So the Msrp or the 400x is $5,595 but both triumph dealers in the Seattle area are charging for shipping and other handling fees that brings the out the door price to almost $8k. How is that an affordable option?
I started riding a motorcycle mid year 2023 because I wanted something to take my mind away , engage me in the moment and provide a bit of entertainment. I wouldn’t change to an electric bike because there is not clutch, no gear, no cool noise and no shacking that gives me feedback. If short trip commuting, I’d take advantage of bike lanes and have an electric bicycle. I need the experience out of my biking time and electric doesn’t do it
My Zero SR/S is my favorite motorcycle of all that I've owned, beating out Gold Wing, FJR1300, Burgman 650 (a close second), Tracer, Africa Twin, Multistrada... But your points are valid, particularly that every one who wants and can afford one, already have one. The buyers are drying up.
Even though I had wanted an EV car for over ten years before I finally bought a Tesla model 3 in 2018, it was because they still weren't good enough, or they were good but too expensive for me. So I appreciate Lance's decision to wait. I'm waiting for the 450-750 Wh/kg batteries to become available (next 3-5 years?), then EV bikes will be like the Tesla, blowing away many of the gas bikes, I'll buy one and never look back. Swappable is good for city commuters. Great show, like Zach I'm excited to see the CFMOTO 450 MT.
1:40:00 this just all sounds like semantics. If a battery can be easily removed it can be made "swappable". It's a case of infrastructure, the first step surely would be to make the battery removable, as the infrastructure isn't currently there and would be very costly it makes sense to allow owners to charge the battery at home. Then start rolling our battery swap locations. Then users can do both.
Kinda like how gas barbecues came with a propane cylinder that you were supposed to refill whenever it ran out. Then someone got the idea of having an exchange system where you drop off your empty and pick up a different - but full - bottle. And hope the new tank isn't a rusted piece of crap with a leaky valve (the equivalent of which will still be a worry for battery exchanges, I suspect.) Then hook up the gas to the grill and get to cooking again.
I've owned a Lightning Strike C for a full year now. It's hands down the best bike i've ever ridden and I love it. That said, until the big companies leverage their production capability and distribution networks I'm not sure the EV bike segment will grow much. It's really a shame, but i'm happy Kawasaki is at least dipping a toe in. It's true that the pool of buyers is small right now.
This is a great kick-off for season 8! My biggest excitement is the Kawi Ninja 7 Hybrid. Finally, we have "arrived in the future!" As a former, big city, freeway commuter for more than 40 years, this is what I needed and wanted all that time! You did not mention that this is a parallel-type, full hybrid: very important. Riders will be able to select full battery use for riding out of the neighborhood quietly and commuting to work, in the morning, and either returning home or taking a ride through the twisty canyons using ICE and or battery. Then return home and do it all over again the next day! Of course, your mileage may vary.... But wow! What nice options we will have. Even Lance agreed that a commuter could like this bike!!
The tricky thing about the motocompacto is that it's competition is those electric standup "razor" style scooters. It allows you to not have to walk the last few miles to the office, but as Lance mentioned not everyone has an office job anymore.
Glad you mentioned the Honda Hornet in the "we're not worthy" category. Mostly these type of bikes would be considered low volume for the US market but that's not the case with the Hornet which should be high volume here. At this point I've given up and gave Suzuki my business and while I might have gotten a better bike in the end the Hornet would have been my first choice and I'm dying to know why we've been excluded from purchasing this model? Seriously, just knowing why would give me a lot of satisfaction!
35:00 I am also on the highside for CFMoto. If nothing else they are raising the bar for standard features ie. adjustable suspension and cruise control. Let’s see a 800 DR along with the 450. Thanks!
I was drawn to the whole electric motorcycle thing. I was so close to getting a Livewire, but the cost to ride basically around town at that price stopped me. I have two gas motorcycles in the garage already and now added an electric bicycle. It costs much less. No vehicle registration and in my city that has extensive bike paths is a joy to ride across town. Also, parking is free and convenient. It just made more sense. . .
1:02:00 oh no they doubled down. Sure you can throw a ton of power on a standard and compare it to a weaker sport… but I guarantee you an s1000RR will smoke the standard model. Also sport bikes are just cooler. Nothing turns heads like a sport bike and I know first hand because every time I go on group rides with my friends, people only stare at mine.
