Xavier Labelle, the young man playing the piano actually survived the accident. Sadly, there was a mistake made while trying to identify the victims, he was mistaken for Parker Tobin who sadly passed, but the mixup only became known once Xavier woke up in the hospital a couple of days after the accident.

Sheldon Kennedy mentioned in this video who visited the players in the hospital is a former NHL player who played for the Bronco's in the 80's who survived a bus crash back then, but he along with others were sexually abused by a coach named Graham Jones and has become an advocate for child sex abuse victims. One of his victims, Theo Fleury who had a long and fruitful career in the NHL especially given his size also came forward and Jones ended up spending 5 years in prison for what he did.

The Broncos tragedy touched the American hockey family too. There was not a porch without a stick at any players home across the country.
This started a tradition in our hockey family at our local rink. If a player is injured and hospitalized a stick remains on the porch until the player is well enough to ring the bell and hand the stick back to his or her linemates. When we have lost a player, and when we suffered the devastating and unexpected death of our Hockey Director, we leave the sticks on the porch until the end of the season. Some of us never bring them in again.
The young man who was paralyzed in the crash went on to play Para Hockey (also called Sledge or Sled Hockey). Para players play the game in specially built sleds. The Humboldt Crash, among other reasons led myself and several other parents and coaches to start a Sled Hockey program at our rink. Each sled costs a minimum of 500 dollars, up to over a thousand dollars. I am proud to say that no member of the Central Illinois Sled Hockey Association has payed a dime to participate in the program. What started with two kids has grown to four teams. Hockey is for everybody and for every body.

When I was a kid I played my first Atom season and final 3 Pee Wee seasons with the Selkirk Fishermen, the only other nearby team was across the river in East Selkirk but we used the same outdoor practice ice and indoor rink in the middle of town, every other team was miles away, Lockport about 15 miles South and a couple teams in the North End of Winnipeg, another 10 or so miles South of Lockport. I always sat in the front of the bus, shotgun, to be a lookout because I didn't and still don't trust anyone on the road in a Manitoba winter. I still hate travelling where I can't see where I'm going or what's coming toward me.

Mert if you ever find video of the crash site post accident you will be amazed that ANYONE survived. The driver of the semi is now in prison and serving his time without complaint. The intersection is a dangerous one and sadly both poor judgement and night driving caused the worst loss of life for hockey on Canada's soil. If you ever get a chance check out the tragedy of the professional KHL hockey team that was completely lost in a plane crash about 10-15 years ago, it too affected Canada as even people there were tied to the Prairie provinces.

I grew up 2 hours from Humboldt, and if you didn’t personally know someone’s on that bus, someone you knew did.
I remember picking-up my gf from work when the news came on the radio there had been a crash and few details other than “it’s not good”. When the number came out and the age of the players… it felt too surreal. Even the air in Saskatchewan just felt different for weeks afterwards. Everyone was mourning.

In what is perhaps a cruel twist of irony: the Swift Current bus crash in the 80’s that was mentioned was also carrying a team named the Broncos. The Swift Current Broncos have a shoulder patch on their jerseys that is a four leaf clover, each leaf containing the jersey number of one of the players that didn’t survive.

This tragedy hit very close to home for me. While I did not know anybody on the bus four of the boys had connections to my hometown. I went to the same school for 7-9 as three of the boys. The school put photos of the back of each of their jerseys as well as the Broncos logo and the phrase "We Remember" up as a tribute. If you are wondering they were Stephen Wack #7 Jaxon Joseph #13 and Logan Hunter #18. In addition to that Conner Lukan #12 also played minor hockey in my hometown. Every single year St, Albert hosts the Four Broncos Memorial Tournament in honour of the boys

Junior Hockey especially has this type of impact with children from different towns and provinces come together to live in a community like Humboldt living with families from the community in their home away from home much like the lady that had three boys living in her home that all perished in the accident, imagine her grief not only in her direct loss but with her sharing the grief with the three sets of parents of the boys she was hosting!
I too have sat in the seats of a Junior Hockey teams bus driving through Rural Alberta in the dusk and late nights in all kinds of weather so I can relate with what is passing through the minds of the survivors in fact I felt devastated during the time that passed after this crash, I have never had anything like this have such an effect on my days since. Sadly the same thing happened to a girls basketball team. The entire team died. Always sad to see this.

I drove past them when they were getting on the bus to go to the game. I was stunned when I learned they were in an accident shortly after.

I am from Humboldt, been here my whole life. I didn't personally know any of the victims but I do know some of the families. I don't need to say too much as lots have already been said, but even after all these years it still holds the community tight.

It’s a wonder there aren’t more such tragedies. Hockey, being a winter sport and these teams travelling in the late hours through terrible weather is more disaster waiting to happen. In this case, it was a driver error. I feel bad for that driver too. He was put on the road without proper training.

If you want you could watch the whole story on this tragic case which recently I’ve watched this documentary not knowing it was made but I was so glad I did since it reminded me our lives could be at risk every single day but the video is:Humboldt The New Season (1080p) FULL MOVIE - documentary. It is almost an hour but it really goes over everything

I have not seen the persective from people from other countries other than Canada and the US about this awful tragedy... thanks Mert for perhaps sharing some of our grief with many others. We put out our hockey sticks out on the front porch for our boys to use in the afterworld.

It was the total senslessness of the tragedy that really resonated I think plus most Canadians have ridden a bus to play hockey at some point.

I haven't seen this mentioned to you yet. But it was a semi truck 🚛 that hit them. The driver was drunk. Criminal charges were laid. He was found guilty. I don't know how much time he got.

Thank you for watching that. It was a huge unfortunate news story across the country.
Unfortunately, where i live, a similar incident happened. The Bathurst (new brunswick) basketball team in 2008, they were on their way home after playing my former high shcool team (i graduated six years prior, and we traveled back and forth often, so it could have easily been me in that situation)

Just some info about what happened less than 100km from where i live.
