I bought a used one for 40 bucks. Changed the speaker to a WGS ET 65. Sounds Great. Takes pedals nicely. Work your gear whether is expensive or cheap.
I’ve been plying an 20’ Ibanez RG 550 “Genesis” (NP) with maple neck through a Peavey “Piranha” 20 watt micro head with the 1x8” 6505 Peavey Cab in my bedroom with a Digitech “BadMonkey” overdrive pedal with “GREAT” success with $150 for Peavey amp/cab combo! It does what I need in my bedroom with what I feel is the world’s “Best” metal guitar!(#Ibanez#RG#550#”MyOpinion”). I wanted Fender tones so in early 2024 I purchased a Fender Player Series Strat (black) w/maple neck and 3 single coil pick-ups for that “Fender” tone! I ordered new a Fender (Mexi) Strat & a new Fender Champ 1x12” 40w cab w/2-position footswitch (channel/effects)that does what I wanted to hear! I might change to the Jenson “MOD” 12” 8ohm driver later but it “ALL” pleases me at this time!#🎸🔥🤘🏻#Fender#❤JohnFrusainte
Many years ago I had one for a few months. It did the Fendery clean country thing very well and basically that's all I care about. I remember the effects section sound kinda cheezy so sold the amp. Best clean sounding solid state amp I ever owned was a Blues Cube Hot.
The key for me is the EQ. Clean channel never out the treble above 4-5. Often times bass on 0. Certain voices need much different EQ settings.
Me: "wow that's pretty cool"
Him: "Sounds horrible"
hahahahaha
what's a better alternative for an amp in this price range :) I play mostly blues, rock and punk and have a pedalboard (I have a Vox ac15 but need a quieter amp for an apartment so trying to only spend 200 or less)
If tou have a ac15 just pot a preamp on your pedalboard and lower the volume... it is a great amp the ac15 i had sell my, its was sad..
I feel for 229 its decent, i played it at my local guitar shop and it sounds okay, the speaker i feel is why its not great. If you swap it or use headphones the actual amp electronics in it is good for its price
I have a Champion 20 and it really helped me in my first year and, as you said, they work better fulfilling such task.
However, I really like the Tweed Bassman (Tweed Red), the 65' Princeton (Black Panel Orange) and the British 60's (British Red) emulations when I have the Gain on 3,5 - 4,2 and Volume as high as possible (since it works more like an attenuator of sorts). Turns out they have a better tone than the clean chanel, giving a smoother note atack/decay and a pretty decent edge of break up tone for home use.
However, as we all saw, they hum a lot and the power amp is harsh when forced to work loud.
I wouldn't take the risk and go to a gig with it, even with the new speaker (cool idea btw).
Agora é esperar o vídeo do falante hehehe 👀👀
I really love this amp! Also the 2 channel with ds-2 pedal is better
I glad you like it! I gonna use it more as cab with a different amp and speaker stay tune for part 2 hahahaha cheers!
I swapped the speaker out with a celestial g12 unbelievable difference
COOL!!!
how many ohms got the original speaker?
Celestial, like those in the fantastic four?that must be celestial indeed 🙂
Good guitar player and very honest.
Thanks man! ps: check out my band if you have some time #mfilesband
This is a bit of a harsh review tbh. For what it is, it's a great amp to get started, figure out what you're into and what you like. Of course it's going to be a shitty amp, when we own Orange, Marshall, Tweed and Vox amps and look down at this, since we have a standard at that point. Objectively, for what it does, it's a beast in my opinion.
I agree with you, but you can make it better if you want, that's my point in the end. But I also do believe you could find better amps for the same price if to research for less known brands. I did not focus on that on the video, more on how to improve this one.
Use the clean and put a nice OD in front. There you go.
Complètement d'accord avec ça 😉
What is your favorite distortion on this amp? Voice
From the original amp, tweed red.
@@mfiles_official Thanks men
Honestly, this amp sounds much better with a Humbucker equipped guitar. I see a whole bunch of Fender headstocks behind you.
I have two fenders with hambuckers .. but the same still applies to it.. at the end of the day its all taste and opinion.
But you wont make the amp better with a different guitar... it just doesn't work like that.. ;)
Great review, looking forward to part 2. Maybe it'll be the "smart man's" tone master if it's a low cost good alternative.
Hahahaha Man, I should've thought of that title.. Thanks for the comment!
Nice video, I have this amp and have found the same problems you describe with the harshness of the higher frequencies. Please could you tell me where you are putting the joyo in the chain, is it before or after the other drive pedals you use?
Hey man sorry for the late reply I've been busy, i put the joyo after the gain pedals .. but modulation delays and revebs after
Do you think i can do some srv tone type thing on that amplifier?
@@lenardallen9770 you can, but with this amp you can only take it so far, like I said it is not a amazing amp, but put a tube screamer and a strat and you will get near. If you can afford a blues jr .. that will be 10 times better.
Thank you, very helpful video. What 300-dollar-ish amp would you recommend for intermediate bedroom guitarists? I'm looking for a nice clean to saturated sound like John Mayer.
THANKS GLAD YOU LIKE IT .. there is more coming..
I would recommend for the style a Vox MV-50 Clean or Boutique with some 12 or 10 inch speaker cabinet like a subzero hartwood..
it doesn't get better then this at low cost.
but you need a tube screamer or some sort of overdrive too.
I hate when product builds up some kind of Fan Club, where you're not allowed to say anything bad about it. It's your purchase, if you say it sucks, you're entitled to your opinion. Also, thanks for showing how you mic'd up the amp, since 90% of reviewers don not do this.
