- ITS ALL GONE... Well, almost.
G'day, lets explore whats left of the Beaudesert Railway.
Opened in 1888, the Beaudesert Railway was an integral part of the expansion of the Scenic Rim area.
The last Queensland Rail train ran in 1996.
Theres still some track, if you know where to look. most of the bridgework is hidden from view and overgrown.
I hope you enjoy watching this episode as much as I did creating it.

Good work Pete! And the drone footage is extremely well done. Great to see more people doing local history content.
I'm on the work crew that maintains the grass on sections on the line on a semi regular basis. They are lifting the whole line for a conversion to a “Rail Trail" for walking and riding. With the lifting starting about than 6 months ago.
Housing developments going on around Beaudesert I'm told + existing housing developments around Logan Village. Thus line & formation should be mothballed for a future passenger feeder line to Bethania. However a retirement village was built on top of the formation at Waterford, go figure. Politicians can see past the next election cycle.
Five million was spent prior to the year 2001 Centenary of Federation. They ran steak train trips until farmers were complaining about grass fires so it was closed. The six fully maintained Rail Motors at Ipswich could have been used but Newman ripped up the level crossings and now it's a multi million dollar job
Totally agree...
Yeah yeah and the 100 others needed and are coming in the future 🤦 reality check tho we're not safe in our house's and the ppl in charge don't fucking care
The line should actually even be extended up to Cairns and down to the Gold Coast
Nice video. I was lucky enough to drive stock trains to Beaudesert with Qld Rail until it closed in 1995.
There are rumours about the line going back to Beaudesert in the future travelling via the interstate line to Just south of Kagaru cross country to Veresdale then following the old line into Beaudesert (see tmr website Salisbury - Beaudesert rail corridor study).
We had something like that here in Mackay. Mackay and most of North Queensland didn’t get hooked up till the mid 1920’s. So first of all a railline was set up going through the pioneer valley in the 1870’s and 80’s to transport sugar from the plantations. It was still Cape Gauge like the rest of Qld till the 90’s and when sections started getting sold to the mill. My grandmother used to catch a train upto the Finch Hatton show on it. Unfortunately the line was sold to the mills and switched to 2ft Cane Train Lines. We ran the last steam train in Queensland in Mackay and now there’s a BB18 Quarter class sitting there mostly restored waiting to be fired up again
@uncle7162 Those BB18 1/4 locos were sold to Downssteam in Toowoomba 2 years ago. One is operating under its own power and the other is yet to be transferred and restored. My godfather Bob Duvelle worked at the Mackay Heritage Railway project for 25 years until his death 3 years ago on 1079.
Surely it be able to better serve the growing community if it came in a little further noth to service Flagstone and Jimboomba as well. If it were to do this, it would help make it more financially feasible as the large and growing population in those suburbs would increase passenger numbers.
I live at Woodhill not far from the line. The track was only lifted about six months ago down this way. Sad to see another line fade into history.
I drove out that way to Wyaralong a couple weeks back and noticed all the rail bridges had been gated.
Times change, they use to have the track up within 6 to 24 months after they closed a line.
Thank-you Pete. I live at Tamborine. I have an avid interest this historic local line. I have searched google earth and visited most of the spots featured in your video. Beaudesert council have torn up the historic railyard and most of the livestock pens for "local improvement"...unfortunately. To me this feels like a disrespect for our predecessors. Thankfully the station is still there for now. The drone views offer a very nice perspective. Cheers and thanks Pete, Brad.
Considering the increasing urban spread along the corridor south towards Beaudesert, I have always thought that it was very short sighted of the State Government not to upgrade the Beaudesert Railway into a commuter line, reducing road traffic from the nearby highway. They built a brand new line to Springwood and built a long overdue line to Redcliffe. Why not Beaudesert?
Springfield NOT Springwood
You're right. I don't know why I typed in Springwood. Thanks for correcting me, even if it is a bit embarrassing. But the thought is still the same.
