    I have nothing but the greatest admiration for your efforts in creating that gown! For those of you who don't sew, you're seeing first hand the hours and hours of work involved. The starting price is totally justified for this original creation. I imagine some people who would try to get this gown for $300 must think that you have leprechauns and pixies sewing, cutting and pressing magically when you wave your wand! Well, think again cheapskates!! LOL!!

      @@MomthatSews I can just imagine the hassle you must get from blood relatives who want things made for nothing and also non-sewing friends! @@MomthatSews I can bet a million dollars that you have to deal with people playing you cheap when they want alterations done! That is the main reason why I won't have anything to do with that type of service! What they do is take it to a cleaner and find out what they charge and of course, when they hear the price they come running to you begging and plucking your last nerve, trying to get you to do it for nothing! But the real stone killer is when they try to tell you how easy everything is and how you can do it in a zip-zam, zoom minute!! They can't even thread a needle but they'll try to twist your arm about the matter! HELL NO!!! Not me!!

    I like how you share what you would change. I think I would have added the tulle layer to the satin and cotton and sewn it all as one except for in the skirt area. But that’s just I can see the tulle seam. If it were a complete lace overlay it really wouldn’t show much.

    You do good work. I made my first wedding gown back in the 90s for a fashion show and I was in a tailoring class. It was a lot of work cutting every thing out and serging the edges. Also, i had to cut out beaded and sequins lace alecon pieces from a yard of fabric to applique various areas of the sleeves, front skirt, long chain panel and puff upper selves. It turned out great people adored it. Now, I am working on bridal accessories because i have the space and sewing gowns I don't have space to do the work because of yards and yards of fabric

      @@MomthatSews Thanks for replying, sorry I've only just seen it! I have bought the pattern and am starting to get materials together to make the dress (my wedding is in October!) Please could I ask - would you do the satin and tulle layers as separate layers (they look like they are here), and if so, would you only attach them together at the zipper seams? It looks lovely and floaty at the bottom so am concerned that if I did the satin and tulle together at each seam I would lose that effect.

    Thanks for your helpful videos.I've been a seamstress for many years and it helps to see how others handle the construction of a wedding dress. I'm in process of looking for supplies for a wedding gown for my granddaughter who wants me to replicate a designer dress. Can you say more about the actual fabrics you choose or prefer and why, the notions you use in the construction and where to buy them? Maybe a list in the beginning of your videos of yardage requirements, for underlining, lining, and dress fabric, lace overlays yardage and notions needed. I know I need to follow the patterns instruction but I find most seamstresses have their favorites that seem to stand the test of time.
    I appreciate the heads up to Fabric Wholesale Direct, the boning and some of the other interfacing...did you say what brand you like to use? Can you suggest others for lace medallions and embellishments?

      @@MomthatSews yes the crinoline that goes underneath the dress ...how should I calculate the number of layers nd how long each layer should be in order to gather.

    • @MomthatSews
      @MomthatSews  5 лет назад +2

      For a mermaid style dress like this one I would measure my waist, hips, and the circumference around where I want the skirt to start to flare and use those measurements to create the top part of the petticoat, I would add a 1 cm seam allowance to it and cut that out from a compression type of fabric or something with good stretch. Then I would measure the distance from where it starts to flare to the floor and divide that by 3. I usually do 2-3 tiers for my petticoats and the amount of layers is determined by how full you want the skirt. The top tier will be the circumference around where I want the skirt to flare multiplied by 2. The second tier would be the first tier multiplied by 3. The last tier would be the second tier multiplied by 4. You would do the same thing for all the layers of the petticoat. If you want it to be really full, you can sew an inner lining into the petticoat and place a hoop into the hem of it so it hold its shape even better. For a ball gown kind of skirt, you will do the same thing, measure around your waist, but instead this measurement would be used to create a waistband. Then I would measure from my waist to the floor and divide that by 3 again and complete the same steps as we above. For the ball gown shape I would use the skirt pattern from the dress you are making and cut that out of lining fabric and use bias tape to create boning channels that line up wit the lengths of the tiers. I hope that makes sense. I actually am planning on making a petticoat for my little girls and I can do a video for that if you would like.
