Otsuyu's over-grooming maybe a sign of stress. My sister's cat started licking the fur off his rear, paws, and tail-basically anywhere he could reach. Couldn't figure out what the cause was. We initially assumed it was fleas, an allergy, or something in his diet. Brought him to the vet, ran blood work, gave him medication, and changed his kibbles. About a month in with very little improvement, I temporarily took the cat into my house and after a couple of weeks, he slowly stopped over-grooming and his fur returned. Long story short, we realized it was her new baby whose crying stressed him out. It's been about 3 years since then and they're best buds now. Hopefully Otsuyu can break that habit.
This is true.cats definitely do this same thing with the obsessive overgrooming when stressed or in stressful situations. This may be the same thing with your beautiful girls.Dan Ubec suggested separating them...I think that may be a good idea,but only for a certain period of time each day...just so mama can destress,unwind,and relax on her own for a bit.this might help curb her overgrooming habits.they are sisters though,so I think with time they will make up.🙂sorry to hear this,and sorry you're in the middle being the human mama.sending positive vibes and much luck.✌

@@epic7224 It's probably animal pica. Someone suggested it on one of the videos. Turns out it really exists. As for stress, from what I hear, a stressed out otter will chew its tail constantly, sometimes until the tail gets maimed. So far, none of loutre's otters appear stressed at all, so otsuyu's problem is something else

Otsuyo is anxious for some reason. She needs another way to let out her frustration or stress. Or.. maybe it is a neurological condition. But Odashi and the kids have had enough. It is not fair to them to have to tolerate this behavior. Odashi loves Namida and Wasabi as her own babies. So she is going to protect them when they cry in pain. I hope Otsuyo can get the help she needs. Maybe some medication that helps with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. It must be upsetting for human Mama to see this happening. Ask the vet.
Plucking fur with otters is like chewing nails with humans. It starts with stress, neurologic problems, or observing and copying. Or others. But over time, no matter if the cause is still there or not, its a habbit. And getting rid of it then needs willpower and focus. Otters do have that. But they are not as rational as humans... so it takes additional effort. Either by other otters, by the enviroment, or their caretakers.
It's easier to replace a habit than just stopping it. I know physical activity like running reduces stress so maybe by getting her to do that around the times she would usually pluck hairs would help her.
I have to agree, this is sad. Odashi and Otsuyu have been so close since...forever. But Otsuyu was a bit too neurotic that her daughters also have to suffer and I understand that even Odashi was angry to her. I am happy to see the children's hair looks so good now. I hope Odashi can forgive otsuyu and they will be together as usual 💕💕💕💕
I agree with Dachdog. The root problem is Otsuyu plucking her own fur, then transferring the behaviour to Namida and Wasabi as well. Consulting their veterinarian would be a good start. Perhaps Odashi would be more likely to forgive if she sees that her sister has stopped plucking completely.
Mamma Loutre, you are an amazing caregiver and protector of your otterbeings. They are so lucky to have you. What an amazing auntie the babies have in Odashi. She protected them from the sister she she loves more than anything. She too is suffering over it. Perhaps all the sisters need is some time away from each other and Otsuyu can somehow get over her own fur plucking as well. Maybe the vet could recommend something safe to put on her fur that is safe but tastes bad to discourage the behavior like they do for other animals? I literally had to give my papillon zanex to finally get her to stop doing that exact thing to herself. As a last resort. It took 6 months but was well worth it. Our fur babies are worth it all! My heart is with you and the otters while this is getting worked out. All your amazing viewers are too💛🦦💛💛
I figured it was Otsuyu who was pulling the kids fur out since she did it to herself. I guess it's good that Aunt Odashi intervened on behalf of the children. Their coats look beautiful. Hopefully, Odashi won't stay mad at her sister much longer.
I am blind, so i can't see the video, but i have been following these otters through the comments below the video. sorry to hear Otsuyu is pulling her fur and has started pulling the fur of her cubs too. Odashi is wonderful for sticking up for the cubs and having words with her sister. all the best to the four otters.

