Heater malfunction is far too common. If the high temperature doesn't kill your fish the lack of oxygen will. However, you can prevent the killing of your fish by using this simple device from a company called True Temp. In this video I will show you how I use this device in my tanks. It works, saved my fish, and it is easy to set up. Anything that can help to prevent the killing of your fish is a good addition to our fish keeping equipment.
After watching the video please share your experience with heaters and controllers in the comments below. Have you had a heater malfunction? What occurred? Has a controller ever helped you to avoid cooking your fish? We all learn from each other at this channel and your input is appreciated.

Agreed a must have for optimal temp control!
I set mine the opposite as well. Using your numbers Ben I set the controller at 78 and the heater at 80. This way the heater thermostat it not cycling on and off the solid state controller is. Remember if the controller has the heater in the off position there is no power going to the heater saving all those power on and offs at the heater thermostat.
Got three tanks all set at the same temp 24c. Checked the temps on the tanks and found that they were all way off what they should be. Needed to set the 25-watt heater on a 25 ltr tank to 30c for the water to be at 24c and the 560 ltr tank had two 300-watt heaters that needed to be set at 21c for the water temp of 24c!
Love your videos 👍
Hi Ben thanks for the feed back on those the pasture units👍😎
I learned something completely new today!! Very interesting thank you for sharing!! I'm going to have to check these out!!hope you're having a blessed day and the aquarium looks wonderful behind you 🙏🌿🐟🌿💚
Thank you Mary 😀👍🏻
Appreciate the advice Ben 👍🏽
Great product. Thanks Ben. Always a learning experience and at the same time fun.
Thank you😀
a great information thank you
Most of us in the UK use a brand called InkBird. Twin sensors and wirelessly controlled from your phone. Usually two sockets.
I have Inkbirds. A little confusing to set up at first but once dialed in the work great. Very inexpensive too 😀👍🏻
@@BenOchart The wirelessly controlled ones are far easier!
The wireless ones are easier but the instructions still can be confusing. I thought about rewriting the instructions and sending it to them ;)
@@jskoc I also had an issue with the continuous use alarm going off until I set my heaters 2C above the sensor temp. Usually at 3am...
I also run the twin probe/heater inkbird. But how I was told to set it up and correct me if I am doing it wrong.
Set you heaters a little above the desired temperature range . And they explained to me that in doing this you preserve your heater. Because the thermostat on the heater itself is very touchy and will continue to click on and off ( which is what destroys them the quickest) it will only turn them on and off a few times a day at most. So I have my heaters set at 80ish. My inkbird at 78.5-79.5 . I actually had a inkbird falling and had to replace it when the probes stopped reading . It basically said my tank was always 78. I had the continuous heating alarm set for 3 hrs . And the alarm told me there was an issue. But being my heaters were only set to 80 they still shut off as they should. Just my experience with them , would like input if what I'm doing isn't recommended
Now that’s Cool 👍😎
I've switched over to PTC heaters in my tank...they really are the new gold standard in aquarium heating...they use a ceramic core for heating and automatically turn off as soon as exposed to air. I have the Hygger 800 watt model in my main tank and it can handle the entire volume of water in my tank plus sump.
I'd still run it via a controller. 800 w can make those fish pretty toasty. Hope for best, plan for the worse 😉
@@BenOchart I agree... having an additional thermostat that can kill power is always a good idea. These PTC heaters really are great though. I have three of them (using only one actively now) and none ever gave me a single issue ever. I just feel safer not using a glass tube to heat the tank.
Great video Ben, will be investing in one of these 😊
If you go to Amazon I list both the True Temp and the Inkbirds. The True Temps are more heavy duty but cost twice as much. It's a one-time investment, so a little extra over time isn't bad. Check them out here: www.amazon.com/shop/benochart
@@BenOchart that's great, thank you Ben 😊
The people asking about Inkbird look at the ITC306a WiFi unit easy and can set at .3 of a degree. 2 x probes and will send you an alarm if the temp changes by a set value.
I have 4 tanks in my heated garage in Minnesota. I keep the garage at 70 degrees. No heaters needed other than for backup. Fish are fine. Of course I don’t have fish that need tropical temps. But if I did I would definitely get something like this.
I think a warm fish room and no heaters is the least risky.
I’ve been using those for years as a safety device to. They work great. I see yours is mounted right above tank lid. I did that once and moisture got in it and cause it to go bad. I even had glass tops on tank. I call manufacturer and they said not to have it that close to top of tank cause of moisture. I move it up about 15 inches. When the moisture got in it and it went bad it cooked my fish. Now that I moved and did not want it that high above my tank I mounted it in my stand.
Something to consider for sure
Off subject I’m getting into aquaponics very heavy love the plant growing using small totes from dollar store. So far everything zero clay balls are great for minerals. Using small 603 sun sun gotta love it👍😎
I run InkBird controllers on all my tanks with great success.
They are the best bargain out there for controllers. I found them a little confusing to program, but once dialed it they were fine. Can't beat the price. These True Temp units are 2x the cost of an inkbird.
Is it possible to put a 3 plug extension to the outlet and then plug multiple units in different tanks to the same controller and everything run fine as long as the one tank is tuned right they should all act the same right was thinking about trying it
@@TRAPSQUAD187 I wouldn't do that. It might shut off the heaters when one tank as hit the target but other tanks are till too cold.
