I bought the 2000 LS400 about eight months ago. I paid 3,100 for it.. I think I got a good deal but the brakes seem to be a little too sensitive or more than what I'm used to... You have to take it easy cuz it seems like it goes from not enough to too much very fast..
I bought a 1992 LS400 in 1999 from an elderly gentleman who was getting a new LS. With currently 350,000 km. Other than timing belt, water pump, belt pulley bearings, replaced 2 driver front window motors, upper and lower ball joints mounts and alternator, it never given me any problem. It's very easy to maintain. Still drives the same as in 1999. This is really one of the best and most reliable car ever built.
I bought my 1998 LS400 in 2001 from a dealer as a lease return for $44K with 42000 miles. It had air shocks and navigation system (on the hard drive), upgraded chrome rims and original Lexus sound system that is so much better than Nakamichi or ML upgraded ones. Now 18 years later, the car has 132500 miles, I had to change eventually air shocks for a stock shocks, just because it was too expensive to replace them. I had changed 2 batteries (original Lexus one worked for 9! years), 2 times breaks, every now and then synthetic oil (sticker shows I was due to replace it 4 years ago?), this year I had to replace power steering pump that was slowly leaking, and tires. That is it. It never broke other than when a suspension air bag blew while I was driving on a hwy., which was leaking slowly for some time. Once I had rear ended someone, and insurance wanted to total it, but I declined and fix it. There is no words to describe this car other than "awesome". When I was in the shop, the shop owner told me that he will buy it fron me any time. The other day I parked at the store, and security guard flagged me and asked me if I wanted to sell it, I said no (LOL). He went on to tell me how much he loves it, and is sad that he sold his a while back. I have 2 other Lexuses both 2005, LS430 and LX470 that my daughter and wife driving, but I prefer this one. No desire to own a new car, as this one has everything that I need and then some. An absolutely amazing vehicle!
Love these cars, looks good, drives good, looks gangster, and reliable as hell. Many people dont know, this car a black one was featured in the Sopranos.. Wish I had one, in all black... 👍🏼
Don't make like this anymore, I sold my 97 coach edition back in 2010 and have been kicking my self in the nuts ever since. Quite frankly the best quality car I have ever owned, and that's with 225k miles at the time, everything was tight and the engine was incredible
Know how you feel, I'm on the verge in loosing my 2006 is350 lexus due to insurance write off. Got a brand new VW suv as a rental and the comfort in the Lexus was much better.
Great car. I love mine. I applied Shin-Etsu silicone grease to all of my door and window seals. Made a huge difference in blocking out those higher-frequency outside noises. Also replaced my engine mounts and transmission mount (which were completely separated at 130,000 miles). That made an enormous amount of difference in engine isolation and transmission engagement. Also installed new rear control arms, and new strut rod bushings. Slapped new wheels on and coilovers and the car is now perfect with a more grounded ride, but with a small trade-off on overall smoothness of ride (less float). Also, that loose corner lens should pop in to place with some pressure. It has a little metal prong behind it that snaps into a hole on the fog light lens. If it doesn't want to pop in, back the screw out on the lens, then try to pop it into place and put the screw back in.
FORC3OFX F3AR I purchased the grease in a tube. Looks like a tube of toothpaste. I applied it to door, window, sunroof, hood, and trunk seals. Cleaned the surfaces first, put on some gloves, and applied the grease by hand. I cleaned excess grease with a microfiber.
I think new cars and new technology are cool but something about these early 2000 late 90s cars is just nicer. They are simple, they are very reliable, and if something brakes it's cheape and somewhate easy to fix yourself.

MERCEDESBENZS600 S500 The starter can cost like $1,000 to replace. Also, on the 1999 and 2000 models, if the power tilt function on the steering wheel goes out, you will need to have the steering wheel motor replaced. On the 1998 and older models, they used a worm/gear system for the tilt, which you can fix with a zip tie. Great video, thanks for posting. I used to own one of these fantastic cars. My 1998 LS400 had 260,000 miles when I sold it. I was sorry to see it go as it was a pleasure to drive and a reliable workhorse; reliability is essential if you are self-employed like me. The LS600h and GS450h have a very small boot/trunk, so that put me off buying these models. With good memories of my father's trusty W124 Mercedes, I later bought a 2016 W213 Mercedes E220d SE, impressed by its lovely dual screen display but the Merc suffered from several quality and electronic gremlins and doesn't ride and handle anywhere as nicely as the LS400. I agree that modern cars are too complicated so it's not surprising they have more problems that can be fixed by the main dealer only...but no doubt that's a deliberate part of the new business model.
