Took on some side jobs over the weekend using the bare bones equipment required and ended up getting 3 jobs done with no issue!

Yeah it’s great for the work in this video! I’m going to be taking on bigger jobs that are going to require gouging, running a cv feeder and torching/plasma cutting so I will be upgrading. Fortunately used equipment is decently priced and it’s all a write off!

That's how I started out. Little Lincoln 140 and a generator. Great job.
Yeah I love that 140 with gassless wire. I have a full dedicated rig set up now. A video of my new rig will be coming out in the next month.

For little jobs like this I just run stick. Anything out of the wind with a lot of welding I usually run dual shield flux core off a wire feeder.

What kind of welder did you end up getting?
@@viking8781 I got a hobart champion elite 260. I only use it for side work and have roughly 30 hours on it so far and it's a fantastic machine if you don't care about having all the bells and whistles. Recommend getting it off of cyberweld they usually run great sales on welders.

@@hanford_adventures Hey man wanted to give you a little update on my Champion Elite. Since my last post I have passed the 100 hour mark on my machine and as it should it still runs beautifully. I have done the first oil change which was surprisingly easy. I also added a valve in the fuel line for when I plan on storing it for a long period of time (Highly Recommend). Overall I absolutely love this welder and it would work extremely well for what kind of work you have in mind. If you do end up getting this machine it is quite heavy and bulky and I know everyone's situation is different but I have been using a 2 ton engine hoist to load/unload the machine from my truck it's a bit of work but it a good start until you can get a better system for moving the machine around. Hope this helped you on your search!
@Dohu excellent to hear! Thank you! Yes I would do the valve in the fuel line as an upgrade, and I have a chain hoist mounted to the ceiling that can lift up 1200 lbs so I would just use that to load it and unload it when needed. Again, thank you! Would love go see this go for months and months

niceto take tarps along-prevent wind from blowing away shielding gas )and keep rain out too!
7018 and flux core are good for 35mph winds so no need for tarps. I was able to beat the rain but if I did want to weld in the rain or for the slim chance I had to use mig or Tig I would definitely have to tarp off the area.

I’ve got a 2001 GMC Sierra and just want to break out, and you’ve made that decision for me with your set up. I may go with something a little meatier as far as welder, but I think with air bags and a leaf helper I’ll be just fine
A 1500 is good for side jobs and light Welding work like sanitary stainless and handrails. If your looking to do equipment repairs and on site Welding full time then a 2500 is a minimum with all the tooling required.
Bags leak sooner or later but leaves and/or Timbrens do not.
Easy bolt on combo is Hellwig overload leaves, Timbrens using their spacer so they're always touching or near so, and you can even throw on coiloover shocks which are kind of a waste but I had a set laying around. They don't interfere with each other.
That combo lets me run a Tommy Gate (those are not light but they're insanely handy) on my longbed F150 and carried a Bridgeport milling machine in the bed! I have a Silverado but it's a shortbed so I didn't mod that. The same mods work on any typical half-ton truck or larger (like hanging wrecker beds on 3/4 tons modded with one ton+ dually rears and springs).
Smart play is hunt a second truck while you make money with the first. I will NEVER be one truck deep and wrenching everything yourself is easy on GMs of that era. Don't neglect Suburbans as they tow just fine and you can put a slideout in the back after removing the rear seats. Subs and Tahoes make great truck organ donors too.
You're doing a fine job, alot of us do just what you're doing and watching to learn a different mindset. Perhaps a business name, insurance some day... keep up the great work. We need young men and women to take on these tasks.

Quick question, do you like that stinger? I got sold by my Praxair sales guy for a deal but I’m having a hard time getting used to it.

100% definitely if I was putting out the material I'd be losing my shirt! All the steel was supplied by the customer. All three jobs were for my buddies dad's so it's more helping out than actually trying to make money. Don't worry If I was actually trying to make money I'd definitely have written invoices with every consumable and material I used added to the bill with 10% mark up also a higher labour rate and travel.

You'll never get rich going to work for someone else. Better to make money from multiple sources than just one. Being a union boilermaker is the perfect back up job I'm more interested in using it as a stepping stone than an end goal.

