The economy of ancient Rome was a bustling one and in this documentary we look at the evolution and system of Roman coinage, their denominations and relative value, but most of all what was depicted on them. With an obverse and reverse side, a coin offered the possibility for two different images. These images were used to spread different types of messages to all citizens of the Roman empire, especially with the coming of the Principate. As an example we take a close look at a famous coin of emperor Vespasian, one the most celebrated generals in the Roman army and later emperor.

I'm here to say that you guys are putting out "original and high quality content" and your channel will sure get a lot of traction in no time! I love the presentation, the history research that's been done and above all that you go the extra mile when it comes to costumes and on the field characterization of Roman life. I love it, keep doing what you do! Onwards to one million subs!
Thank you Fede, comments like these always give us even more motivation to go on with what we are doing. Glad you are enjoying our content this much.
@@ImperiumRomanumYT You are definetly on my radar as somebody whom I would like to support in the future (patreon)
Bro, most people love history because of wars, battles and stuff, and unfortunately not so many people interesting in Ancient/Medieval economics, laws, culture etc... Btw speaking about culture, dont forget many Roman statues were colored. ))
@@ImperiumRomanumYT 8 videos and 26.6k subs yep you're getting a 100k in no time
this channel deserves WAY MORE subscribers than it has right now!
Thanks Andre, spread the word! ;)
Absolutely fascinating. Coinage is one of those common threads of history that fascinates me, but I've never before seen them discussed in terms of social and legal effect.
Thanks Tyler! While thinking about making a video about coins we wanted to highlight just that, glad you liked it :)
Fascinating, absolutely fascinating, I didn't realise that there was so much to Roman coinage, and it's so clearly and well explained.
Cheers Keith!
I am delighted by the number of ancient coins content popping up on youtube these last few years!
Your channel is the best one!
What a wonderful channel. It is easy to see the large amount of work that goes into each video
This is my favorite history channel by far, not only because it's highly informative but also for the visual representation, it makes the videos more entertaining as it depicts accurate scenarios and paraphernalia used at that time.
Rich people buy villas and cars, while if I would be rich, I'd be legit sponsoring such channels with thousands. The content is amazing!
You guys are the best pure Roman history channel out there on RUclips and your content is unique and unparalleled. Keep up the good work Comolitones
I have subscribed. Keep putting this type of stuff out and you'll hit 100k in no time
Yet another fascinating video. Very happy I found this channel. As a coin collector I find this doubly interesting. Keep up the good work
The more videos I watch, the more excited I get by the badassery of this channel.
This channel is amazing because clearly demonstrates that people never change, especially those who gain power.
Impressive documentary lads. Your effort pays off, because your videos draw my attention and also give me history lessons. Bravo.
As a Roman coin collector, thank you again for your video
great to hear, hope we could bring you some new insights on roman coins!
First time I'm ever seeing a video from this channel and I'm impressed. You folks have that classical documentary feel, like those good old days, but one which condenses so much information. I like what I see.
Good to hear Sami, thanks :)
I love your videos! They are the most polished and well produced history videos I've seen on RUclips.
Thanks a lot, and we're just getting started!
This is a really original subject and it was fascinating, thank you. Every success with your expansion you deserve it. 👏🏻
I really appreciate the work you guys are putting.
And we appreciate your support and letting us know, especially on these less 'spectacular' topics - which we think are just as interesting, but the view rates unfortunately tell us differently :( ...
As someone who loves coins and Roman history this is very enjoyable
Hear hear!
🔥
Most interesting history documentary channel on RUclips. I really enjoy your works.
Thank you Ryota, we appreciate your comment a lot:)
Commenting to get your engagement up and congratulate you on another awesome video
Thanks for your effort and sacrifices, I’m excited to see the next chapters of this channel
Nil volentibus arduum.
I found this video while learning about ancient coin by mistakes, The mistake i ever made , the amount of time and soul you put into this video , the presentation, the narrator voice , 7:55 and the drawing , 8:48 the props , you Earn a sub
Thanks! Glad to have you with us mate :D
Finally a suitable intelligent documentary made about ancient coins from the Romans great job hope to see more cultures and learn about their history of coins and money would be really cool if you made a video about ancient Greeks
This is my new favorite video! Yet again an absolute masterpiece!