A fight?! Oh no! 😣 I see. So it was Odashi that stopped Otsuyu from overgrooming the little twins. No wonder their furs are no longer patchy. But Otsuyu tried to do it again and they fought. Odashi is really angry now and wont accept Otsuyu's attempt to reconcile. I hope they can get along well again soon. And i hope Otsuyu cured herself from her bad habbit of overgrooming her twins. Maybe put them in separate cages next to each other like how Ui got comfortable with Kotaro and Hana? I'm sure they will make up, they are sisters after all ❤️
This breaks my heart beyond words - but I did have the impression that something was off between Odashi and Otsuyu 😢 Taking sides or blaming won't help, and I believe Mama Loutre is doing an amazing job at making things better for everyone 💕 Both girls need love and support, although in different ways. I wish I could be of any help....
Odashi is probably more hurt than angry. She loves those babies as her own and took equal part in raising them. Granted, we don't see everything, I do recall a few times Otsuyu put her foot down when it came to what she felt was best for the twins and Odashi stepped back.. I could understand why she would expect the same respect in return. Either way I hope they work it out soon.
Odashi _adores_ Wasabi & Namida so much. Remember the early videos? Otsuyu would carry the pups in her mouth but Odashi never did, maybe because she didn't think she could do it without hurting them… she rolled them. 😅 However, Odashi is also a protector. If that means shielding WasaMida from their own mother's neurosis, so be it.
@@Soufriere84 yeah, odashi is still traumatized from losing her baby. She does every for those babies. Except share her food lol, but I think that is what healthy otters are supposed to do (not share their food, thus, making their babies figure things out at an appropriate age). She plays with them, teaches them about being an otter.. she’s a strong mama figure for them. Otsuyu is a sweet girl, but has her neuroticism that is driving much of what she does.
@@jwibao I’ll try to look for it. She did lose her baby, was a stillborn. I think that drives much of her protective instincts. Especially for these babies. If she perceived what she saw as Otsuyu as hurting them, then she would do as any protective mama.. even against her own sister.
@@jwibao There was no video about it. Part of it is on Loutre-Mama's Instagram though. *Long story short:* Odashi mated with Oage in Spring 2020. She gave birth to one pup that July but it was stillborn.
So sorry this has happened. Sometimes veterinarians can prescribe medication that helps with obsessive/compulsive behaviors in animals (such as biting their own skin or fur pulling). Hopefully time will heal the rift between Odashi and Otsuyu. 🙏 Namida and Wasabi's fur is looking healthier!
If they don't make up we can deal with it . Just don't let them hurt each other. When the video first started I thought one of them had died. We 've lost a few otters in the past months and I don't think I could stand another. Love to the twins and babies.
Since it says outright they got into a fight, I didn't think any otter had died, but I worried one might have been hurt. Also it's not clear if "Twin" meant Odashi/Otsuyu or Wasabi/Namida. I'd hate for the pups to get into a real fight. But, I'm not surprised Odashi finally lost it with her neurotic sister. Anyway, I agree. Between Stella and Moon Na, we've lost too many beloved young otters already.

So sorry about this complication. I'm sure there is a solution. Perhaps you could ask for advice from Otter man on how he helped Ui get over her resentment and jealousy. He's especially good at sorting out how to handle the problems of otters with emotional issues.
My heart is crying. I realize the "typical" otter may hold a grudge forever, but these aren't "typical" otters. They have a very special bond. We have ALL seen it. When Odashi having never given birth started lactating and nursing the children, that was not an ordinary occurrence. Otsuyu and Odashi are very connected in everyway. Body, mind and soul.. God knows their love is a very special kind of love. I have never owned an otter, yet I have 2 cat's that are rescues. When they have trauma I put on music and they calm down. I will be praying for complete healing and reconciliation. Your otters were what made me fall in love with otters. We all love your channel. You give us all so much joy and happiness.
While I certainly hope the O-Twins reconcile, this was probably inevitable. Otsuyu has been very neurotic since before WasaMida were born. If Odashi felt, correctly, that Otsuyu was hurting her own kids, of course she would step in. However, they're _not_ Odashi's kids and Otsuyu-mama took offense. Odashi was right to scold her sister. Unfortunately, Odashi is also known to hold grudges. 💔💔 Good luck navigating this one, Loutre-mama. 😔
I wonder if her stress has anything to do with having to raise her two children apart from Oage? After all, otters are very social and an otter father would be involved under normal circumstances. Just a theory of mine.
1. Can Otsoyu get a mild tranquilizer? Only mild. 2. Separate them, would have to be Otsoyu kept apart for a few days, then let them just see each other with a gate between. Reintroduce them, same as bringing a new cat home where there is already a cat. 3. Amazing that Odashi is so protective. Losing hair seems very serious for an otter. They need it to stay normal tempurature with all the time they spend in the water.