I couldn’t disagree more , most sportbikes look the same , and it’s ALL feathers, it’s the last bike I check out in a group and many more like me , but I get it you are cool. lol
I love Lance, but I am on Spurgeon 's side on batteries. All moto groups need to find one battery! Let's take a hobby that has worked with batteries is RC community. One battery! All companies need to put all eggs into one battery. So all motorcycles can pull up and change fuel source with seconds of wait time and move on. Just me?
I've been interested in the energica experia, but it never seems to make it into your electric mc discussions. While still pricey, it seems to be making steps in the right direction - more mileage and faster charging. I know they don't seem to have much of a dealer network ,which might affect availability, but i keep hoping to see one on daily rider.
Back! Wonderful surprise, made my day. Prefect timing, I was already in the shop getting things ready today, weather says riding season kicks off next week here in Ontario Canada.
I was listening on Spotify and had to come here to say this… I am totally on Spurg’s wavelength when it comes to the XSR900 GP. I had a Gen1 XSR900 and it was awesome, been kicking around getting the new one, but I’m holding out for the GP. Such a cool bike and I’m going to be extremely disappointed if it doesn’t make its way to the US.
Zack, Spurge, AND Lance! We are back full throttle for season 8, lets GO! Will Spurge trade Sally the Rally for Daniella Ducati - Rallye!? Glad to see Zack moved out of the garage. I know ADV's are more function over form but I think the Transalp is one of the better looking bikes of the group. I would want to say I'd add the GS but I think its too much bike for me so thinking I'd take the more manageable Transalp. I would be all too happy to add the Aprillia 457 to my garage! When its comes to standards I would have a tough time picking between the Speed and the Scrambler by Triumph, accept no substitutes lol. So would the Speed 400 be better if we let Bruce turbo it? I believe that was I who said it would have been good to also have the Himalayan 450 alongside the Triumph 400's on that trip. That new BMW cruiser looks good, kinda like a blend of the Indian Scout and the FTR. I like the DSRX as well reminds me of the new Moto Guzzi Mandello. Spurge and Lance should do the Dumb and Dumber ride on a Moto Compacto! I would go with R.E. Meteor 650, think thats gonna be a solid and fun bike. Definitely a twin with a pipe, maybe a V-Strom for Spurgeon the Senior? OK little off but I know because I almost bought one for my first bike that is a Honda Shadow Phantom, great hint from Chase there. Or not, wrong on all counts, my losing streak continues. Glad to have you back for another season Old Sports, see you two!
I gotta say, I'm with Lance on the idea of a hybrid motorcycle. A lot of complexity and weight for... The ability to putt around a city a tiny bit with the electric drivetrain? And you still have to keep it supplied with gas and deal with that maintenance? Fuel efficiency isn't really a prime concern for motorcycles anyway, the main benefits of an electric motorcycle are the lack of maintenance and the ability to charge it at home, not that it might be more efficient in low speed situations... If you still have all the gas bike maintenance and have to put gas in it like a regular bike, *plus* it's more expensive than a comparable non-hybrid bike and is higher maintenance, what's the point?
man, the entire sport bike discussion's only mention of an actual honest motorcycle for sporting purpose was one throwaway comment about a cbr600rr and another passing mention of an rs457, what has the world come to... i love the crossovers but im not sure we needed 20 mins on them! gsx8r anyone?? the zx6r got a revamp too, wheres that! anyone lucky enough to touch an rc8c? daytona660???? helloooooo??? anyone home??
I wouldn't call the Daytona 660 a sportbike... I'm pretty sure we discussed the fact that it's not a Daytona 675 by a long shot. OR maybe that was another upcoming episode... Or maybe it was just IG Live.... Damn us, we're creating too much motorcycle content to keep it all straight.... Either way, long live the original Daytona 675...
@@spurgeondunbar879 completely agree, and if it's in a future ep, hooray! but i didn't hear it here, and it would've been a nice sportbike discussion to have, at least. it's probably going to get raced against rs660s and r7s, so any sportbike category that includes crossovers and excludes actual racing machines is not one I'd subscribe to personally.
Completely agree man. This podcast is alright but they never talk about sport bikes and they clearly don’t understand their appeal. I mean to say an hour in that standard bikes are now sport bikes because they go fast is just a fucking joke.
No if it’s not a full fairing, forward leaning bike, it’s not a sport bike! No the speed triple RS is not a sport bike! The non RR models are not sport bikes!
No mention of the new Sherco 500cc dual sport aimed squarely at KTM's 500excf? No mention of Beta's debut in pro supercross? I'm 45minutes in and they're switching to sportbike discussion, I guess I'll see if they mention something about them toward then end.