@@BenOchart ah ohkay because I run a few heat mats for my reptiles that way and I monitor everything and it seems to work for them but I was sure if that could apply here I thought that may not work but always worth an ask Thankyou for the help Ben 👍🏻
Hey Ben appreciate the recommendation on the temp controller. Went over to the site to check price and availability. Could not locate this product under the products tab. Might check the site for propper availability.
I’ve listed it at my Amazon store: www.Amazon.com/shop/benochart
Hi Ben, love your videos. I feel like I learn alot with you, and helps me maintain my 55 gallon...with cichilds. Lol!! I just purchased a 30 gallon to use as a quartine tank. I just saw your video on Fritz zyme 7. I would like to know if you put the live bacteria daily or only one time? Thanks
Daily for several days. Be sure to first condition the water or the chlorine will kill the BB😀👍🏻
Thanks. Already took care of that. Thanks again Ben
Does that include any water changes afterwards, once i have established it, or just leave it alone now, so I can introduce fish?
@@lennymedeiros6118 Once established, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite and 10 - 30 nitrates, just go with your normal routine, like a once a week or every other week WC.
@@BenOchart Thank you!!
I use the same type of thing on my reptile cages
I truly believe in heater controllers and thank you for putting the word out. They literally save lives.
Nice gadget but I'll stick to using a $20 thermal cut out switch. Helps that I can wire it in myself though. It would probably cost most people about the price of this gadget to get somebody to wire it up for them.
A good choice for those handy with that sort of thing. For others, an electrification waiting to happen, LOL!
I been using eheim heaters for yrs never had any probs w them
The ones made in Germany are indestructible
This product ur showing does look good tho i like it👍🏼
You should actually set your temp on your heater higher than the controller to let the controller control the heater not the heater control the controller. Then if you have a problem in the tank you can just easily crank the heat up on the controller.
What you're saying makes sense but I've see controllers fail. Instead I'm using a sort 2-step thermostat. In the unlikely event of a heater failure, the controller catches it before it gets too high. (I do know someone, someone well known on YT, that had both the heater and the controller fail at the same time, lost some great fish...)
Got my 40 breeder yesterday for the jalo reefs should I do the dark Cichlid sand or the lighter one for them ?
Depends what you have going on in the room. Is the rest of the room light or dark?
@@BenOchart dark
If it has to cut the power to the heater, when the temps drop back down does it power the heater back up? (I'd hate to have the fish die from the water being too cold because I didn't notice that it shut off my heater.)
Good question. Yes, it kicks back on when it detects your water is below the set point
@@BenOchart Last question, is there a warning that it had to kick the heater off? If it kicks off and back on and you don't know about it that could be an issue too!
Thanks Ben...I’m in the market for some new heaters for my 125. Can you recommend a brand?
He lists it in the video
@@grantg44 time stamp where he recommends a good heater? I wasnt asking about a controller.
Eheim Jaeger heaters are built like battleships. 2 300w hearers plugged into a 2 prong controller would work. The Eheim Jaeger’s can be rather large. If you want compact consider Cobalt Neo-Therm. They had issues years ago but they were resolved. I list them at my Amazon store: Amazon.com/shop/benochart
A heavy duty 2 prong controller can be found at Jehmco.com
@@BenOchart thank you Ben!
When I was a kid points always stuck🤯
I had a heater go bad and luckily I caught it at 88 and no fish died!
Good catch. I had a tank outside in a garage and the summer temp hit 106F. By the time I got home the tank was in the 90’s. Amazingly none of them died. African cichlids are pretty rugged. I had to float a bottle of frozen water to lower the temp.
If you really want to calibrate the controller I would stick the probe in an ice bath, always 32 degrees, if the controller goes that low?
Anyone have a link for the inkbird controller?
I have them in my Amazon store here: Amazon.com/shop/benochart 😀👍🏻
I had my heater cooked my fish so now I keep native fish so I don’t use a heater
Aqueous pro not supposed to over heat I think?
Aqueon heaters have the built in overheat shut off on most of their models
None are supposed to ever overheat. Controllers are safeguards since equipment doesn’t do what it’s supposed to do 100% of the time.
Expensive 🤯
I see controllers ranging from $25 (inkbird) all the up to over $100. This one (the True Temp) looks pretty solid but comes in on the high end.
How much is one ben please let me no
I see them around $79 on Amazon. Check at my store: www.amazon.com/shop/benochart
I will I got expert magic wen u showed it im get this let me ask u question I live in ky do the make a heater and airpump that kicks on soon ur power goes out like USB if so let me no
Cobalt makes the best emergency air pump. It’s called Rescue Air, runs like 2 days off the power goes out
It would be perfect if you could rebrand your channel, "Things Of That Nature." I often wait for you to say those words. Thank you for your content.
I like that tag 😀👍🏻
Yes♥️
Wouldn't it make more sense to turn the heater higher than you want your tank so the calibrated sensor controls the heat and not the heater thermostat? That is it's purpose?
There are several ways to use it. Certainly your way would work but if your controller failed (it happens) you could end up over heated. I instead use a sort of double thermostat approach. The heater as the first stop and if that thermostat fails, the controller catches it and turns off the power before things get too hot.
