My biggest reason for replacing my flat panel TV with a projector was glare. I was SO tired of glare getting in the way and if I'm going to be closing the blinds or dimming the lights to watch my favorite show ANYWAY, then I may as well go projector. I believe that 3 key things help with using projectors with ambient light in the room. First off, if you have a room with TONS of ambient light, you're always going to get TONS OF GLARE on your Flat Panel TV. I don't care how bright it is, you will see the glare and not the image you are trying to see on the Flat Panel TV. A screen with good Gain helps. Also, a 2,000+ lumens projector helps.....but only when paired with a really good contrast ratio. The contrast ratio helps in identifying things on screen despite ambient light fading the image out a little bit as opposed to a huge glare reflection of whatever is outside your sliding glass door or window completely blocking a majority of the image you are trying to see on the Flat Panel TV. Just to clarify: 1. Screen with gain of 1.0 or more 2. Projector with high lumens (preferrably 2,000 lumens or more) 3. Projector with a contrast ratio over 5,000:1 With these 3 things, you will not have as much of an issue with ambient light/sunlight. Lastly, EVEN ON A FLAT PANEL TV, THE BEST IMAGE QUALITY IS GOING TO BE IN A PITCH BLACK ROOM.
Great info kpaceguy, very informative. Nice job as usual. With such a wide range of projectors out there it's tough to make a choice. A lot of the projectors that I have seen are mounted in the ceiling never thought of having it mounted as you have, on a vertical stand. That's an option I never thought of, big thank you for showing! keep up the good work!
Very good instructions! Easy to follow and on point. I just got a TMY projector from Amazon. (Sept 20 2022) Picture is okay, but one thing not mentioned is the audio output. It's MONO! I get around this by using the audio output from my ROKU. I have the model with audio and composite out. I use the HDMI for the picture, but use the audio from the ROKU! It results in real 5.1 surround sound. It really makes a difference. The instructions for centering so you do not have to use keystone correction is spot on. The color correction tips are great! Wonderful useful upload! Thank you. Peace! I also want to mention that the screen that came with the projector is garbage! I spent a little more and got a good screen and WOW what a difference!
well done young man. I recently purchased an Epson 99 and a 955wh for weddings and karaoke at conventions. Your comments were very helpful. The projectors are a bit older but with the help of folks like you I'm going to make the best of it. 3000 lumens and 3500 lumens. If anyone has suggestions on these projectors to make them the best in lit areas... comments welcome.
Yes, right! You are right on spot, good job! I always try to avoid keystones and zooms, they only make the picture look worse especially on low budget projectors. Best is center right on screen and leave it at 100 percent and you get the best picture overall. :)
Omg wow. Simple but drastic difference lol. Now I feel like I put a soul in my projector. Mine has a resolution of 1080p but for some reason even the stock vivid mode was extremely dark. Now I’m even happier with my purchase, thank you.
Very good advice. You got it spot on. The screen size makes a difference too but i love the scrren the size it is. My partner has bad eyes and this has revolutionised ps4 play and watching discovery plus. Anyone who has a tv in their bedroom get rid of it n use a projectjor. Its like cinema every night and we bought a sound bar so it really is like being in the cinema and cheaper than a tv. Great advice. Thanks!
Thanks a lot, you explained it quite well. Mine was not able to focus clearly at the corners no matter how much tweaking I did. Lastly I just moved the projector lense a little bit towards right and tried focusing and it did work. The height of screen on the right side is a little higher now but still it is a lot better than watching an unfocused screen. Probably this info will help someone.
If the center is focused while the top left and bottom right are blurry and you can't fix it by proper projector placement in front of your screen, then the internal projection system (DMD LVDS) is not directly parallel to the focusing system (Projection Lens). A properly adjusted DMD is capable of giving clear focus on the entire screen. Optoma UK (and probably other manufacturers too) can fix this for free (you pay your own postage because it's not a defect, but they fix it without charging you) in a newly bought projector under warranty. I've had this really annoying problem on my Optoma, but there were no service centers in my country to fix it. I never bothered sending my new projector to another country, it would be too risky and expensive. It is really annoying if two corners are out of focus, especially if you're using the projector for gaming. According to the service manual, it's not considered a defect: "Blur image on one of the corner after adjustment is acceptable. However, the words should at least be recognizable. Note: - To avoid over adjusting." In other words, if you can read text, they might or might not fix your focus problems. And they'll not make it perfect, they'll tune it to be about right.
I am so glad I found your video. I have searched all over RUclips for a easy understanding of this subject. I have a mini projector in my bedroom a 1080p 3000:1 ratio. I want it above my bed on a shelf. When I place it there the picture is overblown and don't fit my screen. When I place it on a barstool in front of my bed with the height adjustment at the highest the screen is great. When I try to adjust the lense it gets smaller but blurry above my bed on a shelf. Do you have any suggestions?. Thank you.
I'm going to try to centre my projector better. I'm always having to add a book to try and level it because I currently have it on a desk with a tower of textbooks and it's... just bad. I have to decide what parts of the image I want most in focus it's annoying. But it's hard to put it dead centre because of the setup in my bedroom. I think I might get like a tripod and move things around in my room a bit. Also I'm just projecting it on to a wall for now because I havent decided where I want to put this permanently
I Know this is an old comment but did you ever figure it out? Even with a tripod I still have the same issue. I currently have a book but on one side only. Even centered it's NEVER leveled in the screen without a book. Especially on the tripod it sucks! It's 2024. I paid about $130 for the 4k projector after a coupon. It has Netflix & other apps built in it seems to be trash or I just can't tweak it correctly.