Thanks for the comment and support! :)
@@mfiles_official Anytime, and thanks for being _honest._ 🤙
Well that was depressing to hear! This was (still is) my first amp. The price was great with a lot of features but I am metal, alternative guy and after two + years I am still trying to dial in the perfect sound!
Stay with it. My opinion is just find one or a few general settings you like , for a base amp. Say a tweed and one black face. Then find your effects you like. I play live with so many small amps, and reviews are ones opinion, and that's that. Enjoy what you have, and enjoy playing.
Hey mate just because I don't like does mean one can not enjoy it! Changing the speaker helps but you don't have to do it.. if you like playing metal one quick tip that may help its using the joyo california sound it is a mesa boogie style preamp and for it does help to get a better tone out of this small amps. But once again if you are happy with your sound simple ignore all I've said about these, like its been said, mine it just ones opinion. Cheers!
@@LovinMusic1965 i agree .. thanks your comment.
Get a decent EQ pedal and experiement with drive/boost pedals, you'll be able to shape the tone to your liking. EQ pedals are the secret sauce all the pro session musicians use. There's a learning curve, but tons of useful info on forums/youtube.
"Garbage in, garbage out." Well, start by looking at the weight of this thing. It is suspiciously light for a box containing a 12" speaker. And of course it was designed to be light for 12-yr.-old students to tote to guitar lessons, etc. Compare this to the gut-busting Deluxe Reverb (a real, serious amp likewise with a single 12" speaker) or even the 1x12 Blues Jr. And if you really wanna get crazy with this comparison, compare it to the grunt-heavy Monoprice bare cabinet loaded with a single 12" Celestion V30 (a very popular legitimate speaker). That should be a red flag right from the get-go. Light weight and quality sound are (unfortunately) two mutually exclusive things when it comes to amps.
Fender marketing really did their homework on this thing. They must employ a whole team of psychologists to probe the minds of the kids who are impressed with all the bells and whistles packed into this dog. Low price, low weight, Fender name, lots of stuff to impress the kids just starting out. But mostly, low quality and crappy sound. Got it - a winner for Fender's bottom line.
Reminds me of how Martin Guitars (a truly iconic brand) has sullied their name over the last several years with all the cheap crap that they've been cranking out. Sad to have seen them jump on board the train. I can't tell you how many lousy acoustic guitars I went through as a youth before I finally ponied up the cash ("buy once - cry once") and bought a Martin D-28.
It is very rare to see a product sold on Amazon get a comprehensive 5-star rating from a fairly large pool of reviews. And yet this thing does. What does that tell us? It tells me - as it has for years - to take Amazon reviews (many of which are of course fake/paid) with a grain of salt.
But Thank God for the even rarer occasional review like the one above that is TRULY honest.
Did you compare a $200 amp to ones that cost 3 to 5 times or more? Not really a fair comparison.
Put an Eminence Swamp Thang in it and I dare you to call it a trash amp !
Haha well if it came with a bad speak it is still bad of the combo, but i did change it I put the celestion neo v-type .. but hey at the end of the day its all about taste you can like as much as I can dislike it. But the ideia of the video its to help not offend owners.
plenty of reviews on you tube where this amp sounds great i dont know how this guy managed to make it sound so bad .sounded like he had the bass at zero and the treble on 10 .
Thanks for the comment. As you probably saw, bass on ZERO was NOT the config I had on the video. But maybe I have a different opinion or maybe I'm not trying to get sponsorship from fender like other channels, who knows... the point is that if you did not get anything good out of the video, I can only hope you BUY IT AND ENJOY THE AMP. But just in case you don't, come back here and have a look at the tips in the video. Maybe it will help you, and if it does, don't forget to leave another comment.
get a new speaker and that thing will rock .....
I like mine but the bass is too much.
@@farber2 changing the speaker could reduce bass and enhance mids
Fender is a rich man's club brand, for their amps at this price better go for Blackstar or Orange.
Fender's a rich man's club brand? Anyway, Blackstar's SS Debut amps reek, especially the 10 and 15. The Debut 50's a little better than the Champion 50X; IOW, mediocre.
Take lessons from "5 minute music" Fender Champion 40.....then head on over to true fire and you need a much higher end fender stratocaster and get a TUNER!!!
Sorry are you talking to people in general, or to me? 😅
Dissing it he has a vox on display biast review I'd say.
You are saying I work for vox? Haha if so.. well I wish, would be cool to have them sponsor may band unfortunately it is not the case.. I do like fender all my guitarras fender and i could have a hot rod deluxe for the rest of my life .. but this champ 40 well its a beginners level and it does suck but could a starting amp but it a bit expensive cause you are paying the the brand as beginner's too..
Why do a review of an amp and start out with it sucks that's ridiculous.
All reviews have to be positive? I bought the amp and it does suck, but I'm gonna show ways to improve it. If you are not interested just you don't have to see the video.
There are people out there who think they know it all. And you are one of them. I am not going to spend my time, proving how good this amp is. I would rather leave that to the audience, who have enough understanding than to listen to your comments before buying. Yea, Fender is a foolish company, who employ qualified and educated fools to design their amps. They should have come to you, hey ? Just because you are testing something, doesn't mean you know anything about it. Your review is not worth it.
@@THESINNERSPUNE hey mate, you don't need to agree with me. But also don't have to like everything that fender does, I love fender as a brand amp I like most of their amps, but this is not one of them. On the other hand this is a product for kids to start playing so depending you your level of playing it could be a good amp indeed. My whole point was to give tips to make it better. Some people appreciate that others like you don't. But it is what it is you have to be angry about it. All the best you.
