One really interesting detail about Alaqua Cox' fighting style in this series - she almost exclusively uses elbow strikes rather than punches, because she relies on ASL to communicate and doesn't want to risk injuring her hands. It's also amazing that this show is her first acting role EVER, and she absolutely nailed it (here and in the Echo series).
So Hawkeye isn't just a show introducing Kate Bishop, it's introducing Maya Lopez aka Echo. In the comics she doesn't have a prosthetic leg but it was incorporated into her character due to Alaqua Cox - who is also deaf - being cast into the role and not having to cgi her prosthetic.
Alaqua Cox did trained extensively in martial arts for her role in “Hawkeye”. So, yeah she knows how to fight and she also performed all her own stunt scenes in the Hawkeye Show.
Such an underrated show. Sure it could have had “more,” but what are we talking about here? The Hawkeye comic this was based on had essentially the same vibe. A character nobody really cared about and gave us a grounded story like we’ve been asking from Marvel which inherently made us care about these stories more!
The show is great but yk what was so flawed and weaker, just didn’t feel like the same thing. Can’t dive into spoilers tho so hopefully yk what I’m talking about.
I love how much this show felt like the Fraction run of Hawkeye. I like that there was a baked in timeframe, the mission wasn’t end of the world stuff, and you got fun character building.
It is so cool that disabilities are being shown more in shows and movies for me. Both in good and bad guy roles! One of the reasons I love Marvel and just a lot of newer series and such is the depth of characters. Just because they're a bad guy doesn't mean they aren't human, with their own hopes, dreams, and experiences. Marvel often nails giving depth for me.
I am just now noticing this re-watching it with you guys.... But the USB arrow played a major role in the "What If" animated Marvel series. What an awesome tie in.
@@chaotic7cam yeah, hawkeye shoots an arrow at the computer console and it plugs into the system and starts messing with the everything. i thought to myself, why would you have that? figured it was just a one off for the movie, but guess not.
@@chaotic7cam i also think it may have been one of the agents of shields writers ideas, they'd do that all through the series. things from season 1 would show up in seasons 5-7.
Echo doesn’t have enhanced senses per se, like Daredevil. In the comics she has no superpowers but she has photographic reflexes which is basically just the ability to mimic others moves like Taskmaster from the Black Widow movie.
Alaqua Cox did her own stunts but is not professionally trained in any martial arts. It is a combination of MMA and various martial arts with her prosthetic leg being part of her badassery. She was just too great a character/actor to not get her own series. I remember fans really pushing for it after this episode and we're only halfway through. Agreed on the not B&E. She has keys to her mom's penthouse. If her mom had her way, she'd be living there under her roof again, lol.
Hawkeye goes to a hearing aid specialist. I’m a hearing aid specialist and it’s so cool to see the stigma of hearing aids going away! Hearing is so important to our cognitive abilities!
I think one of my favorite lines of the series is Clint saying that Natasha killed Ronan because she did; she saved him from being that terrible and violent person. Also the one-shot during the car chase with the swiveling camera is DOPE as hell 😄
Great intro! & although she's a "baddie" I still like Echo's Character & her backstory, that car chase was epic! & it was so cool to see Hawkeye's different kinds of arrows! Great line on the subway scene "we gotta walk the dog" 🐶 it's nice to see a bonding of friendship between Bischop & Clint, that notepad scene was endearing, then they leave us with end like that! & loved the banter between Quinn & Answer, "Tomato, Tomatoe" 🤭🍅
Non-lethal attacks. Shoulder shots and the like. The giant arrow hits the truck, yes, but the back of it. The occupants, though rattled, were not harmed.
@Baddmedicine, ECHO, the series, is great! I hope you watch it right after you finish this--it takes place right after, so why not? From here on out, things are going to ramp up. I guess they have to; this is a 6 episode series =) Buckle up!
The fighting styles and abilities are accurate to the characters. Maya learned how to handle herself in real-world situations against actual threats. Kate competed in martial art tournaments, which is about scoring points based on landing blows, not fighting. That's why Kate put up a fight initially against the tracksuits but ultimately had to flee.
I’m pretty excited that reportedly a second season has been greenlit. I hope it’s true! There was a mixed response to Echo( the series)but I really enjoyed it.
I don’t if you researched Ms. Cox, but as Wisconsinites such as us, I wanted you to know that she is from Menomonee Falls and went to the deaf school in Delavan. Basically, she is a local woman to us.
I don't know much about Alaqua Cox, but I do know this was her first ever acting project. And to date, Maya Lopez is her one and only acting role. As for martial arts training, I want to say she learned while training for this show, but I'm not too sure about that. Because she's so new to the world of acting, there's not much known about her personal life or her life before Hawkeye. So she could very well have martial arts training from before the show.
12:11 since you guys are so excited about grappling hooks, may i suggest you watch an animated tv show called Gravity Falls? It's 2 seasons, 40 episodes total of 20 minutes each One of the main characters adores grappling hooks Just like ATLA it's for kids but also it's so much more mature and it has mystery in it. It also has a grappling hook 😂❤
Have you guys seen Tag or Bourne Legacy yet? Both movies with Jeremy Renner being a complete badass, he actually broke both arms filming Tag and kept on filming after he went to the hospital, he's a machine
I really love this show, it defintely shows the early growing pains of developing MCU TV that... maybe it hasn't quite grown out of just yet, but straight up it had a lot of parts that were a lot of fun. Hoping they get a season 2 and they go more Die Hard with it, like literally just copy Die Hard 2, Kate's stuck at some airport, starts following some sus looking dudes into the back, Hawkeye comes in and takes them all down, but gets distracted by Kate and takes an clean bullet through the leg. Rest of the time Renner can take a breather from the action as he serves at Kate's guy in the chair while she goes about the airport kicking ass. They need to give Bert and Bertie more stuff too, the eps they did were the best.
They actually changed Echo a bit to fit the actress. The character is deaf but they changed her back story for the MCU in making her an amputee as well to fit Ms. Cox.
FYI guys.... Younger Maya is Cox's real little cousin from the same tribe. Hence, the resemblance. First time roles for the both. N Answer! Skip the book. Different tracts for the series.
I actually wouldn't mind if they went straight into Echo right after this show. It makes sense to watch it right after without having to watch all the shows in between.
As someone who's hard of hearing, Echo's character and her discrimination towards treating the loss of hearing is incredibly fucked up and I'm susprised they made a show where she's the main character.
@@vatsalsanwaria537 Imagine watching a show about, I don't know, a guy losing his ability to walk. So he has a cane for example. Then suddenly a supervillain shows up and says "hey, only weaklings use canes, real men crawl if they can't walk" and kicks the cane from his hands and then breaks it into pieces. Some horrific, despicable stuff, right? Then suddenly there's an announcement. There's a new show and your main character is this supervillain!

The Echo series is one of the closest things the MCU has to a masterpiece, and it's crazy that we live in a world where that's a hot take.
One of my favorite parts of it is that they learned how to showcase ASL, which was a weak point in Hawkeye.
