Back in the day I owned a 1982 Starlet. I loved everything about it except the name. It was well-built, reliable, economical, fast, maneuverable and simply fun to drive. The Starlet had a 5-speed manual gearbox with overdrive, so it would happily cruise down the Interstate all day at over 70 mph. It was so maneuverable that it could do a U-turn in the width of a New York City street, which I know for a fact because Ive actually done it. This was also the last car I ever owned that' had a hand-choke, which meant that I never had any trouble starting it, even in the coldest weather. I used to work in the merchant marine, and sometimes I would lay up the Starlet for months while I was at sea. The only thing I did to it before I left was to disconnect the battery cables. When I came home I would re-connect the battery, pull out the choke, and it would start immediately on the first flip, every time. To put this car into perspective, with their Starlet, Toyota demonstrated exactly how to build a small, economical and reliable rear-wheel-drive hatchback while, with their dismal Chevette, GM demonstrated exactly how NOT to do the same thing.

I had an '81 model purchased in about 1987. I drove it in high school and in college in a mountain area. I liked the 5-speed transmission. Mine had little flap rear side windows that could be set in an open position. This allowed for excellent airflow on a hot day or summer night. I could easily fit three friends plus myself in the car. The back seat folded down allowing the car to move an incredible amount of stuff. My girlfriend at the time had one too. She scolded (coached) me on exactly when to shift gears on the curvy roads near her home. I drove the car until the engine gave out and have been reminiscing about it ever since.

First new car I purchased off the lot in 1982. It had a manual choke knob on the dash. My girlfriend borrowed it, forgot to push in the choke, and stalled in traffic until an old timer came to the rescue by reaching in the window and pushing the choke back in. She started it and drove off.

I had the KP60 station wagon, 1982 model, sky blue, 2K motor, 1000cc, 4 speed manual. My favourite car ever. I miss it. I had to sell it because of financial struggles. I haven't regretted anything more in my life.

I had an '82 Starlet. I abused that car so badly using it more like a truck than a car.
I'd cruise with 3 bicycles on the roof rack and the back full of merchandise. I was afraid the tiny 145r13 tires would pop under the load so I replaced them with 165r13. By the time I got to 150k miles the engine was so loose that it sounded like a diesel but it never let me down. My U-joint started knocking and living in an apartment I couldn't fix it myself so I took it to a shop. The mechanic must have thought it was a Tercel. I told him my U-joint was knocking and he corrected me that my car was FWD so it had CV-joints not U-joints. I corrected him that it was RWD and had U-joints. He informed me that he had been a mechanic for a long time and knew the difference between RWD and FWD so I said, OK, than replace the CV-joint and let me know when it was done. Unfortunately he wasn't there when I picked up my car. My car never let me down but it was totaled by a hit-and-run driver at 172K miles; were it not for the accident no telling how long the tough little car would have lasted. I had to fix the brakes a few times but it had the original clutch until it was totaled. Thanks for the memories.

You just cant find a Starlet in THAT condition. They are 1 in a million! I have a 'simple car', like that.
Manual windows, drop the back seat easily, tons of headroom, nothing power, except the steering/brakes. No overstuffed seats, power everything, 'infotainment systems', none of that crap. Just like the Starlet. And it has a lighter and ashtray. Not to be used, but it has them. It is a simple car. but not as nice and simple and reliable as this Toyota.
And THAT Toyota was built in Japan! Not Tenn. or where ever they are built now. Real metal, little plastic, love the pop out side rear windows, IF I could find one in 90% of that good shape, here in Fla. I would buy it in a flash!

Everything about this was embarrassing except for the car.

  • @outerlimitsurvey

My first car was a '73 Ford LTD, my 2nd car was a '77 Honda Civic, my 3rd car was a white '82 Toyota Starlet that looked just like the video except with the OEM wheels. I can give some more background on the model. Toyota thought that the Tercel was the best sub-compact car on the market but it was outsold by the Chevy Chevette which Toyota considered to be only one step above a garden tractor. The Tercel was expensive compared to the Chevette. To compete with cheap sub-compact cars Toyota cobbled together the Starlet. Remember the Starlet sold for under $4,000 which would be under $10,000 in today's dollars. I didn't have a single breakdown until after 100k miles. I blew one head gasket, replaced one U joint, and the brakes and air conditioner needed some repairs but it was always reliable enough to drive across the country without a worry. I got it to 172k miles on the original clutch before it was totaled by a hit-and-run driver. Gosh I miss that ugly little car.

In japan yes it ran for those years but in the US it ran for only ran for three years. The correla was took the lead. The starlet was a second thought to replace the correla..never happened.
