    As someone who grew up eating fu yu (fermented tofu), I’m kinda offended by the misrepresentation of this ingredient. Firstly, this isn’t stinky tofu. They’re 2 different ingredients that are used very differently. Second, fu yu is not meant to be eaten by itself. It’s meant as seasoning and is often used as a base to sauces. What she did was the same as eating a spoonful of fish sauce or marmite.

      Actually, it depends.... I'd really saw someone from the northern part of china eaten it by raw. I was super shocked as its too salty for me. And the one in this TV show is really stinky fu yu. There are 2 different fu yu. You can search online and will able to find it.

    Have never seen that type of fermented tofu being eaten raw like that before 😶. I've always used it mashed up with minced garlic and cooked as a sauce base. Stinky tofu is usually a deep fried street food , and is made of larger pieces that isn't so soft...

    • @blackassassinknight
      @blackassassinknight Год назад +2

      theres actually different types of stinky tofu hahahaha, the soft fermented one that's like a curd is beijing style in this video is usually eaten with porridge and the taste is pretty similar to the duck eggs but the texture is way softer. The deep fried street food one your think about is more popular in taiwan as a street snack but smells exponentially worse because it is deep fried

      @@blackassassinknight um, re-read the first part of my post. I have a jar of the soft kind in my fridge right now, but we call it "fu-yu". The street food kind, which is more commonly called "stinky tofu" is "chap tofu"

      @@blackassassinknight k, I was rushing to work with that last reply. I was just saying I'd never seen it before, not that it wasn't a thing. But with porridge would be different then straight up, right? Wouldn't it be like the century eggs, where they're gross by themselves but delicious in congee? I was using some tonight and I checked the jar (craving despite the reaction on the video). Looks like the English name for the soft jar type is "wet bean curd"😂

      @@chip7486 I think it makes a smell a bit less intense hahahaha but I always dunk the tofu in my porridge vs eating it straight up and then eating a spoonful of porridge although my parents did enjoy it by itself so maybe not loooool 🤣

    Fermented tofu is like a strong, stinky cheese. I’m Southeast Asian Chinese and I have it with plain congee

    Wow she put a whole block of fermented tofu in her mouth😮 I don’t know what kinda of chef she is but 腐乳 is not stinky tofu. You don’t eat it straight up like this. Use it in stir fry dishes or eat it with plain rice congee. And what she says about dark soy sauce is also wrong, dark soy sauce has flavor too, it‘s less salty and a bit sweet.

    When my mom makes sweet and sour pork, we use haw flakes for the sauce as well. It adds a unique flavor that is sweet and sour, and it tastes amazing! However, I think this is only for the Cantonese style, because I think the Northern style doesn't use it.

    Yeah, This is misinterpreted so bad. First of all, you obviously don't know what you are talking about. It is fermented tofu. It is usually very salty and you should not eat it in one bite like that. This snippet just insults Chinese culture. You're supposed to have little bites or sampling with plain rice congee or rice.