Best thing to do, I think, is to talk to an animal behaviorist (動物行動学者). They are usually trained with what to do in this type of situation. Perhaps you can also talk to aquariums (水族館) that keeps otters and see what they have to say about it. And also, of course, as others have said, talk to a vet (獣医) about what can be done.
Odashi loves the twin children as she loves her sister Otsuyu. She had to do it, after so many months seeing Otsuyu's behavior and the girl's pain. Odashi seemed to be sad on the latest videos. Hope Otsuyu will overcome this emotional disorder . On humans there is a similar disorder named by " Tricotilomania" in Portuguese (Idk the corresponding in English). 🍃 This is sad perhaps always being together can cause stress for all four of them. It is good to have space and time away from one another to relax. I read a really good research paper on otters in captivity (zoo) and it talked about how frozen fish diet can deplete vitamin B levels in otters. Vitamin B is essential for helping manage stress levels and the article mentioned they gave them Vit B supplements. If you want the research paper let me know and I can send it to you via email. It is written in English though. I am sure your vet can do a blood test to find out Otsuyu vitamin B levels. I wonder about vitamin D as well since the otters don't get outside on a regular bases. I read many of the posts and there are so many great ideas to bring Odashi and Otsuyu back together to find their harmony again. I will send good energy their way to find in their hearts to forgive one another. ♥ It will work out just give it time. 🍃🐾🍃

あんなに仲良しだった2人が…信じられません。とてもショックだけどおだしちゃんは2人の事を本当に、ミルクが出るほどに、我が子のように思って居たからこその行動だったんでしょうね。おだしちゃんとおつゆちゃんの仲良しな姿がいつかまた見られますように。ママさんも傷ついていると思います、どうか思い詰めたりご自身を責めたりせずに居てくださいね。

犬でさえ喧嘩しても数時間したらすぐ忘れるのに、カワウソは一度嫌いになったらずっとダメ（かもしれない）とは、なんて知能の高い、感情も豊かな生き物なのかと感心しました。
もちろん、だしつゆは絆が深いのでしばらくしたら仲直りできますよ。こんなに賢い２匹なのだから！
Odashi is probably more hurt than angry. She loves those babies as her own and took equal part in raising them. Granted, we don't see everything, I do recall a few times Otsuyu put her foot down when it came to what she felt was best for the twins and Odashi stepped back.. I could understand why she would expect the same respect in return. Either way I hope they work it out soon.
Odashi _adores_ Wasabi & Namida so much. Remember the early videos? Otsuyu would carry the pups in her mouth but Odashi never did, maybe because she didn't think she could do it without hurting them… she rolled them. 😅
However, Odashi is also a protector. If that means shielding WasaMida from their own mother's neurosis, so be it.
@@Soufriere84 yeah, odashi is still traumatized from losing her baby. She does every for those babies. Except share her food lol, but I think that is what healthy otters are supposed to do (not share their food, thus, making their babies figure things out at an appropriate age). She plays with them, teaches them about being an otter.. she’s a strong mama figure for them. Otsuyu is a sweet girl, but has her neuroticism that is driving much of what she does.

@@jwibao I’ll try to look for it. She did lose her baby, was a stillborn. I think that drives much of her protective instincts. Especially for these babies.
If she perceived what she saw as Otsuyu as hurting them, then she would do as any protective mama.. even against her own sister.

*Long story short:* Odashi mated with Oage in Spring 2020. She gave birth to one pup that July but it was stillborn.

