So It's been about a year since I released that big Immersive Sim video and looking back at it now it makes me ask: Where are all the immersive sims now??? This video is me taking a look at all the up and comers we knew about when the last ImSim video. Let's see how the system shock remake, System Shock 3, VTMB 2, whatever that thing the Ken Levine and Ghost Story Games are doing right now, and everyone else too.
Here's that talk Ken Levine did by the way • #GAMELAB20 The ever-ch...
There also the matter of some new things that have came onto my radar since the ImSim video such as GloomWood, Graven and Peripeteia. All the up and comers have been fairly busy and there's a couple demos you can paly right now! It seems like Immersive Sim might become an indie Dominated Genre in the near future!

Okay folks I'm putting this to bed. After getting a little under 10 hours in, cyberpunk 2077 is NOT an immersive sim. It's a very nice open world RPG that occasionally let's you do things in different ways but it frequently just railroads you into doing things the way the game wants you to do them (almost always a shootout) and there's no real emergent gameplay; everything you can do was intended by the devs and it's very hard, if not impossible to make your own way in game without following a predetermined path.
I agree, but man I wish it was. The tabletop roots and hacking approach are begging for it
I have to say, the first choice you make has already an impact on the missions you are getting, also most levels I played you could choose if you do stealth, hacking, hack or shoot, or a mix of all , and you often have different outcomes, you can safe a guy or don't, if you safe the guy, he will help you later, but it is never said that that guy is to safe...stuff like that, I would go so far, that after 10 ours of gameplay, you are still scratching the surface of that is possible, some augmentation for example change the gameplay drastically....
@@IcoOst i heard from multiple people that stealth was basically a non-option
@@percher4824 eh stealth is difficult and finicky, but as far as i can tell most encounters allow you to disengage and approach it differently. of course, though, that does mean that the occasional quest does railroad you into a firefight at first.
@@percher4824 they were wrong, I do mostly stealth and hacking, with some additional slicing
That cat looks about as happy as a PS4 running Cyberpunk 2077.
or on xbox one where i am lucky enough for for it to only crash 2 times and come close to crashing about 20 or 10 times for me and i started playing 2 days ago
I feel like CDPR not making cyberpunk run on base consoles was a great strategy to divert attention away from how shallow the game turned out
@@Oldhandlewasabitcringe it isn't

Life is an immersive sim.
And we're stuck in dev hell.
didnt like the last corona expansion, to be honest i miss the late 2010's
@@cocainer621 Yeah, the corona expansion kind of goes against that whole "outside" part of the game. To be fair, it's a few tens of thousands of years old, but you do begin to miss it after an entire year without. It also acts as a hub, so even if you're just moving from one "inside" to another, you still have to trek through outside. That and I heard it's a major component of our characters' in depth psychological system.

