  • Addicted To Love - How To Sing Better With Limited Range - Voice Coach Ken Tamplin - Vocal Academy
    Often times in this day and age with all the singing shows etc., people place such a high emphasis on vocal range, as though this is the only way to determine if someone is a good singer.
    This could not be further from the truth.
    While it is awesome to have a great range as it increases our toolbox for what we can do creatively/musically, it is far from the only thing that makes us great.
    What I try to demonstrate in this video is that Robert Palmer had a very limited range.
    But it's what he did with that range that mattered.
    Not everyone is looking to have four octaves on their voice.
    But you have a story that no one else has.
    Let me say this again. You have a story that no one else has.
    Its time that you get out and tell your own story and not worry so much about whether you stack up to American Idol, The Voice, X Factor, and so on.
    Get out and kick some booty with your own voice and tell your story!

    WOW! I've listened repeatedly to Robert Palmer's version and several covers and have enjoyed them all. I'm not sure why I like this song so much, maybe because of the attitude Ken talked about at the end of the video. I think this version is the best! I'm in awe. Not only of your singing, but of your encouragement to those who feel they can't sing because of limited range - really encouraging! I feel it's a privilege to listen to you and your comments at the end of your covers. Inspiring and uplifting. Thank you!

    I destroyed my voice so many years ago when I was trying to sing songs I had no business trying to sing or (more often than not) trying to sound like someone else. I truly miss the days when I was singing, songwriting, fronting a band, etc. My voice is great for voice overs now which pays the bills - and I'm thankful to God for that - but that doesn't change the fact that I miss those days of performing and even dream at night about being back on the stage quite often. Had I known about your academy twenty years ago my life might have gone in a completely different direction. I was a fan back during your days in Shout - truly the best rock voice of all time in my opinion. So glad to see you are still killing it and helping others to do the same. God bless.

    Robert Palmer is one of the most underrated singers ever to come out of Britain! His voice was thick and buttery and he could sing anything. Check out him and james brown doing I feel good and then check out talk to your daughter. The power he possessed and could be called upon for a micro second, if needed for the song, was incredible. This song is a lot harder to sing than most realise too!

    You're so right!! Personally, I've thought 'Oh well I don't have the voice of other singers out there,' and that has deterred me from just doing it and finding my own voice. There will be people who connect with your own voice and what you express. Really great advice!!

    You are right Ken! I am 24 years old, and I started to sing when I was 14. Ten years ago all I wanted was to sing high, high, high! Not respecting my own limits. I used to like only of Melodic Metal, and wanted to sing like the Melodic Metal singers. Today I look for my past thought and see that I didn't understand nothing. Today I think that the most beautiful thing about the voice is the diversity, the different timbers. Imagine if everyone was tenor, or if everyone was baritone, or if there was only one musical style! That would be really boring! This is what I think. Really good video Ken. Didn't know this song, and liked it too much too! Sorry if I wrote something wrong, English is not my first language. Keep on Ken! Watching from Brazil.

    Hi Ken, lovely song, man. It inspired me to write this poem: What is love…REALLY?
    One of the finer questions in life,
    being near you in spirit,
    never letting go,
    always prepared for the fall,
    loosen grip to see you flourish,
    but above all,
    YOU GIVE ME STRENGTH TO OVERCOME ALL THE CHALLENGES LIFE HAS IN STORE FOR US!!!

    Ken , Robert Palmer could never even come close to singing like you on his best day , even if you had a cold . It is a good song to make the point you are making with it . We must be really close to the same age by the covers you do . I was in high school when Palmer came out with this song .

    Awesome! I actually have some questions that I've always wondered about you and I want to ask. 1.) How long have you been singing (even counting time done un-professionally, or before training). 2.) Have you been to the Grammys? I don't know why I wonder that but I guess it's just a thought of mine. And 3.) You had an awesome musical career with great accomplishments. So...what made you decide to somewhat end it and pursue teaching others and starting your own school? I think maybe one day you should make a video about YOURSELF because you are quite literally, one of the best online vocal coaches on RUclips and one of a very very few actually accomplished coaches. Thanks as always, Ken!

    • @kentamplin
      @kentamplin  7 лет назад

      I started trying to sing when I was 19. It's been a long road. I studied with over 20 very famous coaches in the Los Angeles area, as well as Italy and in other states, spending every cent I had to try to learn to sing. What I found was that all of these coaches contradicted one another, and I spent about 30 years sorting out all of the rubbish from the gold.
      I haven't received any grammys, but I've been to the Dove awards (Christian music "grammys") and been nominated/received awards there for my work.
      Your third question is the most interesting, and most people won't even believe the answer to that part, because they don't understand who I am or what I'm about.
      There was a point in my life where I was being offered auditions in several world-famous bands. I was known to a lot of high-level producers from my studio work, and word had gotten around the Los Angeles area about my vocal capabilities. These were paid auditions, and you had to sign a contract to accept their offer if you were selected for the job. You couldn't audition and then back out, without severe monetary penalties. You would recognize all of the bands. This happened at a time in my life when I had a young family. The offers I had required going on tour, on the road for 9 to 11 months out of the year, for five-year contracts. I would have had to be gone from my family through my kids' entire high school/teenage years. We needed the money, badly. The fame would have been insane. Instead of choosing that lifestyle, I chose my family. We travelled together and I coached my son's soccer teams in Argentina, Italy, and other countries. We spent that part of our lives together, as a family, instead of apart while I played rock star...
      Then one day, after the kids were grown and in college, I looked around and saw this video camera sitting in front of me. And something clicked. I had all of this lifetime of knowledge and experience, and I decided to put it together to teach others what I had learned.
      I don't regret my decisions at all. Life is full of choices.