I first came across this channel some months ago via Invicta. I've just now started watching it. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication. This is such a top-notch channel.
Thanks a lot Chris, glad to hear :D
I have to say i really like this channel and all the work you put in to it! 👍
Thanks a lot, we keep at it and see where we end up :)
You could also talk about how coins were used to spread a desired state or a pleading message for example a lot of third century coins have - the loyalty of the legions - on them at a time when the legions were notoriously unloyal. Would be interesting to see if you can talk about Third century coinage and then later the introduction of Christian symbols on coins.
Love your videos keep it up it's nice to see videos that actually pay attention to more then some cool battles and get down to what life was like...
love your stuff! followed the kickstarter! This channel is gunna be good!
Forget production quality and all the attention to detail you gentleman are putting into these documentaries, just the chronology and fact by fact delivery of this information in story form is so captivating. I love consuming Roman history and connecting all the dots, but your little documentaries are revealing many deep topics that I never even thought about before. Thank you very much for these gems! Salve!
Salve amicus! That's great to hear Jorge, sometimes we wonder if the deep research and perfectionistic script-writing is worth our time and effort, but to some it is clearly luckily :)
You guys are certainly my new favorite channel. I’ve joined your Patreon and although I can’t afford to go to the higher tiers I hope my support will alleviate some hardship for you.
Thanks a lot man, really means a lot to us that you're willing to support us! And don't worry about the tier, any help is much appreciated :D
Love this channel :)
same, absolutely love it
This is excellent work my friends. Thank u for your efforts
Another great and interesting video. I am now a Patroen member and looking forward to the Kickstarter.
Hey guys! Great video. I can't imagine how much work it takes to create this content. Thanks for reminding us that this youtube channel is the result of blood, sweat and tears. Hope the Kickstarter pays off! Just know that I will help you as much as I can!
Definitely looking forward to the future of this channel.
Video of most excellent quality great job boys keep it up for Roma!
I absolutely love this channel. I can't wait to see your growth! It's also fun to recognize Orientalis because I live nearby haha
There was a coin with a plant on it. A plant.
It was a natural and very effective contraceptive, and
added to any food it increased the tastiness a lot.
It was very difficult to grow, so found only in the wild and overharvested.
The last one when found was given as a gift to Nero, who ate it.
Extinct.
Except, a few years ago a small field was found in Turkey with plants that look exactly like the picture. They haven't tested for contraception, but did a little cooking and it made any meal much more delicious.
The location of the field is a secret, for obvious reasons. Every effort is going to be made to cultivate it. May become an extremely valuable crop!
Saw a vid on YT about it.
silphium
Hope it's true... would be nice, to have silphium back in the kitchen! 😃
Wow! I had no idea! Thanks for the video and the perfect production quality 🤗
You guys are heroes!
Absolutely stunning work!
I have had some Roman coins for some years, so now l would like to learn more about them and the years they were made. It's hard to remember everything but love your vids.
Thanks Janice, hope we were able to boost your enthusiasm for roman coins a bit more :D!
you guys deserve every sub. well done fellas.
Thank you for all your hard work. Great video.
Great video guys! We talked about late roman coins in class but never about their history and who the first people were to mint themselves on them etc. I'll be keeping this information in mind. It'll be useful for sure!
Good work guys
Phantastic channel!
This is awesome, team!! 👏 Unique focus on the propaganda & communication function of the currency - haven't seen that covered in detail before?
Huge props not just to the reenactment & presentation group but also to whomever is producing the onscreen illustrations and graphics, which are wonderfully clear and helpful? Partcularly appreciate the highlighting of each feature discussed on the coins, which otherwise aren't always clear to a non-numismatist's eye.
Hope Patreon, Kickstarter etc are allowing you to achieve your goals, and that YT recommendations may work better than usual (sigh) & allow you to keep growing your audience. You very much deserve it! Really love this presentation style, not at all bombastic as some material covering the Roman Empire can tend to be but both informative and enjoyable to watch. (And a great surprise ending there closing out the mini story-arc with the poor beggar! 😏)
Thanks a lot for all these great compliments Anna, I will share this with the other two guys to give them some better-late-than-never gratification for their hard work :P. And great to hear you noticed and enjoyed the little humoristic story-arc, we did particularly love making this part as well haha
This content is pretty good. Lowkey love history so I appreciate it fellas
thanks, hope we can lift that "pretty good" to something better - be sure to watch our more recent work ;P
I dont understand how your channel isnt growing faster... the algorythm seems to be pushing you down... I truly hope the best for you. The format is perfect if you ask me.