I would be honored to possess the original example that challenged the status quo of luxury cars. This vehicle delivered fit to finish smoothness that successfully blended the elegance of Mercedes and the performance of BMW. Even though Infiniti rolled the pinball along the trunklines and doors in its commercials, Lexus could balance champagne glasses on its running engine. I think I’d try that too : )
These were so simple, yet such masterfully engineered cars. Benz S-class from the 90s had bulletproof build quality and drove amazingly well, but long-term reliability could never touch this first gen Lexus LS.
Then the build quality is not bulletproof if it's not reliable, the phrase bulletproof always refers to reliability, the material build quality can be high level but that doesn't mean it has bulletproof reliability
Reliability at it's finest when it comes to luxury vehicles, Mercedes S class and BMW 7 series Audi A8 are in the graveyard at this type of mileage most of them, because owners are not going to pay for the high repair cost out of warranty at the dealership, while the Lexus keep on coasting along. The Hyundai Genesis has taken some tips for their Genesis Brand. They are next on the list for high reliability for luxury vehicles.
I've had an LS400. 430 and 460. LS400 had one major design flaw. Power steering fluid well located above alternator. When it leaks it shorts out the alternator. I thought it was just me until I read forums.
In 1995, the LS400 looked similar but was 90% different than its predecessor. It was more aerodynamic, packed with technology, more comfortable and Etc
I'm still saving up to buy this body style. I'm daily driving my 01 ls430 white with gold badge. Also have a 08 ls460 but it's in limp mode. Going to fix this then out hunting for a ls400. Once all three motor is achieve. I'm going to supercharge them. After, I'll be on to S class collection or 7 series......
Just bought a ls400 with 238k on it for 2600, it's a 2000 model with no touch screen. I must of gotten a base model, anyway I love the car to death and will never buy an american car ever again. I will allways own a lexus, fast, reliable, comfortable and just the best damn car I've ever owned. I so want to get rid of my vette and buy another lexus.
I live in the UK so don't mind steering wheel on the right side so I am going to buy Toyota Celsior from Japan as not many good LS400 left in the UK couse people buy them as engine donors for smaller cars. The good ones start going up in the price especially very early ones or later ones 1997-1998 with updated 1uz-fe but before 1999 when they update steering column motor.
I have the same car.. .. I forgot how quiet it used to be.I removed the small mufflers in front of the rear wheels and replaced the rear mufflers with flowmaster 40s.
I used to own one, same color and trim. It was a 98 and you could drive it like a manual. 200k mostly highway miles and leg me tell you those first three gears were fun ;D
I Still Drive My Black 1999 LS400 With 190K Mike's On It As My Daily Driver! The Exterior Still Looks Excellent And The Interior With The Exception Of The Driver's Seat Looks Like New! slim Doc's the 98-00 ls400 were better than the 430s. The 430s were even softer, slower, n bigger. The 400 is def more of a drivers car than the 430. Just food for thought.
Ls. If you want the best ride ever go LS. Back then it really made a difference in what you get. It's like riding on clouds. I have a 2002 ls430 that is insane. I also own a 95 Mercedes s500. Same type of ride.
@@SourGrey the ls430 and any other LS model (400, 460, 500) are all v8 models. This is the top class for Lexus. The best part about the 430 is it gets almost the same gas mileage as the v6 that comes in the GS standard ( there is a v8 option). The v8 model gives you more horse power but mostly more torque.

Watson Lee a lot of the features or standard equipment you see standard in today’s generic grocery getter cars were exclusive standard equipment or expensive options on luxury cars of 20+ years ago. For example a 1992 Mercedes S-Class had power folding mirrors. Now you can get it in the highest trim Kia Rio

So this, a 1990's RWD Cadillac Fleetwood, or a Lincoln Town Car? I'm willing to bet the build quality and longevity of this car is better. But the Ford Panther platform cars are basically like nokia phones, and the Chevrolet small-block V8s in the GM full-size boats can basically run forever.