    • @geargrinder69
      @geargrinder69 7 лет назад

      That. Is an incredible answer and life story. Thank you. So so so much Ken. I was honestly losing hope for myself because I'm 17 and I thought "it's too late to achieve what I want, I'm too old now" because it seems a lot of successful singers started at really young ages. I am, as others, truly blessed to have a teacher as you. I am sure your family is also happy with your decision. Again, thank you

    • @kentamplin
      @kentamplin  7 лет назад +1

      Kess Genre- You're just a youngster. A perfect age to start honing your talents. I think it's better to pursue the industry when you are an adult. You can, hopefully, make better choices for yourself. The road to success is littered with the carcasses of "child stars".

    Great video! Thanks Ken! :) A few years ago I kept singing a lot of Dokken songs which I love, but I started to realize that I think Don's voice is a bit too high, compared to my voice. So in the past 15 months I started singing in Phil Lynott's range & style, from Thin Lizzy. His range wasn't exactly high either, a bit like Robert Palmer. I noticed straight away that my tone started to sound a lot better and more natural sounding, and some of my music friends and family said it sounded a lot better as well. Another good thing as well is I still sound like me, when I sing in his style or range. I've also been listening to Ben Orr from The Cars and Jack Blades from Night Ranger, who also didn't have massive high registers, and my voice seems to suit their stuff as well, but I don't want to limit myself, I want to keep learning different styles and find what suits my tone.

    • @kentamplin
      @kentamplin  6 лет назад +1

      It's not at all how high you sing, but how you sing when you sing, whatever the notes are. Your style and technique come into play. Without those, high notes have little or no meaning. And low notes, sung well, can ROCK!

    funny, I heard this song recently and thought "that sounds doable for me" but then tried it, I think he is hitting A5 (or what ever note is the 5th fret on high e of a guitar) and even stays up there for a verse, not so limited in range after all. I can sing Wayword son with it's G4 but not this. Great performance by the way, even Ken looks like he had to push some air out to hit that A5. I singed up for the course, hoping to get those extra 2 notes eventually, and hopefully not tear up my voice so much doing so.

    This is a fantastic video. Got me dancing at 6am. Robert Palmer was underrated. I appreciate that you picked one of his songs to demonstrate that a person doesn't have to have a huge range to be a great singer.

    Too awesome! There's something I would love to see you singing and talking about one day, which is this Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole style that I think is called "crooner". I see many people singing in this style, but I don't see people talking about the style itself.

      Hey, it's well deserved Ken and thank you so much for your time to reply, and well, for you being you, of course!! I'm sure you get a ton of comments and inquires, so, I was really surprised that you had take the time to respond... How you have helped me, Ken: I was in Choir since grade school and a lead singer in a local band (years ago) here in the SF Bay Area, during my college days. I had such a great time back then! I'd even won some awards at the time, in some vocal competitions. As you well know, sometimes, life has a way of getting in the way. So, I had just stopped singing music over time... But, by watching and subscribing to your channel, it has really lit the fire and inspired me to again get back to singing and performing vocals when I play the piano, or guitar. And when I watch you nail a song, like you've done so often on your RUclips channel, it inspires me, and makes me want to start singing again!! I really like to learn new things, allot. So, I started a brand new RUclips channel for things that I love and I'm passionate about. So, right now it's mostly just me talking about my artwork, paintings and photography and my custom finished guitars people seem to really like, but, it's about art in general... So, If you like art, paintings and photography, or that sort of thing, you are welcome to look me up online (Google Search), or you can search for me on RUclips also. My name is: Dan Seitzinger. Anyway Ken, I do hope you have a wonderful day my friend, okay, take care!! And thank you again for your inspiration to start singing again!!! :-) Your fan, Danny

I would love your thoughts on how you address a song like poncho and lefty, Or a Joan Osborne one of us . Totally understand they are not big range songs . But to be honest I learn every time you share. Thanks again your our singing Yoda.👍🏻

    Hey Ken, nice video!
    Question here: how can you develop a better sense of rythm in your singing?
    I've been listening to some D'Angelo recently, and the flow of his singing is just so groovy. I'm actually starting noticing this "groove" singing in a lot of artists now.
    Is this just something that comes in with time? And is groove singing even a thing?

    • @kentamplin
      @kentamplin  7 лет назад +3

      Yes, groove is a thing. It's the rhythm of the accents of the syllables. You can have smooth grooves and choppy grooves, but because music is a series of cyclic patterns and lyrics tend to be a series of cyclic, poetic phrases, they work together to weave patterns that are pleasing to the brain, as well as to the ears. Add to that a nice visual delivery and you've got a nice package. Open Throat Singing can really put you into some nice grooves, as well. The nice thing about grooves is how they can make you feel good. Good Grooves can put you in a nice state of being.