Understandable. Have a great day.
Good stuff, although as has been mentioned, Bloodlines 2 should be in dev hell. As well, take another look at the writing situation with firing Mitsoda and who they're bringing in. Trashfire inbound.
Hey did Bloodlines 2 actually promise an immersive sim? Or are we just speculating on it?
@@aiedangahwiler9291 It's expected with the name.
If they don't deliver, there will be hell.
I got an idea for an awesome immersive sim. A game set in a post-modern, brutalist world based on Kafkas books, where your upgrades and new abilities turn you into a bug. Would so love to play such a game.
nice fetish bro. no cap, i support you.
@@ByzantineDarkwraith Fetish? I just like Kafka's books and think they would make an interesting setting for an ImmSim or RPG. Instead of only using Lovecraftian horror as a "unique" setting, it would be fun if developers tried something else, and Kafka's absurd writing would most likely make for an interesting experience.
we live in a post modern brutalist world based on Kafka, Kafka was writing about real life
I like how you say Mitsoda being fired meant the story part of Vampire was complete, when the article gave the implication that he was NOT done writing at all, saying that saying he was shocked was underselling it. No one expects to be outright fired from the development of a project before their work is done. This doesn't bode well at all.
It’s clear paradox didn’t think the three main creators vision would sell well so they want to recreate it to try to appeal to a wider audience
At least he didnt go like chris avallone
@@lpj2216 the reason behind him getting fired makes at least some sense. Regardless if the accusations against him being real of not, just having someone with some serious allegations as an employee at your company makes you look pretty bad. Here it just seems like paradox was just worried about sales
You know, I’m obsessed with you talking about immersive sims. You do them so well, and not many people have opinions on them on RUclips. Besides Razorfist. Keep up the good work. Love all of your content!
You should watch strat-edgy i think you'll like em'
Fun fact : Peripeteia (peh-ree-peh-tee-ah) means "Adventure" in Greek! :)
I would have thought it's *tee-ya
Brian Mitsoda was Fired how can you not be worried?
But the rest of the video is gold Have a merry Christmas X
Along with Avelonne leaving
All three creative directors were fired, I’m assuming they wanted to appeal to a wider audience considering how political Brian’s writing was in the original bloodline considering how risk averse paradox is
i feel like vampire 2 should be put in devhell section
The biggest shame of that is the fact that they had that whole massive ARG set up with the final being the reveal trailer drop
@@datguyuno98 to me the worst thing is hard suit labs working on it, theyre solid at making multiplayer fps, why make that studio do a fucking singleplayer story focused rpg
It all blurs together so much that I was surprised when Cyberpunk 2077 came out. Somehow I thought I just heard a week ago it won't be out for another year or two.
@My irons are rusted Nah, they are just gonna be garbage anyways.
The only issue Cyberpunk has is bugs.
You can fix bugs.
You can't fix bad writing.
The best immersive sim mechanics that I have seen in 2020 is the double jump of Doom Eternal.
heh unreal tournament has had double jump since unreal tournament 2004
i´ve wondered, charlatan´s Doom Eternal review was bad because he considered for some reason 2016 an Imm. Sim, and played it the wrong way, or it was about the difficulty?
I had an epileptic attack playing system shock 2 so I hope that I can play more of this world in the future, awesome game (no joke, the game was so great and I drank so much coffe that I had fucking seizures)

I played the DEMO of the System Reshock around summer and damn it's good, really looking forward to it. Main thing I dislike about it the level layout which is a complaint about the OG System Shock
As for Atomic Heart, there was a large video on 4game channel after the dude visited Mundfish. But it's in russian and we can't be sure there were no money briefcases under his table
Good video. As someone kinda new to the genre, it's good to get a run down on the current scene of things. Gloomwood's looking interesting, gives a genuine "old PC charm"
Ive been waiting for a cooking segment, i am now a big sad because i dint see a cooking segment.
Any ways cheers, wonderful content love it, and thank you for all of the entertainment
Don't worry, it's coming soon
You can be sure that the cooking segment is my second favourite part.
The first is the cat pictures.
I love how most of these games still haven’t come out!
I think Gloomwood is more like a stealth game with some immersive sim elements. And the Bioshock series also being action adventure rather than imsim with Dark Messiah thingies sprinkled over.
I can't believe how right you were about Cyberpunk
I kinda figured it would be kinda buggy and just ok. I got it for my One S and it's playable and I'm enjoying it. I wish it was better optimized and less buggy but I also play a lot of Dead By Daylight and they've released content they knew didn't work. The thing that's suprised me the most is that it's only crashed once and I blame myself for spamming grenades. If you get it for a last gen console, do not fast travel! It makes the resolution and NPC spawning to bug out.
@@ehoffart529 Thing is, you can fix bugs.
And the writing is good otherwise! So the Game can easily be fixed to be stellar.
You can't fix bad writing, and that is what VTMB2 looks like.
@@toolatetothestory eeehh as much as I'd like it to be fixed I think the console version will always be pretty bad. It'll take quite awhile and new bugs are still coming out. Don't get me wrong I like the story and the gameplay is fine enough but ultimately I definitely think less of the game currently. I got this new bug the other day that actually made me laugh pretty hard. The game disabled my ability to move forward and back but not strafe right or left and move my camera. Basically I had to crab walk my way to a fast travel to reload the area.
I've watched your immersive sim videos so many times lol

I think Ken levine learned from how much he hyped up Infinite. Probably gonna do a Bethesda and announce at e3 or some other con and then release it a year later

