Hi Mike, Can one use washed crushed coal? I ask this because it appears that the old mortar in my wall has little flecks of what seems to be coal.

Dear Mr Michael James, I watch your videos with huge interest and admire your craftsmanship. I understand lime pointing should be used to preserve period properties build with porus bricks or stone work.
However, if someone is rennovating a cheap house made out of sandstone that's valued under £50k, it is not economical to repoint the property with nhl 3.5, so what would you suggest the solution is. It is a question I really wish someone would guide me to the right answer.

      You're wrong in your assumption.

@@sinansalman2847 You've worked out that it's not economical to repoint a house worth 50k. That's an assumption. I think you're wrong. Why do you think it won't be economical?

Because I habe been told that if you use lime to point the outside of a property, you then cannot use gypsum based products like multi finish and plasterboard on the inside and you will end up getting damp.
Secondly, a bad of nhl 3.5 is £12, while a bag of cement is £3, plusevery house on the street is pointed witj cement including chimney and Hip tiles, if one was to remove everything and start again, it would cost a great deal.
I appreciate your guidance Mr James