Because we do things backwards in this country. We'll put in thousands of homes and worry about the issues of roads and rail 15 years after it becomes a problem
With the way Brisbane is expanding the corridor will eventually be needed again for an urban passenger service
It won't be the same alignment, the plan is to break off the interstate line and join the Beaudesert line at Veresdale.
Thanks for that video Peter ,I worked on Beaudesert Rail back then , worked on the steam engine , carriages and the station also did the flagman at the road crossings from Beaudesert to Bethania
Good Work Pete ... cheers a little bit of memory ...
I've been looking for more videos of these. Thanks for this.
Thank you for posting 👍👍
Very relaxing video, the nature scenery out their looks unreal, it would be fun to walk the line complety on the tracks
Stumbled across your video, and surprised to get local content. Was even more surprised how professional the production was, well done.
Awesome video I didn't know I needed to watch. Thank you for your part in preserving this local history. I can't believe I've been looking at all parts of this line for almost 30 years.
It looks like most of the land is still reserved. As Brisbane inevitably expands It may want to reestablish some of these old rail lines.
However I see in some places there are houses close by and it is very narrow (1 Track). So a railway on this land would upset those people living close by.
Very professional looking video - well done!
I Deliver goods to various Fire stations in Logan and the scenic and these places are just behind the bushes at various places of drive on an almost daily basis.
Thanks for showing me what i never see. it gives me a historical perspective on things. Also i grew up visiting the Chullora yards in nsw regularly with my uncle as a kid im, fascinated by old rail
Salisbury to Beaudesert will be the replacement, in 2040 so they say.
Another corridor they will regret removing
Great content Mate, loving it!!!
The old Logan Village railway station building is beautifully restored by my brother, found at Barney Creek Vineyard Cottages. It's a couples retreat, along with 3 other restored buildings
Thanks for the comment, I found that out a couple of months ago. It’s on our list to visit.
Great video mate.
Sad it's all going
There is practically no transport infrastructure to Beaudesert at all now. About one and a half to two hours south of Brisbane and about one and a half hours to the Gold Coast. Great historical doco.
beautiful drone footage and music! all i could suggest is perhaps some maps (openmaps?) context.
would love to see a similar attempt for the Dayboro line if you were looking for another line to trace.
Cheers =)
Thanks for the feed back, it’s still a hobby at the moment, I’m still working 60+ hours a week. Maps and overlays are things I’m learning about now.
Well done Pete great Vid Shall look forward to seeing more from you
It's a sad sight to see an abandoned track in the middle of nowhere. Forgotten. As a kid, being driven past some of these old lines I think about what it was like with the trains still running along them. Personally, I think they should fully dismantle the lines or put them in some historical protection scheme.
Such huge potential for tourists --------------------
Enjoyable video Pete. I attempted to follow and photograph the Fassifern Valley rail line Boonah and Mount Edwards line) but very little evidence remains other than a couple of buildings and the earthworks, No tracks or sleepers remain. There is a short walking track from above the visitor info centre in Boonah to Podock Rd called the Rail Trail that goes through some interesting cuttings.
That was very interesting. I have often driven to Beaudesert and observed the remaining bridges visible from the road. Thankyou for filling in the gaps.
Very nice footage mate. Great job. :)
I live in Jimboomba and they have recently ripped up the tracks going through the town , nice drone shots of the town
So sad to see such short sighted tunnel vision. In another 100yrs personal private transport will either be illegal or impractical and all this infrastructure will have to be rebuilt for mass transport.
At least the corridor still exists so there is hope in the future, with cross river rail, that plans to rebuild the line can move ahead.
The current proposal is totally different path and origin, from Salisbury, instead of Bethania, unfortunately..
Thanks mate, brilliant video. Live in beauy myself only wish I lived in those simpler times
Nice camera work, particularly with the drone. Looking forward to the forthcoming Canungra episode mate.
Considering the amount of vehicular traffic between Brisbane & Beaudesert, It is imperative that this line is rebuilt and opened up to the public!
As the governments want us to go "green" and use public transport, then this railway line and others around the State must be reopened as the best alternative option.
Enjoyed the video.