Nobody is going to take your bet, my friend. EVERYBODY knows that the LS400 absolutely blows away the cars you named in terms of virtually everything, particularly in terms of reliability and build quality. Can’t wait to see u review it on your utube channel 😎
I think I’d try that too : )
Man you making me miss my LS430!
You sold it? Dumbass, lol. Buy another one, best car of all time. Ford CEO in 06 even said so.
Nice review. I had a 1992. Every generation got better and better. In my opinion
You're supposed to pump the music and open the sunroof and windows then enjoy the ride". These are great cars "!🤙🏼
I found a 2000 LS400 with 87k miles and it drives like new. Picking it up tomorrow morning 😀
How's it doing and how many miles?
I've had an LS400. 430 and 460. LS400 had one major design flaw. Power steering fluid well located above alternator. When it leaks it shorts out the alternator. I thought it was just me until I read forums.
These things are surprising fast
In 1995, the LS400 looked similar but was 90% different than its predecessor. It was more aerodynamic, packed with technology, more comfortable and Etc
Great review!
Do u still have the car?
My dad use to have 1996 ls400 and two 1999 ls400
I live in the UK so don't mind steering wheel on the right side so I am going to buy Toyota Celsior from Japan as not many good LS400 left in the UK couse people buy them as engine donors for smaller cars. The good ones start going up in the price especially very early ones or later ones 1997-1998 with updated 1uz-fe but before 1999 when they update steering column motor.
Looking to buy a 97 LS400 in a couple of days. Im psyched!
I have the same car.. .. I forgot how quiet it used to be.I removed the small mufflers in front of the rear wheels and replaced the rear mufflers with flowmaster 40s.
Post an exhaust video
Bought a ls460 fsport with 108k miles runs like new
Loved these cars and my lx570 and rx350 ... was very hard staying awake driving the lx570 the 1k mile trip home no driver effort needed
I got a 2013 LS460 fsport 110k miles I hope it’s just as reliable
I used to own one, same color and trim. It was a 98 and you could drive it like a manual. 200k mostly highway miles and leg me tell you those first three gears were fun ;D
Sad you havent let us see the buttons in the back to adjust the everything and the cooling system
So it is only single pane window and you can hear noise outside?
I Still Drive My Black 1999 LS400 With 190K Mike's On It As My Daily Driver! The Exterior Still Looks Excellent And The Interior With The Exception Of The Driver's Seat Looks Like New!
I Put A Seat Cover On The Driver's Seat That's Almost An Exact Match Of My Tan Interior And It Looks Great.
There Are No Mechanical Issues And My Mechanic Says That I Should Never Get Rid Of It! I'm Going To Drive It Until The Wheels Fall Off!
Talking About 22 Year's Of Excellent Reliability And I Get Around 29.3MPG On My Trips From Northern California To Los Angeles! It's Still An Amazing Vehicle 22 Year's After The Fact.
I Just Keep Up The Maintenance, Keep It Polished And The Interior Clean, And Get A Ton Of Compliments On How New It Still Looks Inside And Out!
Lexus Forever Baby! ✌️
that's awesome! How's the car doing and what company did you go with for the seat cover?
I want one actually the LS 430
slim Doc's the 98-00 ls400 were better than the 430s. The 430s were even softer, slower, n bigger. The 400 is def more of a drivers car than the 430. Just food for thought.
john denver you rite but the 430 looks good tho
I just traded my 01 ls430 in and want to buy it back. I miss it. Best car i have owned.
@@chrisoconnor3119 get the 06
I have a LS 400 1998 and the reverse is gone out and it will drive in neutral what could the problem be
That's the car I m looking for❤

Hilarious at 6:00 when you just *have* to fix that light in the back, OCD! Haha ;- )
Beauty!
There is one for sale in my country with 119k miles
*Intechdude300* What would it cost to refurbish or freshen up this car, in your opinion?
❤ your videos! 👍
Your reviews are fantastic and you know a ton! You should do more :-)
I have a 99 Toyota Avalon xls. Side by side you can see the similarities
Give us some throttle response shots from the pedal along with exhaust clips in all upcoming videos!

I own Gs400 98 with 206k miles.

Works as new
I got 99 gs300 ..370K miles....smooth as silk.
I just found a one owner 99 one with only 24k original miles and I want it so bad
I'll take it if you don't want it.