Spurge, you made multiple comments about bikes from Japan and Europe that don't make it to America. I have the same frustrated feelings about this but most people just laugh it off if the subject happens to come up. Obviously, there are reasons manufacturer's restrict global distribution of their products, but really what is the reason? Money most likely. Personally, I feel somewhat offended when other markets get what we can't have, the Africa Twin comes to mind. I don't ride off-road much, but on the street at least where I live, I only see 2 types of bikes. Sport bikes, and HD's. That's pretty much it. And these are the bikes I have absolutely no interest in. Europe and other major markets seem to embrace a much wider variety of motorcycles than America. So, maybe they're just afraid of not being able to sell any substantive numbers here.
We do miss out on a lot of other (cheap) bikes due to regulations on emission and safety in Europe. Can't buy a bike without ABS here, I think linked brakes are still allowed for certain classes.
I am so excited for another season. An episode I would like to see is one about which vintage motorcycles are good models to buy and get running. For example, I really enjoy first generation Honda Goldwings, 1975-1979, but they are terrible bikes to be the first vintage you should own. A simpler air cooled motorcycles without points such as the Kawasaki kz750's is a better choice for first vintage bike. I think this would be a good discussion with Ari, or maybe the silver fox again. I am so glad you are back, and congrats Spurge on the marriage!
I’m excited about the Triumph 400s (the 400x including), and wonder how long they’ll make the Speed Triple 1200 RR…love that bike, use it for track mostly, and sadly not selling well. Re dirt bikes on forest roads: big issue in NJ Pinebarrens. IMO just charge a small fee for entry, use it to maintain environment and track.
I am currently at 2:12:35 in the vid and with the tips provided and using the information gained from an old SRK Motorcycles vid, I am guessing that the mystery motorcycle is a Honda Shadow RS (which I actually want due to said mentioned video). What is everyone else's guess?
Love hsls...❤😂 there is a rev. Engine that you guys missed the boat!!. There was an inline 4 kawasaki. It was a zr7s. It was not the regular z series.. it was a sport touring bike. Just to let you know.. it is definitely a bike sold in the USA. Only know. Because I have one!!
@@michaelskinner896 yah, seems like other markets already have them listed on Honda’s market specific sites. Even Canada who apparently got last years model! I don’t understand why they wouldn’t announce it officially so we can all stop wondering
Your “bikes we don’t get” episode should be a bit of a competition, with the number one (loser) ranking going to the manufacturer that keeps the most away.
A little of education for my dear and appreciate Revzilla friends/host: The first sport-touring motorcycle (up-right style) was not the Multistrada. It was the Yamaha TDM but never land in USA. Yamaha end the production of the TDM and re-design the model using the MT09 engine and chassis as a platform.
I feel like something slow down the electric bike industry because companies can make very good bikes but they don't,in vehicle industry elon boom the car industry thats why companies keep going with electric vehicles.but there are some very good bikes like KTM freeride, energica esse esse, live wire But unfortunately big company don't want to deliver good electric motorbikes.
Around 2010-2012 I worked with a guy who had the same bike as I did at the time, a first-gen V-Strom 650. In 2013-14 we both got new bikes. I bought a Tiger 800 and he bought an NT700V. One ride on his bike made me realize I made the right choice. However, you'd think with that being the Hawk GT engine, you could make it feel and sound more interesting.
On the topic of new bikes I’m excited for, I’m looking forwards to more information on the CFMoto 675 triple. Disappointed by the new Triumph Daytona 660 but it looks like the CFMoto might be a solid mid-sized sport bike, at least on paper.
Sad to see CF Moto getting good press. Spurgeon mentioned that riders are looking for something more affordable. Perhaps the reason people can't afford other bikes is precisely because we've sent so many good manufacturing jobs to China? A process which will only be furthered by purchasing more CF Motos. You won't catch me on a Chinese bike.
Can you add a list of how much each hitch system weighs? It is a consideration for us with a half ton truck. Thanks. I have 27' cougar max weight 8500lbs. It came with a friction bar system. Porpoise was bad. Sway control was poor. Weight distribution was great. I have a sharp corner / steep hill transition to get in/out of my driveway. I had to unhook it each and every time. The hitch would grind the driveway everytime. I switched to Andersen it took a lot of fiddling to dial it in. It doesnt transfer the weight as well, but it does everything much better. It easy to connect, quiet, and tows great. We hardly notice the trailer is there
EV Motorcycles are practically a dead end with current technology, especially in North America. They only work for a few buyers with a few specific use cases. Small, cheaper E-bikes and e-scooters work better for urban/short commuting. The big manufacturers surely know this. Now the legislators need to get the message. Let them know. Mandating EV motorcycles will likely not provide any significant reduction in total global CO2 emmisions over total vehicle lifecycle. Glad to have you guys back.