Fantastic work!!
This quality is amazing!
The quality is top notch. Keep this going. Super kanaal 👌👌
Well that is an easy patreon sign up if I ever seen one, love the approach and presentation of the content.
Thanks a lot Carde and welcome to our patreon community! We'll be posting some fun stuff there in the future :D
I hope one day you guys can make enough from this that it can become a day job for you guys 🙏
I've become a Patrician, glad i could help :)

Thanks a lot, much appreciated!
Very informative and enjoyable to watch, not to mention enviable outfits!
Cheers!
Love this channel!
Imperium Romanum: VERY VALUABLE video!
haha i see what you did there, thanks man, appreciated!
Absolutely loved every minute of the video
Great to hear! We loved this one too, such an unexplored world behind seemingly simple coins :)
I love it already!
its amazing how Romans would see COS and know what it means and most modern people would struggle with any abbreviation
To be honest, that Roman abbreviation system reminds me a LOT of the constantly-growing system of abbreviations used everywhere today in the world of texting and online comments!! 🤭 Most people using Twitter or Reddit today would have no trouble deciphering ROFLMAO - AITA? TTFN AFK RN for example...
To me this is very much a 3rd language at best, picked up just by osmosis & Googling 😆 So I don't know if it also exists in other languages outside of English? I am guessing it must though.
Wauw wat een content! Leuk kanaal! Ik heb me geaboneerd. Heel interessant!! 🙌 top
Great job guys. Keep it up!
Love you guys thanks for all the hard work it shows
Thanks mate!
Excellent and informative!
Great channel!!!
Thanks!
Keep it up alsjeblieft. I enjoy your channel and will watch more. Dankje
Bedankt, good to hear :). We're still working on new documentaries, but honostly we're doubtful about the future ... we need more success to be able to keep creating new content
Excellent content!
Great video
I love this channel!
Common guys your video is absolutely fantastic.
I never realized that Roman coins spread messages, very very interesting
This channel is great
Love the content you guys are creating and y’all don’t need to add subtitles your accent is very understandable.
Thanks! This is still part of an old batch of videos, the ones we're in the process of making now won't have any more subtitles, by popular demand haha
@@ImperiumRomanumYT look forward to the new content I found y’all’s channel on accident and I really like it. You guys do a very good job and it’s super professional as well.
these lil state messages in coinage still come more or less subtly in some modern day coins.
here in Chile the military junta back in the eighties minted a 10 pesos coin (a very common but small value coin) popularly called "little angels" (angelitos) which depicted a a winged woman breaking the chain of her shackled arms above her head. the coin said "republic of chile" and "liberty" but also it had in very very small roman numbers the date of the coup d'etat which overthrow the previous goverment.
Extremely interesting!
Great job. A real treat @
Thanks John!
Very good video. A small mistake : Caesar was not the first to make coinage at his image : there are, for example, several coinage of Sulla with his portrait on it, even one containing the picture of a famous scene with him capturing Jugurtha.
In Ottoman empire, when a new sultan took the throne. He donated his Janissaries (professional army ) a sum of money which is called "cülus". This is almost identical to donativum practice in Roman Empire and probably was descended from it.
Good quality content! 🙂
Love this Chanel
Wonderful video
I wonder if some of those Romans with means collected the various coin messages. It would seem likely in my opinion. I really liked the episode.
I'd bet on soldiers having the largest variety of coins, apart from maybe senators, but the latter had their own methods of gathering and spreading information, so they most likely didn't care.
keep up the great work guys! Love the content
GREAT video!!!!
Great work guys. I'll find that Kickstarter link, would love to back you.
Also already at 23k subscribers! What an achievement.
Thanks Chris!
Keep up the good work! Jullie maken tof spul, dus alle succes met het kanaal gewenst!
