  • It's hard to believe, but the marathon world record has improved by almost 1 whole hour since the early 1900s. Throughout the past century, many athletes have broken the 26.2 mile record and opened new doors to endurance success.
    In this video, we'll be taking a trip down memory lane as we discuss and analyze the world record evolution of the marathon distance. This video is exclusively focused on the men's marathon.

    If Jim Peters had completed that '54 marathon and achieved a sub 2:10 I wonder how much more revered he would have been in marathon running. It took over a decade for someone to get back to that pace. Huge respect

      For me, Jim Peters is the greatest of all time considering men's marathon. In '54 marathon he " reached the stadium in first place, 17 minutes ahead of the next runner and 10 minutes ahead of the record..." (record was 2:17, HIS RECORD). HE WAS RUNNING IN PLANE PLIMSOLLS.

I did it today and while i admit it was challenging, it was fun to see the progress marathoners have made over the past 100 or so years. I wasnt able to record it for you, but I'd like to mention i was barely able to split 1:10.52 for 2000's. Thankfully, i was able to push out everything left for a 1:06.99. Again, thanks for the great workout and keep up the good work!

      Wouldnt have been surprised if the reason was because the airline "lost" his shoes and no one would sell/give him a pair that could fit or they took his shoes before the race as sabotage. He didn't look happy to finish that race and looked stressed being lifted up. Back then people were real racists, and they wouldn't have been punished for it socially either.

    It's crazy to think the old world record in the early 1900s would barley qualify them for the Boston marathon and they'd be chocked up as a last place runner. The old timers will always tell us how much stronger they are than our generation, but the numbers don't lie.
    We have more young athletes participating in marathons, triathlons, Ironman, and ultra marathons than any other generation previously. And the world records the current generation is setting are insane

      @Reina De corazones He avoided testing, and looks like he tampered with another test. 99% chance it will count as a bust, adding to the dozens of Kenyan dug busts in just the last year. These are facts, ot slander. The sport is dirty as f--- at the top.Too bad, I loved watching Wilson run, a beautiful stride and very nice guy.

    • @terraflow__bryanburdo4547
      @terraflow__bryanburdo4547 4 года назад

      @Reina De corazones IOC has nothing to do with it. It is a matter for AIU and possible CAS later. These are FACTS, which you have a problem with. FACTS also got Kiprop, despite his attempts to worm his way out.
      Kenyans are desperate to make a living, unfortunately they are vulnerable to bad influences and easy access to drug enhancement. They have more drug busts last year than the Russians ever did, but they are not yet banned as a country. Meanwhile the Ethiopians quietly get away with it, as they have tight control over information and (lack of) testing. Our sport is a sham right now, a crisis that sees no end, as African women are running ridiculous times that would have won the men's Olympics as recently as the 1950s.

    • @terraflow__bryanburdo4547
      @terraflow__bryanburdo4547 4 года назад

      @Reina De corazones I mentioned Russia. It is a problem everywhere but I live in the U.S.where unlike Kenya and many other smaller countries I cannot just go downtown and get injected with EPO for some cash. Then have the tester warn me of the test coming tomorrow.

    • @terraflow__bryanburdo4547
      @terraflow__bryanburdo4547 4 года назад

      @Reina De corazones All countries know how to cover up doping, but like I said, dope is more available in 3rd World.
      USA has sprinters still getting busted often. But even then not 15-20/year. And they are not setting world records every week like Africans now on roads. Distance runners in the US almost never have been busted, but they are also far behind the mass of Africans, except Rupp who had a dirty coach.
      In the USA distance guys make more $$ getting a salaried career, in Africa the only $$ is on the roads. Combined with easy access and shady coaches and agents, it is a horrible situation.

      I've done 105 laps on a track before; 2:15's for the first 18-20 miles, some walking after that, finished in 4:40; I always said I wanted to try it again and shave 10 minutes; but since the WR is under 2; I feel like I should try for under 4 now...

    How about the history of the wheelchair marathon world record? It went from just under 2:59:00 in the late 1970s to 1:18:04 in 2017! I know it sounds unbelievable, but it's true; I've looked it up on the Boston Marathon's Web site... feel free to investigate further if interested.

    Except for nutrition and running, more athletes compete at this event, earlier, south africans didn't compete marathon. Their anatomy is much better for this distance.

    Been training for a marathon past year.
    Thinking about trying to hold 5:00/mile pace almost makes me want to give up.
    I’ve struggled to break 3 hours.

    That's a great work out, although well out of reach for me these days at 60. Ironic that you got nowhere near Kipchoge, even though you only gave him a 98/100.

    I tried Kipchoge's pace on treadmill and I could do it for... less than a minute ;-)
    But that is ok, we wouldn't stand with swimmers either or anybody else from elite - because they are ELITE not us

    Lol, this workout is actually quite easy as the last pace is fine for about 1.25km for me.