So sorry this has happened. Sometimes veterinarians can prescribe medication that helps with obsessive/compulsive behaviors in animals (such as biting their own skin or fur pulling). Hopefully time will heal the rift between Odashi and Otsuyu. 🙏 Namida and Wasabi's fur is looking healthier!
If they don't make up we can deal with it . Just don't let them hurt each other. When the video first started I thought one of them had died. We 've lost a few otters in the past months and I don't think I could stand another. Love to the twins and babies.
Since it says outright they got into a fight, I didn't think any otter had died, but I worried one might have been hurt. Also it's not clear if "Twin" meant Odashi/Otsuyu or Wasabi/Namida. I'd hate for the pups to get into a real fight. But, I'm not surprised Odashi finally lost it with her neurotic sister.
Anyway, I agree. Between Stella and Moon Na, we've lost too many beloved young otters already.

Everything is possible Mama Loutre! Look what Otterman was able to do with Ui! Odashi is a protector. She has protected Otsuyu and does the same with the children. Hopefully she just needs time to forgive her. They will miss each other’s hugs and sleeping next to each other. It is sad, but is will pass. 💖💖💖

So sorry about this complication. I'm sure there is a solution. Perhaps you could ask for advice from Otter man on how he helped Ui get over her resentment and jealousy. He's especially good at sorting out how to handle the problems of otters with emotional issues.

I realize the "typical" otter may hold a grudge forever, but these aren't "typical" otters.
They have a very special bond.
We have ALL seen it.
When Odashi having never given birth started lactating and nursing the children, that was not an ordinary occurrence.
Otsuyu and Odashi are very connected in everyway. Body, mind and soul..
God knows their love is a very special kind of love.
I have never owned an otter, yet I have 2 cat's that are rescues.
When they have trauma I put on music and they calm down.
I will be praying for complete healing and reconciliation.
Your otters were what made me fall in love with otters.

While I certainly hope the O-Twins reconcile, this was probably inevitable. Otsuyu has been very neurotic since before WasaMida were born. If Odashi felt, correctly, that Otsuyu was hurting her own kids, of course she would step in. However, they're _not_ Odashi's kids and Otsuyu-mama took offense. Odashi was right to scold her sister. Unfortunately, Odashi is also known to hold grudges. 💔💔 Good luck navigating this one, Loutre-mama. 😔
I wonder if her stress has anything to do with having to raise her two children apart from Oage? After all, otters are very social and an otter father would be involved under normal circumstances. Just a theory of mine.
1. Can Otsoyu get a mild tranquilizer? Only mild.
2. Separate them, would have to be Otsoyu kept apart for a few days, then let them just see each other with a gate between. Reintroduce them, same as bringing a new cat home where there is already a cat.
3. Amazing that Odashi is so protective. Losing hair seems very serious for an otter. They need it to stay normal tempurature with all the time they spend in the water.

Best thing to do, I think, is to talk to an animal behaviorist (動物行動学者). They are usually trained with what to do in this type of situation.
Perhaps you can also talk to aquariums (水族館) that keeps otters and see what they have to say about it.
And also, of course, as others have said, talk to a vet (獣医) about what can be done.
Odashi loves the twin children as she loves her sister Otsuyu.
She had to do it, after so many months seeing Otsuyu's behavior and the girl's pain.
Odashi seemed to be sad on the latest videos.
Hope Otsuyu will overcome this emotional disorder .
On humans there is a similar disorder named by " Tricotilomania" in Portuguese (Idk the corresponding in English).

🍃 This is sad perhaps always being together can cause stress for all four of them. It is good to have space and time away from one another to relax. I read a really good research paper on otters in captivity (zoo) and it talked about how frozen fish diet can deplete vitamin B levels in otters. Vitamin B is essential for helping manage stress levels and the article mentioned they gave them Vit B supplements. If you want the research paper let me know and I can send it to you via email. It is written in English though. I am sure your vet can do a blood test to find out Otsuyu vitamin B levels. I wonder about vitamin D as well since the otters don't get outside on a regular bases. I read many of the posts and there are so many great ideas to bring Odashi and Otsuyu back together to find their harmony again. I will send good energy their way to find in their hearts to forgive one another. ♥ It will work out just give it time. 🍃🐾🍃