Also hope your channel keeps growing
Bought Gloomwood's EA as soon as it came out and discovered the immersive sim genre. I am obsessed now
No mention of Core Decay? I hear that was an Immersive Sim being developed right now
My understanding of the Mick Gordon - Bethesda split is that Mick missed several deadlines so they had to mix the OST without him, then planned to use his mix when he finished it, but he never did. He took issue with how they mixed it and said he probably won't work with them again.
If that's true, as much as I like his work, it sounds like Mick is being a drama queen.
Bethesda refused to provide the resourses he needed to complete mixing in time. He asked them to hire several people or a studio, I don't remember corrrectly, but they fucked him over. Overall, Bethesda is to blame, because they announced that Doom Eternal's OST will be included in Collector's Edition in the release date. The official soundtrack of Doom 2016 came out several months later after the release of the game, because nobody at Bethesda bothered Mick with impossible deadlines.
Great video, wish you would have included Shadow of Doubt though.
I oive your videos and everything you cover on Immersive sims.
Love that Cs office background
Latest iteration of System ReShock's demo is pretty good, I gotta say.
I love your videos. Keep it up!
Charlatán wonder creating another vídeo about inmersive sim? Wow, what a surprise... This is the third time I watch the video
I just hope both Square Enix and Eidos Montreal let go of Thief IP. It's literally a hostage situation as it is.
I may as well list off some of the immersive sims I shared when Boulder Punch did his own videos on the genre.
The games I can think of that are either upcoming or in early access are
- Almost Epic Adventures™: Neverlooted Dungeon (that is the full name, yes, including the trademark), a first person dungeon crawler with a focus on lots and lots of booby traps to circumvent. Everyone loves physics puzzles, right? Don't know if the full game will have combat or NPC interaction, the demo only had hidden treasure and booby traps.
- Skin Deep, a game from Blendo Games of Quadrilateral Cowboy/30 Flights of Loving fame. It's set on a space station being held hostage by pirates, with you hired to infiltrate the location and clear it out. It's got some Die Hard vibes in terms of stealth, with broken glass getting stuck in your bare feet as a gameplay mechanic.
- Filcher, a game looking like a modern-day Thief. Unlike Thief Simulator, which came out a couple years ago and was more open world, this one is much more level-based like the original Looking Glass games.
- Teardown, which just came out in EA earlier this year. It's all voxel-based with a focus on destruction, so like no NPC interactions currently, barely any stealth or combat. It's all about just pulling off robberies, heists, demolition jobs or what have you, whichever way you see fit, as long as that way involves blowing things up.
- Consortium: The Tower. Three years in early access, zero slated 1.0 release date, basically a game about resolving a hostage situation on a sci-fi complex. Strong focus on interactions with other characters.
- Pathologic 2. Don't forget that game still has two more character campaigns in development.
Deus Ex Mankind Divided made a lot of money, they just expected more and so the game failed to hit their goal the sequel was scrapped. They could save themself now returning to it.
Can't wait for the next Bioshock
Hopefully we get a trailer soon
honestly the one game I'm looking forward to the most rn is Gloomwood
and here I thought Charlatan wonder actually was the cat
Also, I forget if you mentioned it in your original ImSim video, but keep an eye on "Consortium: The Tower." ;)

“Rebirth of the immersive sim”
Hahahahaaaa!!!! *sobs*
You should check out Industria which is supposedly coming out next year
I really hope system shock doesn't get cancelled
I feel like they should have done what Bioware did with Kotor's semi-turnbased pausable combat for the Vampire game. It'd make using skills and magic a lot more fun, and slow combat wouldn't matter that much.
Update from 4th quarter 2021: Only Deathloop has come out this year. The rest of the games mentioned in this video are either delayed indefinitely (meaning "abandoned & never coming out") or have disappeared completely without a word from the developers.
i can say with certainty it’s not coming out in early 2022
Hey man, which game is that Merry Christmas background in the beginning of the video from?
I’m gonna start playing NFL or something at least they are certain to come out every year

Would you say that the Legend of Grimrock are immersive sims? If you haven't played any of them, I just played GR2 and it's so freeking good.
The bosses are often frustrating, but the exploration and puzzeling are super fun.
What's also super cool is that LoGr2 has a ton of fan made campaigns that are as good as, if not sometimes better, the main campaign.

The Atomic Heart situation is the worst for me. I remember the first trailers of it and thought this game looked amazing. Didn’t even think of it as an immersive sim but I guess that’s why I loved the idea. So sad to see that it might never be finished.
Vtm bloodlines 2 is based on vtm 5th ed. Which is gonna be a storyline limitation.
Besides streamlining the system to allowing different books to actually interact with each other its objectively worse.
And just to preempt the New World of Darkness fanboys your people literally published a book about being a sexual predator written by a known sexual predator that they have continued to sell and profit on even after they could no longer deny all the rapes the writer committed.
