GORE-TEX Products Test #3: Breathability

  • In the third episode, 'Masters of Moisture', the product testers Gordon and Ted demonstrate the breathability of the GORE-TEX fabric. They explain the secret behind the fact that GORE-TEX fabrics are not only durably waterproof and windproof, but also extremely breathable.
    Being protected from the wet and wind outside is essential for us to feel comfortable in harsh weathers. Yet when we are active and start to sweat, the inside of our clothes gets wet. Unless this dampness can dry, that is evaporate, we feel uncomfortable. The waterproof, windproof and breathable GORE-TEX fabric makes all that possible. The products keep us protected from wind, water, rain and snow, while letting our skin breathe and evaporate uncomfortable moisture, even underneath our clothes.
    With their experiments, which involve a gigantic bright red GORE-TEX glove large enough for Ted to wear as a suit, the testers prove that wet skin can dry inside the GORE-TEX fabric without getting wet from outside -- even swimming in a pond.

    This is an extreme exaggeration of Gore-tex capability. I own an active shell pant and a pro shell jacket. It's breaths a little better than a garbage bag, until you open pit zip. The pit zip does all the breathing. The other waterproof "breathable" jackets aren't that much better either. I used to use Gore-tex for hiking, running, snowboarding and skiing. They are extremely durable, dependable, and waterproof, but NOT REALLY BREATHABLE.
    I've find that if the it's raining, it's too warm for gore-tex and if it's snowing you don't need gore-tex. I am sorry for the harsh comment, but when you bought a jacket that claim to keep you dry while you do aerobic activities in the rain and you paid good money for it and then find out that you're soaked by your own sweat instead of the rain, it's disappointing.
    Just say that Gore-tex will let a little bit of moisture through to keep you comfortable enough as long as you're not doing prolong aerobic activities would be reasonable. How about you get some of your laboratory and marketing people out in the real world and see if the claim they are making it true. It does not appear to be.

      Thanh Truong If you exercise with normal clothes on you become covered with sweat. Are you expecting this material to drink your sweat and make it vanish? Even if you're naked you'll build up sweat, and that's ultimate breathability. Lol only way you can improve that is if you wick the moisture out and spread it into a greater surface area.

      My experience is that they are only waterproof as long as the outer is treated with water repellant.

    I like my Gore-Tex poncho because when it rains in the summer, you basically have to have the huge pit zips open like a poncho. Yeah, really breathable.

    What they need to do to check if goretex is breathable. Do a real world test get a out of shape guy, put a goretex jacket pants and boots on. Have him do a normal hike in the woods for 1 1/2 hours when it's about 40 - 45 degrees out with 100% humidity and pouring rain. I bet after he takes all his goretex breathable gear off, he and his clothes will look he walked around in the rain. He would be better off walking around without all the goretex at least he would be comfortable with his body actually breathing. I'm not out of shape and I have a North Face Summit Series jacket with goretex proshell that I have worn one and has been sitting in my closet for 6-7 years now. I went for a hike at night it was about 40 degrees out and about 1 foot of snow on the ground. I walked in the woods for about 2 hours and there was a rainforest going on inside my jacket. I was so hot clammy and uncomfortable. When I got back my shirt was so wet I squeezed so much sweat out. It was unreal.

    I recently spent 12 hours in a driving rain storm doing mandated environmental testing in an industrial plant. I was wearing a GoreTex jacket that was purchased around 1980. When I took it off in the evening, the outside was completed wetted and on the inside, it was 100% bone dry. There was a group of scientists present who examined both my clothes and the jacket and they were amazed having been present all day and having been soaked for most of it. Like me, they have become converts. After collecting them all these years, I now have about 50 GoreTex jackets and I never stop looking for another one. Every weight, every color, every design, every insulation...I'll never stop!

    LOL we have a suite of that material at our work for against the rain and it does work really comfortable, and rain can be so tight, i can feel there is less air in the air, because there is such an amount of water, and i got keep dry in a suit lie that its amazing.

    In my experience The effectiveness of the breathability depends a lot on how much heat you are generating. So it is fantastic for my wet weather cycling clothes. But for winter bird watching not so good. I theorise that that water gets evaporated near the skin but then cools and forms water droplets as it tries to go through the warm layers so becoming too big to go through the breathable layer. Maybe the problem is in the choice of fabrics for the warm layers.

    I thought when the outer layer gets saturated with water, breathability is gone. That's the reason behind the DWR treatment, isn't it? So how come this guys dry submerged in water?!

    • @GORETEXBrand
      @GORETEXBrand  5 лет назад +2

      Hi Adrian,
      GORE-TEX garments are breathable because of the GORE-TEX membrane that is bonded to the outer fabric. The DWR treatment is applied on top of the outer fabric.
      If the DWR wears off and the outer fabric becomes saturated with water, the water still won't enter through the membrane underneath and that membrane is still breathable, too. The garment would just become heavier because of the saturated outer fabric, which will also take longer to dry. The easy fix for this is to reactivate or reapply the DWR treatment. Find more info about this here: www.gore-tex.com/restoring-water-repellency
      👈
      In general, the DWR treatment has more to do with the waterproofness than with the breathability of a garment. You can check out these guys' waterproofness test right here if you're interested: ruclips.net/video/F9LoEMkl700/видео.html

  • @creationgret1
    @creationgret1 12 лет назад +2

    Remember. Gore-tex works on a temperature differential. Meaning, if its a chilly day and its raining, then you will be happy and dry. However if you go out on a warm spring day to fish the lake, and its drizzling, because the temperature outside the coat is very close to the temperature inside the coat then you will get soaked.

    I work with Gore-tex, we do 100% water test . We put the "bootie" made of gore-tex in a machine wich inflate the "bootie" and then we sumerge to do the test. This material is very resistant and very comfortable

    • @tacticalant3841
      @tacticalant3841 6 лет назад +1

      Poor science, you inflate the bootie? So its under pressure? Maybe gore tex works under pressure, but its physically impossible for sweat vapor to work its way out of the membrane while its wet outside, let alone submerged in water. The product is such a joke, but they have managed to corner the market with all the boot manufacturers so i cant buy an insulated leather boot without gore tex anywhere EXCEPT from Wiggy’s.