Hey it was great you put up the time it took to do each job but now i'm wondering how do you charge each job as it didn't appear to be an hourly rate? Thanks
These jobs were all for friends so I just did them by quote. I have my own legitimate business now and I do everything by the hour then charge for materials, consumables and travel separately.
Also when stick welding were you using mainly 7018?
Yeah all the welds were 7018 and all the cutting was 6010.
Great but rather use stick welding out side becaue of gas issues.i had trouble with gasless protection wire and my opinion but great job mate😊😊 keep on welding kickin ass for the working class... sorry about that i opened my mouth too early stick welding you did heck yaa
I use stick most of the time but if I have a lot of welding to do I buy Hobart fabshield 21b gasless flux core 045/33lb spools and run it off a ln-25 wire feeder. Gasless wire works perfectly if you buy high quality wire and run it on DCEN polarity.
What welder is that? Ive never seen one like that and i love oddball engine drives
Thermal arc scout 170. It's discontinued. Definitely not the best, I find the arc quality pretty bad. I bought it with 50ft of cable for $1100 cad.
Awesome video, I’m about to purchase my first welding machine, looking for like a used Miller bobcat or something. Been in welding school for about a year now. One question I have though is how do you get your customers? Like do you advertise yourself?
I just do side work for friends and family I don't have my own business. If your just coming out of welding school I would highly recommend NOT starting your own business right away. Go apply at all the welding unions boilermakers, UA/pipefitters and Ironworkers. Or go apply at construction and welding companies. Out of school you need to go work out in the field and learn all the rigging, fabricating and mechanical skills because school only teaches you so much. Work for other people for about 5 years, buy a cheap house and put money aside for starting a business. Then once you have a house and aren't paying rent take your savings for the business (at least $25k) and buy a truck, tools and welder. Now you will be educated by actually tradesmen and not just school and you will have the welding/fabrication skills you need for the business. You also will need to be interested just as much of the business side as the welding side. To run a successful welding business you need to have welding, rigging and fitting/fab skills or you'll never get to work on cool shit. If you come straight out of school and start your own business your gonna progress very slowly because you'll have no one to learn from so you'll only have the skills to do the jobs that nobody else wants to do. So little handrail repairs, peoples side projects and bodywork on cars. Trust me when your a independent rig welder you want to go after work that's for companies and business owners and they only hire skill. Otherwise you just end up working for regular people and they don't like to pay.
He's 100% correct here. You would have a hard time going from welding school to your own company. Everyone I've known that went to school said you are taught in comfortable positions with clean work pieces. Welding in odd positioning on dirty rusty metal is what the field is all about and it's better to learn that on someone else's dime, not your companies reputation

What is the open circuit voltage on the leads of that welder-generator?
No idea. All I know is that it's max setting is 170 Amps DC
What stinger u using. Looks like u were able to tighten dn onto rod.
A twist lock stinger.
Maybe talk to the trailer "keeper" client... weld some stirrups on the jacks to support them while loading. Lessen the chance of the trailer bed wanting to flip during the process?
The pin did the job so there was no need for anything else to support the bed.

I'm a full time pressure welder in the boilermakers union currently. Im not a registered business yet I just do side work for friends but I plan on switching to working for myself over the next few years. After getting a good accountant here's the way I plan to gain a client base.
1. Have a rig truck with my company logo and number on it
2. Pay a graphic designer to create a business card and flyer
3. Visit potential clients in person and hand out said flyers
4. Have a referral program for clients where they get a small % of the first job I do for a client that they referred me to.
5. Pay for some advertising in my area
6. Start bidding on government job and offer free quotes
7. Offer services that are rare such as mobile gouging and aluminum welding.
8. Live in a industrial area where there's tons of work. I live near the largest mining city in Canada.
9. Be qualified to go on real job sites and not just someones backyard. This means commercial vehicle registration and insurance along with business insurance.

One thing every buissness owner Ive known (not just welders) have told me is that you can be the best at whatever it is you do but if you cant sell that service than you'll never make it. One quote I read in a welding buisness book is "First your a salesmen and second your a welder".
Figure out what you wanna do and target businesses that need your service. Word of mouth is the best really. Advertising won’t get you enough jobs to be worth paying for it. At least that’s been my experience

If your just doing side jobs for people and not businesses I wouldn't bother getting any insurance. You'll need insurance if your working for other businesses.
What type Of generator do you have to run those machines?

At the time of this video I was just doing it on the side. I now own a structural certified welding company and work for my self full time.

Thanks man, Im a red seal journeyman boilermaker here in Canada so I have lots of Experience. I had cheap prices because it was work for my friends in my area. If I had my own real business I'd probably charge a $400 minimum per job.

What are you a Mexican? Charging $50 an hour for welds lol. I don't get out of bed for less than $120 an hour, $150 trip fee and $100 an hour drive time with .65c a mile outside 70 mile radius
Did you watch the video? I said these were side jobs for some friends of mine, hence me not changing a lot. Both jobs were less than 5 minutes from my driveway.
50 per hour mobile is way too low.

I'm not sure I don't have a actual business, I just do side jobs for friends currently. My full time job is a union boilermaker welder.
why would a person want 4 1/2" or smaller, SIMPLE! motorcycle frames, and auto-body restoration, I keep my partially worn out wheels to fit in the really tight areas, and if tighter than that, I go to inline grinders with stones or burrs
I once used a 1987 Toyota to do my side welding, then I went to a Ford ROUSH truck, then it broke down and cant afford to fix truck. but using a nice truck was a big mistake! I was getting people to bring stuff to me, but been striking out all year, yeah, not 1 welding job this year for pay.
I think you misheard the video lol. I say "why would anyone want a 5" grinder. A 6" fits anywhere a 5" does and when you can't fit a 5" just use a 4 1/2". Then I proceeded to talk about how I'm packing my 6 and 4 1/2 grinders. I trash talked 5" grinders not 4 1/2".
