as young as 3 started wearing them. ... ( Hìstorical Womens Dress 1861-1865)
I have a corset from the 1800's. The breast area is made of very stiff wire. I cannot fathom how these women could wear them for hours. My guess is they couldn't.
These women followed the railroads as they were being built and at gold mine camps. Where there are single hard-working men with money, these ladies were more than able to take their 💰.
Documentaries are part of as well books... if not for women of the west alot of men would not be so famous... the fact that women helped build this country is never going to be valued. Yes men built this country but women helped fund their work.
Formations of towns involved the efforts of men and women. While its true most miners were men, there were some women who had mining claims. Nellie Cashman made several fortunes in Nevada, Arizona, and the Yukon. She owned restaurants, boarding houses, mining supply stores
That's why people had bowls and water jugs in their bedrooms. People have always washed themselves. Plus they had bathhouses and barbers in the same places. They always showed them in western towns.
So many of these women got rich off the backs of other women. Prostitution was big business in the old West and many profited from the exploitation of women, including other prostitutes. I think it’s rather sad actually. What happened to them when they fell pregnant? Instead of praising them for their beauty, they’re praised for their intelligence and commercial and business sense, and occasionally for their charity.
Women particularly in the Old West had almost no choices when it came to making money for themselves. They could marry and be completely dependent on their husband's. IF a woman wanted to be independent or at least try, there were very few choices. Possibly a school teacher, a seamstress, a nurse or doctors assistant. I do not know what women were paid but I am certain it was very meager. If a woman was really on her own and needed to make money to literally stay alive, yes, out in the Old West, there were plenty of men and yes, they were very eager to find a pretty woman. So brothels became very popular.
Many of the sex workers and saloon girls (Not always the same), would marry customers, there was less of a bias against it than in more modern times. With the men far out numbering the amount of women, there were more options for women. In reading about prospector/business owner Nellie Cashman she owned successful businesses ( restaurants/boarding houses, mining supply stores) with other women. In addition, Nellie funded hospitals and gave generously to people in need.
Obviously some of these “beauties” have not photographed well. Either that or our beauty standards are different. I do know that grooming and manners, clear skin, teeth and good hair went a long way to add to someone’s beauty. Or there was a low proportion of available women to men in early colonial/western society - so those available = beautiful. No one would admit to paying for an “unattractive” woman…. Does anyone else think Belle Starr looks like a man? I think she may have been a cross dresser, she has a hint of an Adam’s Apple.
Belle Starr is in my family tree through marriage to Sam Starr - no one ever spoke of her being a cross dressing man & I have serious doubts that she was I think she was just very rough & definitely not physically beautiful but she did have two children.

I wonder if the first person was the inspiration for the character of Irene Adler in the Sherlock Holmes story "A Scandal in Bohemia?"

The woman at 27:30 was Lilian Russell.
watching from NSW Australia.
I know that "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder", but this narrator is really stretching the term of "Beauty" when referring to some of these women.
Just repeat half dozen, who will notice?
Ok, all I could see on a few was when the photographer edited the images…some oddness was seen from staying still, but some was editing.

They had water and soap!
That's why people had bowls and water jugs in their bedrooms. People have always washed themselves. Plus they had bathhouses and barbers in the same places. They always showed them in western towns.
@susancrawford5927 there are also many natural hot springs in the west which were utilized.

Women were scarce in the Old West. Historians measure their presence as few as 1 woman for 40 men.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder...
Lourd très lourd…
Belle Starr is in my family tree through marriage to Sam Starr - no one ever spoke of her being a cross dressing man & I have serious doubts that she was I think she was just very rough & definitely not physically beautiful but she did have two children.
They did not have access to beauty products for hair care and makeup. How would a lot of modern women look without cover ups, dyes, and conditioners?
Just goes to show, we brunettes rock lol
What woman didnt open their own brothel? Lol
Where are those “ beauties” ? They are all average…