Awhile ago there was a early 2000's LS430 with only 16k miles available.
where?
Can we swap ls1 in ls400 ?
يالله ياربيي ترزقني مثلها بمووت 😻💙
سمو سبيع Smo ,tube l الله يرزقك نفسها واحسن منها 🙌🏾🖤
ربي يطول فعمرك عيني
Do you guys recommend the GS or LS
Ls. If you want the best ride ever go LS. Back then it really made a difference in what you get. It's like riding on clouds. I have a 2002 ls430 that is insane. I also own a 95 Mercedes s500. Same type of ride.
@@petescarport ok but some say the V8 but many say the 6cyl. what engine was proper?
@@SourGrey the ls430 and any other LS model (400, 460, 500) are all v8 models. This is the top class for Lexus. The best part about the 430 is it gets almost the same gas mileage as the v6 that comes in the GS standard ( there is a v8 option). The v8 model gives you more horse power but mostly more torque.
@@petescarport any specific year better then another? Im looking for in gray or white. I have a 1 our commute usually, so need to try something else my 1.5liter hybrid Toyota is getting tired at 400k miles...
@@SourGrey anything before 2003 when they introduced the 6 speed closed transmission. The prior transmission was indestructible. It's the same transmission that was in the million mile car you see all over RUclips. I'm a fan of the ls400 but the 430 has more modern features and style.
I Have 1997 Lexus LS400
Is that Matt Farah’s million mile Lexus?
darude- sandstorm
Says 240,000 miles doesn't it. LONG way from a million.
He has a '96.
I want it with manual :'(
Double paned glass? Mazda has that standard on the new CX-5 and CX-9!!! Heard it's quieter than some BMW X3 and Lexus NX?
Watson Lee a lot of the features or standard equipment you see standard in today’s generic grocery getter cars were exclusive standard equipment or expensive options on luxury cars of 20+ years ago. For example a 1992 Mercedes S-Class had power folding mirrors. Now you can get it in the highest trim Kia Rio
@@Intechdude300 lol oh nice ☺️
She’s mint bud... I don’t care what they say
Reliability is BETTER than the Camry
Aren’t these L bad because it’s a V8? Was stared away from a 06 bc of V8 engine, told V6 but not 8.
tail lights were changed in 95. just my 2c lol
I have a 92 ES300 with manual transmission and 136k and bought it for $600...I know I'm lucky 😁
Thank you.
It is the best! No one can match it. Japanese reliability!
I see these reliable cars always on sale on Facebook why sell such a legendary car man 😂 id buy like 3 rn if i had the money like my dad tho he bought 3 4runner and i want jdm beasts
How much this car
You live in Lake Mary?
So this, a 1990's RWD Cadillac Fleetwood, or a Lincoln Town Car? I'm willing to bet the build quality and longevity of this car is better. But the Ford Panther platform cars are basically like nokia phones, and the Chevrolet small-block V8s in the GM full-size boats can basically run forever.
Nobody is going to take your bet, my friend. EVERYBODY knows that the LS400 absolutely blows away the cars you named in terms of virtually everything, particularly in terms of reliability and build quality. I see them every single day driving around where i live. Those other cars you name, no. Very rare to see one driving around.
Lincoln town cars actually are pretty damn reliable too but is hands down much rather have the LS, the other two are so outdated looking
Adam's World Productions Yeah, these cars put the panther platform cars of same years to shame in every way. Even near 30 years later. Buy one n find out for urself.
Are you driving in Austin?
I think it's Central Florida
3:30 he said the basic bitch model 😂😭😭
Does the 98 and 99 have the same body style as this 2000???
MERCEDESBENZS600 S500 should i look into 2000. Ls. With 160k
jared dixon Most definitely, see if you can take it to a mechanic to look it over or bring one with you...
MERCEDESBENZS600 S500 if you can go with the 99, that one is more reliable and had vvti (variable valve timing)
now the w222 has all the luxury car brand scared.
Is the LS430 as big as this car???
MERCEDESBENZS600 S500 lil bit bigger
The ls 430 is slightly bigger & more powerful
I just bought one a 99 with 145k for 1000
You stole it
Thats a good deal !
No way…WOW!!
Unos delo mas vedidos
Lexus is best
Lake Mary to 434 cruise
Love my 96 and less then 240k