Loved this video, very well done, I had no idea there was so much infrastructure still remaining, I have gotten so used to seeing everything ripped up and torn down!
You have earned another sub mate 😁
Great video 👌🏻
I remember telling a local politician that at least it should be turned into a bike rail trail , he replied there are talks of reinstating the track possibly with a tram car
It could re-open as a tourist railway with a little bit of work !
The line apparently also in the earlier years went on to canungra from logan village also but there isnt much info on it and it was pulled up a long time ago. There is evidence of rail bridges on private property across the albert river down before tambourine village
Always makes me sad seeing old rails that have been shut down. In some cases it feels kind of short sighted and others its kind of a death knell for an entire region on top of the general loss of history.
Really great mini documentary well done.
You may like to film the North East Tasmanian Railway. Coldwater Creek to Scottsdale and Herrick.
Rails still there to Scottsdale.
G’day Pete, it’s Pete here! Yep we share the same name mate and I think this video is great. I have just come across your channel on my RUclips feed and have already subscribed to it. I am a keen rail enthusiast and feel sad that one stupid state government after another has closed so many rail lines throughout Queensland. I noticed that you received a recommendation from walkabout with Rob and that should mean a lot as his videos are also excellent. Cheers Pete and go well mate.
I've often wondered why, at Jimboomba, a new bridge over the railway formation, for the Mt Lindsay hwy service road, was built? The bridge was built years after the closure of the line. If the line was never intended to re-open, then filling in the cutting would have made more sense, than a bridge, which will require maintenance in the future.
Rail trail in replacement.
Hey Pete i am from NSW when i watched the video first thought i had in mind was if there was a club or a group what you could do is restore and rebuild the longest piece of the line where the bridges are get a couple of locomotive's and build a engine shed at one end to store them and offer rides to the general public up and down on some of the line like what they have done here at the ZIGZAG railway i am sure family and kids would love that experience and it would keep some of the line from being demolished if i had the money i would be the first person to come up and make that happen just a thought
i hope the QR keep those lines i tact for future housing developments soon just like they closed the dayboro track!
right now while im watching this, the sub count is at 999
time to be the 1000th sub
fellow Queenslander here
Congratulations…
This is the first ive heard of this line. Such a crying shame that near sighted politicians have decided to rip up all the old lines. Imagine how much better our public transport would be if all the old rail lines were somehow magically restored. Imagine also if from beaudesert, the line was extended just a little further west to link up with the main line at bromelton.
I’d imagine that if the rail line ran along Camp Cable rd, It is likely that the Americans built a siding to service Camp Cable during WW2.
Thanks Pete for posting this interesting bit of local Qld history. I am from the Blue Mountains in NSW but I lived in Southport as a kid during WW !1 and I remember the train from Southport use to past though Beaudesert on the way to Brisbane and I am wondering if the railway you show here was part of the original Southport line?
The Beaudesert line 'spurred' off from near Beenleigh. The line never ran form Southport to Beaudesert.
It's a short sighted disgrace that this line has been decommissioned. The state government is happy to have tens of thousands of people move to the Beauy/Jimboomba area, but have done zero to cater for moving those people around.
As a New South Wales resident I ask, could the standard gauge line be utilized to servise sections of the area?
The standard gauge line does pass near beaudesert, a few kilometres west of it: at bromelton. SCT has an inter-modal yard there. This is also where one of the proposed terminus is for the Inland Rail.
SO SAD an indication where we are going.
Pity Govt Ever did away with Railways
again they build these lines then they close them
No one lives out that way just ask the government besides it would cost to much to fix up and we need the money for the Olympic stadiums
Was there ever any rail line out to Rathdowney?
Thanks for the comment. It was considered a tramway. Stay tuned for that one…
It was actually a "Tramway" Same as the one to Canungra was a "Tramway"
HEY go do something about its jobs clean up cut up grass Off railway rail lines mowers lawn railway and fixed up rails Line need steam engine Train come back On rails Line ohhhh yeahhhh yes come on
What about making it a rail trail ?