Agreed, unless e-motorcycles make some extraordinary developments, it's really hard to justify one over a decked out e-bike for fractions of fractions of the cost.
You have to take into account lifetime co2 emissions produced by making EVs, which are presently greater than that of ICE vehicles. In the UK, some councils have started changing their mind on EVs and increased parking charges are now being applied to vehicles depending on "life time created emissions", also factoring in weight increases which in turn damages road surfaces at an increased weight and damages multi-floor car parks.
@@JW20236 Yup, that's exactly what I was saying by specifying "total vehicle lifecycle," To be fair, I haven't seen any definitive data that EV motos (and cars) would be worse--it's probably still debatable--but right now I'm not confident that there would be any significant net reduction in emmisions. As you mention, I'm really hoping that a credible estimate of the CO2 impact of additional road maintenance, more traffic/idle time, infrastructure build-out/improvement, additional tire wear/usage and production, etc. emerges so we can understand the net total result of these policies. I suspect, particularly in the case of motorcycles, it's folly. Incidentally, I have seen the stories about the proposed exponentially increased road use fees in the UK. It's insane but it's also a positive development. We're with you. FYI, I live in the New York City suburbs and the roads in the area were already getting worse and worse every year. Unfortunately, my state (NY) is getting more and more like California in terms of policy.
@@ApexRadius I wholeheartedly agree. It seems, strangely, that our governments where they are, all behave the same.... I'm keen not to get wrapped up in all the conspiracy stuff thrown about but I occasionally wonder if the direction we are having in is manageable, or if there is another agenda at play. The next few years of vehicle manufacture are going to be turbulent, for sure.
@@JW20236 It's hard to know what to believe. There's just too much noise in the signal. I don't think it's a conscious plot. To me, it's more likely a mix of good intentions, fear, elite paternalism/maternalism, group think, polarization, distraction, ambition, corruption, etc. As per the most dire climate predictions, if the powers that be were really serious about addressing the problem, they'd be much more aggressive about making more meaningful emissions reductions, like in energy production. But that would be really hard--and would mean expanding nuclear fission use--so, instead, they're addressing personal transport because it's the easiest couse and it gives the impression that they're doing something meaningful. So, it's really no surprise to me that our governments are roughly in the same place. I will say that it will probably be harder to push through mandates on this side of the pond. I think we should be pushing ahead with multiple technologies and not be forced to accept one that doesn't do all the jobs. Cheers.
Another question would be with BMW. Been longing for this. A lighter air cooled HP2 round headlight 21 inch front adventure bike. That's sub 500 lb. Which is kind of why I bought a v85 TT
I think Lance has missed something important about hybrids - they're not all about electric efficiency per se. They're about making things cleaner in urban driving/riding, in city centres where there's lots of people on the sidewalks breathing in all that exhaust from vehicles stopped in traffic. Yes, they use gas to make their electricity, but that's intended to be outside city centres most of the time, in the suburbs or rural areas where there's less people, less traffic, and more greenery to absorb the exhaust gases. That said, bikes are a minuscule part of exhaust gases in North American cities, so a hybrid bike really isn't going to be all that relevant anyway...which means (somewhat frighteningly) that Spurge probably is correct that it's more of a concept to get someone over the line and into the dealership to maybe not take the plunge, but to at least dip their toe in and test the waters. Without range anxiety, and without having to buy a second bike for longer trips.
About the ninja hybrid, I agree with Lance, how much extra charging do you really get from the regen braking? The engine is basically just a generator. Maybe if it was a plug in hybrid it would be much better.
I want a motocompacto, simply as a pit vehicle at racetracks. Im a photographer, my car is always packed full of gear, and the formfactor that the motocompacto fits in, is PERFECT for what i need. Are there cheaper alternatives out there? Yes, but they're bigger, and have a hard time fitting in my car.

Our wise rodent has decreed an early spring. Gotta hurry up on winter projects!@@jw6825
Talaria dragon 🔥🔥🔥
They’re back baby! 😎
I totally agree that you should do a podcast of what the USA gets versus what Europe gets. But how about bikes you get and we don't
Let 2024 begin, let’s go High Side Low Side!!
man, the entire sport bike discussion's only mention of an actual honest motorcycle for sporting purpose was one throwaway comment about a cbr600rr and another passing mention of an rs457, what has the world come to... i love the crossovers but im not sure we needed 20 mins on them! gsx8r anyone?? the zx6r got a revamp too, wheres that! anyone lucky enough to touch an rc8c? daytona660???? helloooooo??? anyone home??
Daytona 660 is definitely a sport bike what are you smoking?
yeah 👍 we back
Should we be expecting a new Deauville based on the new Transalp? But no DCT...
No if it’s not a full fairing, forward leaning bike, it’s not a sport bike! No the speed triple RS is not a sport bike! The non RR models are not sport bikes!
100%
Thanks for rockin' out with your talk out!
Aye, the boys are back in town
It’s a shame that there are so few beautiful bikes, hopefully we see some more attention paid to design in the future 💙
Cf moto 450 mt looks incredible
Just the right time!!!
So far, this podcast was the most funny episode.
Yes!! About time !
I missed this release!!!!! so excited for the new season. Let's do this!
Lance's take on the motocompacto was vicious but true to me as well. Love it
I am so excited for another season.
Missed you guys! Let's gooo!
Seems this was recored loooong ago since they don't mention the triumph 660 daytona or the suzuki 8r
Recorded mid-December, they addressed this very subject (therefore; some recent releases not included) early in the podcast. Did you even watch it?
1:50:10 Lance isn't cynical, he's just honest and logical.
Why is no one talking about Verge!? That’s a long-range electric superbike right there.
AND they’re in production. AND they’re selling now in the U.S.
any word on the 2024 Africa Twin coming to the US?
That's what I'd like to know. Personally, I think Honda is going to screw us over again like they did last year.
@@michaelskinner896 yah, seems like other markets already have them listed on Honda’s market specific sites. Even Canada who apparently got last years model! I don’t understand why they wouldn’t announce it officially so we can all stop wondering
Agreed.@@NabGer
Your “bikes we don’t get” episode should be a bit of a competition, with the number one (loser) ranking going to the manufacturer that keeps the most away.
A little of education for my dear and appreciate Revzilla friends/host: The first sport-touring motorcycle (up-right style) was not the Multistrada. It was the Yamaha TDM but never land in USA. Yamaha end the production of the TDM and re-design the model using the MT09 engine and chassis as a platform.
X-Max on Daily Rider!
I feel like something slow down the electric bike industry because companies can make very good bikes but they don't,in vehicle industry elon boom the car industry thats why companies keep going with electric vehicles.but there are some very good bikes like KTM freeride, energica esse esse, live wire
But unfortunately big company don't want to deliver good electric motorbikes.
Since you bring up the topic, have I mentioned that I've already put my money down for the F900GS?
Around 2010-2012 I worked with a guy who had the same bike as I did at the time, a first-gen V-Strom 650. In 2013-14 we both got new bikes. I bought a Tiger 800 and he bought an NT700V. One ride on his bike made me realize I made the right choice. However, you'd think with that being the Hawk GT engine, you could make it feel and sound more interesting.
I’m also interested in getting the 1300gs on the scale. There’s no way it’s only 40 pounds more than the f900gs like BMW claims.
missed u guys, specially lance 💗
On the topic of new bikes I’m excited for, I’m looking forwards to more information on the CFMoto 675 triple. Disappointed by the new Triumph Daytona 660 but it looks like the CFMoto might be a solid mid-sized sport bike, at least on paper.
Curious about the KTM 890 SMT coming to America this year, seems like great fun. Also interested in the updated Africa Twin.
I think the NT700 engine has origins in the VLX600 Shadow and early Honda Transalp bikes.
You still stuck in the 70s?
Machines do the work now, ever Heard of Tesla? Texas also gives them Billions of dollars to do it.
If I'm not wrong in new variation of bmw r ninet are they not using engine from 1250gs thing with camshaft? )
We hardly notice the trailer is there
Zack, if you are gonna go maxi-scoot, you should daily ride Kymco AK550i scooter with parallel twin engine, 15" wheel and 100+ mph capability.
I really struggle to call the Multistrada and the XR sport bikes. The same way, I don't call crossover cars sports cars.
About the ninja hybrid, I agree with Lance, how much extra charging do you really get from the regen braking? The engine is basically just a generator. Maybe if it was a plug in hybrid it would be much better.
1:34:00 this is where you are wrong:
the battery allows you to recoup some of the energy whereas a pure ICE cannot do that.
